I finally have a headcanon that gels both with how aggressively metaphorical Undertale is and how I want it to be it's own world and not (completely) just a video game in ours: Monsters came into being as a physical manifestation of storytelling and the collective unconscious during human prehistory. Humanity's love of stories spoke them into being, and they were a companion race to us before mistrust grew. Obtaining a human SOUL would essentially "solidify" one and turn them into an entity capable of manifesting their will on the universe rather than simply being the result of this process.

Now some headcanons!

Bones:

His nickname is Boney or Bones, but really he prefers to go by Papyrus. Or Capitain!

He is the capita in of his ship! Of course, Patch is his second in command.

He like to take turns on who mans the ship, Patch is captain at night and he is captain during the day.

Bones LOVES shiny things. They don’t have a real need for money since they often are not welcome on human lands, but he has a treasure stash of all the things he got from abandon ships, ship wrecks and abandon lands when they stop by land or islands.

Bones wants to make one island home for him and his brother, but it’s hard to find one that doesn’t have humans on it already.

He likes humans, but they are scared of Monsters. It makes him a little sad.

Bones has terrible social anxiety. It comes from him and his brothers trust issues, along with the fact that he never really had a true friend underground.

He is very self conscious but tries to use a little gusto to cover it up.

He doesn’t like fighting.

He is good at construction and crafting things out of very little.

He can cook anything you give him, and make it take okay. If it’s normal food he can make it taste great.

Bones’ gloves, hat, and boots are handmade gifts from his brother, Patch!

The feather in his hat is from a beautiful bird he saw on an island, he has no idea what the bird was but he loved the soft white feather he found once it left.

He is a very proper and educated skeleton!

He loves dressing up, his favorite piece of clothing is a silken wrap skirt handmade from one of the islands they stopped at. It’s beautiful colors and gold threads caught his eye and he had to have it! He only wears it on special occasions.

He loves jewelry, back to the shiny things. He loves jewels that reflect the light and shine, he loves metals that gleam in the light like stars.

He might be a bit of a kleptomaniac.

He loves to get things as momentos for every island and human land they visit.

Wrapped his scarf around his waist because it’s to hot to wear a scarf on the open sea! But when it gets cold he will wrap it around like a normal scarf.

Bones got their swords from a wrecked imperial ship, he got a lot of weapons from royal ships. Since they have the best quality, he likes to take all the good weapons and store them in case their favorite swords break or are lost in combat!

He is covered in small cracks and scars, but not as bad as Patch is.

Patch:

His name is Sans, he honestly thinks the nickname thing is ridiculous. Every whimsun is just a whimsun, like every Sans is a Sans.

Patch got his name from his eyepatch. He likes to think it’s short for Patchwork- because he is really good at fixing clothes.

He is good at leatherworking. He doesn’t like to waste any of their hunts, so he makes jerky from leftover meats and makes leather out of their kills.

He uses fish leather to waterproof their shoes and gloves, especially their sacks for adventures.

His motor skills are lacking sometimes when he is having a bad memory day, but you will never catch him lacking with a sword.

Patch is the most skilled swordsman you will ever see. He will fight dirty if he has no respect for his opponent though.

He doesn’t give a single shit about proper-ness or etiquette. They were banished from society and shunned by the Monsters they ruined themselves to help save- why would he care about what people think anymore?

He trust no one, but If Papyrus likes you, he will have some respect for you and treat you as such. His brother just doesn’t trust anyone now days… so if he chooses you to be one of they few he trusts? Patch will trust his judgment.

He is good at gathering things for papyrus to build or craft with, but he prefers hunting. He feels like he doesn’t do a lot to help out on the ship.

He refuses to clean the ship spotless, what is the point? It’s a boat? (Bones hates it, so he cleans it constantly.)

Patch loves the sun on is bones, so he won’t complain about life. But he will feel strong agitation when talking about other Monstrrs and what the humans did to him and his brother when they surfaced.

Patch is actually really sweet and considerate, he just has to trust you first. And that is really hard for him.

He hides his favorite hoodie in a box under his bed for when it gets cold, but his brother got him a wrap/shawl to wear instead. It’s a soft cotton and he can wear it as a waist wrap, a shawl, or a long head wrap if he wanted to. It’s special to him because it’s the first gift he got from his brother on the surface since their banishment.

Their bones shine in a pearlescent way now that they can be in the sun. Papyrus calls it ‘Tanning’ and Patch really can’t argue that sun bleaching is kind of the skeleton equivalent of tanning,

He loves music! And has small instruments from islands they have visited and abandon or wrecked ships.

Shea's Undertale Headcanon #5: Everything is Magic

monsters are made almost entirely of magic, with a little bit of physical matter to be molded. their souls are filled to the brim with magic that not only fills them, but also spreads to the world around them, rubbing off on everything like a tangible aura.

this is how some of the things in the underground that seem impossible are made possible. it doesn't naturally snow underground. trees don't naturally grow underground. i think that a lot of things that happen underneath the surface, like the snow and the trees in snowdin or the grass and the echo flowers in waterfall, come from prolonged exposure to magic. perhaps these things weren't there when monsters first set up camp in the underground, but rather, after months and eventually years of the monsters sticking around, their magic spreads through the air and seeps into the ground and eventually these signs of "nature" are shaped by the magic of the inhabitants of the land.

maybe them being underground means the magic has less space to move around in - it can't just keep going until it fizzles out into another form of energy, but it's blocked by the closed in area, so therefore it gets to fester and grow. i think this could make for some good storytelling...

Twist.

I could fully see Papyrus showing it for movie night—because, don’t get me wrong m, Papyrus loves it too, though for entirely different reasons. Razz ignores it. Edge would be amused, but I think his feelings are just complicated enough that it wouldn’t hit him the way it hits Twist.

Meanwhile, Twist falls in love with it and the message it preaches. And Papyrus is so thrilled. It could be a fun bonding moment for them.

Axe With Thunder and Food.

You hear a little knock on the door so you turn the pan, you were keeping warm, off and head over to answer it.

You open the door and there he stands, your boyfriend, Axe, axe-identally looming over you as usual, because of his height. A dopey grin across his face, an arm full of snacks and a small bouquet tucked away in his hand. He's dressed in a smart casual way, possibly caught by his brother before leaving, his classic beanie hiding his unfortunate injury, his single red eyelight soft and focused on what he surely perceives as your rather small frame.

"Hey Sansy, come on in." You chime, stepping aside to let him in.

"Thanks sweet pea." Axe replies as he ducks under the doorframe to step in. "I brought some snacks." He dumps said snacks on the coffee table. He always brings you a haul of snacks when he visits, and now he even remembers all your favourites, how sweet.

"And." He holds the mini bouquet out to you. "Tada." 

What a lovable dork.

"Thank you so much dear." You send him a sweet smile as you accept his gifts. That's when you notice the orange leaf stuck to his beanie.

"Oh let me just." You rest a hand on his shoulder and reach up, on your tiptoes snagging the little leaf. "There, I couldn't leaf that there now could I?" You show him what you found on his head with a giggle. 

Axe chuckles his cheekbones a soft midnight blue. He then plants a little kiss on your forehead, and pulls you in for a hug. 

"Thanks." He mumbles. "You know... you look really pretty."

Now it was your turn to blush. 

"Oh damn, something smells good." He purrs, sniffing at the air.

"That should be dinner, come on you big Teddy bear, let me show you to your table."  

You lead him out to the garden, it's a little duller now then when you set everything up out here, oh well, what's the worst that could happen? at least it's still fairly warm.

Axe takes a seat and sends you another one of his adorable smiles.

"I'll be right back." You wave the bouquet in hand as you head in. 

You quickly find something as a vase, filling it with water and setting the flowers in it, bringing them out.

"Perfect." You set them on the table, the little flash of colour bringing the whole set up together. "Ok I'll fetch dinner now." You turn around to head back in.

"Wait." Axe says.

You stop in your tracks. 

"I… I just wanted to say." Axe mumbles. "You look really nice today, sugar cookie." 

You blush yet again and press a kiss to his cheekbone. "You look nice too, sweetie." 

You then head back in and serve dinner as nicely as you can, you place a big plate of food in front of Axe and pour drinks before you sit down with your own food before you.

"Bon Appetit."  You chime.

The two of you dig in, casual chatting as you start your meal.

"Stars is this good sweetie pie."

"It's nothing really, but thank you." You sing in reply.

The scent of the food compliments that classic earthy, sweet smell of autumn, not to mention the soft perfume of the flowers. 

But the air feels slightly tight and almost thick, the leaves in the trees are still as stone, it's warm and despite being relaxed it feels somewhat tense. 

That's when a drop of water lands on your nose, followed by more droplets as the heavens begin to open. 

Axe stops. You both look at each other. The sprinkling of rain was sure to get heavier. You both grab all you can. You rush inside. 

Your hair damp, his hat darkened by rain but thank the stars your food didn't get spoiled. 

You look out the window as the rain gets heavier and heavier, hammering against the glass. The sky grows only darker by the second. 

A crash of light is followed by a roar of thunder. 

"Shoot."

Glad you got in quick. 

"There we go." Axe chimes, while you were distracted he set the table.

"Oh I'm sorry, I should have-"

"It's no problem, puddin'." He cuts you off.

"Thank you." You reply.

An idea then pops into your head. "I know just the thing to make this perfect." You light a candle setting it on the table too, it lights the slightly dark room aglow in a warm orange hue. 

"Perfect." Axe smiles. 

The storm almost feels like it's faded into the background as you both enjoy finishing your meal together. 

"Hey dear, want to watch a movie after this?" 

"Sure, I'd love that, sugar plum." 

You finish off this night snuggled on the couch, munching the snacks Axe brought, as you watch a movie together, unbothered by the storm outside, until the electricity cut out halfway through, that is.

A little bonus headcanon, although Axe isn't keen on having a nickname (compared to sans who kept his name) he loves throwing pet names around with his S/O, especially since he knows he can just call you whatever he finds nice (read tasty) and you'll reply, although your name is imprinted on his soul it puts his mind and failing memory at ease. It takes him a while and a dedicated partner to get this far and comfortable in a relationship though.

I like to headcanon Mettaton simultaneously being Alphys’ most enthusiastic cheerleader bff who loudly encourages her to take care of herself while also being her bad influence friend who neither knows nor cares what health is.

It’s not conscious on his part, it just depends on the situation, and is mostly caused by him being obsessed with corporeal monsters and understanding them BUT he still doesn’t fully grasp how corporeal monsters work.

So he’ll be like “Alphys you need to brush your teeth TWICE a day!! I know you did this morning because I pestered you but now it’s evening and you haven’t brushed them a second time yet!! Alphys you need to make your teeth so sparkly! I can’t wait to have teeth someday, they will be so pretty. I wish I could brush my teeth right now, there’s nothing to do ever, I’m so bored. ALPHYS!! Alphys, that isn’t the proper form to hold your toothbrush, are you even going to floss?!”

But also five minutes later he’ll be like, “what do you MEAN you need to drink water? Ugh, didnt you just do that like last week or something. It can’t be that important, I need you to come help me update my social medias first.”

Or he’ll be like “I did research so I am an Expert now, and I’ve learned that since you have muscles and alive joints and whatnot, you need to take a break from hunching over your mechanic wiring things to stretch regularly! So you dont get injured. And what kind of friend would I be if i allowed you to injure yourself under my care. So as your best friend, I will be letting you know to stretch every few hours while you work!” And she’s like “um sure, ok i guess.”

Except then Alphys is like “wait, shoot, i lost track of time, what time is it? should i take a break?” And mettaton’s like “no?! Why would you pause? you barely started working,” and alphys looks at the clock and its been thirty-six hours since she started, and try as she might to argue, Mettaton just REFUSES to accept that thats a long amount of time for normal monsters and he’s just convinced she’s pranking him for some reason by feeding him false facts
