Did you know there's a connection between being Transgender and having Type 1?
You read that right! According to the National Library of Medicine, research shows that there's a higher prevalence of T1D in transgender individuals.
"The prevalence of type 1 diabetes mellitus among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth is nearly five times higher than in the general pediatric population (9.9 per 1000 people vs. 1.93 per 1000 people). We hypothesize that minority stress experienced by TGD youth may lead to a higher prevalence of diabetes," quotes PubMed Central, on their article Greater Than Expected Prevalence of Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Found in an Urban Gender Program.
The reported results of this study states, "there were 1,114 patients seen in GeMS during the study period, of which 11 had T1DM." The study also claims 9 of the 11 patients were AFAB/transmasc, and 9 adolescents had already undergone GAHT (Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy).
Following, PMC notes the study unveiled a "significantly greater prevalence" of Transgender and Gender Diverse youth with T1DM—correlating it with the stress most gender diverse youth experiences, which triggers the onset of T1D.
"Stress increases the activity of the sympathetic nervous system and release of cortisol and other counter-regulatory hormones that decrease insulin sensitivity. Decreased insulin sensitivity leads to a higher demand for insulin release putting pressure on the pancreatic β cells, which may hasten autoimmune destruction and β cell failure."
Due to the external societal stress that is put upon most non-gender conforming/gender diverse youth, the body's hormones increases insulin resistance, therefore increasing the need for insulin, and therefore adding stressors to the pancreas that eventually causes long-term damage to its beta cells required for insulin production.
Would you have thought that psychological stress and trauma can inadvertently cause such impactful, lifelong autoimmune disorders? It's insane to think how much your mental well-being can transfer over to your physical health!
With that in mind, remember to care for yourselves! Your body will thank you <3

Edit: Hi everyone, let's keep comments respectful and not dictate the validity of people's identities. This post is regarding the relevance of T1D and being trans, and how they affect each other. This isn’t a post for transmeds. Thank you. (Edit: 02/12.)
"can you go to the bathroom or somethign it's weird i dont wanna see it" okay but like. i could die. so fuck you nuh uh
When I’m having a good day as a type 1 diabetic and then I remember that I’m gonna have to live with this condition forever
With type 1 diabetes, it’s always, “you can’t eat that ice cream, sweets are bad for your blood sugar” and never “you should take the day off work, stress is worse for your blood sugar than eating pure sugar” and I think we need to normalize that second part more.

I fucking hate being diabetic. Hate having to always be conscious of having to keep myself alive and going, make sure weight is managed, make sure ik how many carbs are in food, make sure to bolus right so bg won't get fucked up thought it will anyways, make sure bg isn't too high or too low. Fucking hate being up so damn early having to stick myself with shit and count out mls of insulin to refill shit to make sure i dont die in the middle of the night, cuz god forbid my body have just been able to function correctly.
Or worrying if my insurance is just one day gonna decide they don't wanna provide my insulin and then i need to worry if i can ration until we fight them to get it approved. Ntm if there were to be a power outage on a bad enough level where things wont come back, just oh well, time for a slow painful death ig.
And always having to be so conscious of keeping myself alive and constantly feeling like shit is so unbelievably exhausting ntm knowing i have to do this for the rest of my life without fail. My doctor says my numbers are great and im doing great but it's hard to care or feel happy abt it when all i feel abt it is contempt and resentment. not even just towards my condition but to myself for having to deal with it.
And it's fucking ok that I feel like that. It's ok to hate the hand you've been delt, to hate that deal with and live with shit that you never asked for for the rest of your life.
