The large, dramatic flower spikes of Eremurus robustus (giant desert candle, foxtail lily) reach up to 3m and are attractive to butterflies. The large starfish-like root tubers grow in fertile, sandy, well-drained loam in full sun, and the tall flowers need shelter from the wind.

In these containers plants of a double cultivar of Anemone coronaria (garden anemone) were producing a fine display. This tuberous perennial has dissected, leaves and produces large solitary flowers which can be pink, red, violet-blue or white. For a container display plant the knobbly corms into their pots in September (ideally having soaked the corms in water overnight) and they will appear in early February if growing in a frost-free glasshouse. Ideally they thrive in a high nutrient, free draining, loam-based compost.

Carpeting the soil under this Quercus robur (oak) tree are the long-lived tuberous perennial Cyclamen coum (eastern cyclamen) with Galanthus nivalis (snowdrop). The shocking pink flowered Cyclamen have gradually self-sown and naturalised, providing a winter and early spring display. The rounded leaves sometimes have silver markings on the upper surface which provide another display value for the winter garden.

The bright flowers of Dahlia 'Princess Royal' add interest to this border in autumn. Dahlias are easy to grow but do need winter protection in most parts of the UK. They tolerate a wide range of soil types but thrive in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun and are planted out when the danger of frost is over. These tuberous herbaceous perennials need to be staked to help with the heavy flower heads and soft shoots.

The radiant reflexed petals of Dahlia 'Hillcrest Kismet'. This medium decorative Dahlia has unusual salmon bronze coloured flowers and grows to about 1.2m, it will need staking. In the image on the right above this text there is also Dahlia 'So Dainty', which has a similar colour to Dahlia 'Hillcrest Kismet' but a different form being a semi-cactus flower.

The distinctive shape of the cactus flower group of dahlias. This coral pink one is Dahlia ‘Pontiac’. This cultivar has been specifically recommended to gardeners by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) so is probably a reliable plant to grow.

The Dahlia border is a traditional feature of the English country house. The one at Anglesey Abbey, Cambridge, is planted so that the different cultivars proved a spectrum of colour from white to deep purple. The interpretation helps people understand Dahlia groups, how to cultivate the plants and the names of the different cultivars linked to numbers in the bed. Dahlia 'Purple Pearl' is today's star being a Medium Decorative with distinctive blooms of deep maroon edged in white.
