deltarune is an incredibly complex game. it has some incredibly complex characters and story lines, and toriel and sans are no different.

look. i love soriel just as much as the next undertale multishipper. those two, in the context of undertale, are perfect for each other. same sense of humor, same amount (or very similar amount) of care for frisk, both in need of someone they can truly count on. so hell yeah, the silly skeleton and goat mom can be together.

the thing is. in deltarune. its not so simple.

in deltarune, sans isnt close with kris. sans probably doesnt even care about kris all that much. in chapter 1, he even says that kris had never really met him before. all this to say, the relationship kris has with sans is nothing like the relationship frisk has with sans. and, by proxy, the relationship we have with sans in deltarune is entirely different from our relationship with him in undertale.

as for toriel, its a lot more complicated. in undertale, she goes out of her way to save frisk multiple times, to protect frisk despite having just met them. she has that "i just met you but id literally die for you" kind of motherly vibes. but toriel in deltarune? shes been kris's mom for their entire life, as far as we know. shes had to put up with every little thing kris has ever done, all of their antics their whole life, while also dealing with a clingy ex husband, working a full time job as a teacher, and missing her older child, who is alive and well and at college. she loves kris, yes, but the way a tired single mother who rarely gets a break does rather than a lonely mother figure who rarely gets visitors. once again, our relationship with undertale toriel is vastly different from our relationship with deltarune toriel.

so heres what i think about the toriel and sans scene at the end of chapter four. to put it plainly and simply, it pisses me off. both toriel and sans are being irresponsible and selfish.

"oh but toriel deserves to take a break and have fun" yes, but theres a few things here. one, she didnt seem to care that kris came home so late. sure, that could be seen as toriel trusting kris to be safe and whatever, but dont you think shed be a little more wary, what with the whole dess situation from years before? two, shes drinking on a sunday night after a CHURCH choir rehearsal. which, again, not necessarily bad, but its how far she went with it, getting basically blackout drunk with a guy who wasnt even drinking. and three, sans. just. everything about the fact that hes there. he didnt need to be there. and he could have stopped toriel from going to far with the drinking but he didnt. he let her keep drinking until she could barely stand straight and laughed it off like it was fine. like kris wasnt going to come home at some point and see that. like kris didnt need to sleep that night. like kris didnt even exist.

the thing that pisses me off so much is that it shows, first of all, how little sans cares about kris, and second of all, how that mentality of his is rubbing off on toriel.

and yeah, sure, argue that thats "just how sans is" but please recognize that thats not a good thing. sans not caring and rubbing that off on toriel is not a good thing. because thats how kids get neglected. thats how kids get inadvertently hurt by their own parents, who are supposed to love and protect them.

and yeah, toriel doesnt know that kris and susie are "doing a deltarune", as i saw one person argue. but she does know something is going on. she knows kris is doing something thats incredibly draining and probably not super healthy, and shes not pushing because she respects them, but she does know. shes a mother. moms know these kinds of things. and for her to just. not care. at all. to drink and dance and play loud music late into the night, even after kris gets home, and to do so until susie, who ran away from it, has to come back and literally yell at toriel and sans to shut up. thats not okay.

thats bad parenting. toriel may not be a bad mom, and im not saying she is, but shes definitely doing some pretty bad things that are going to have lasting, awful effects on her relationship with her own kid.

thats what pisses me off about that scene. thats why im mad at toriel. thats why i hate deltarune sans but still love undertale sans. thats why i love the complexity of deltarune so much.

and also? people are entitled to their fucking opinions. if someone hates soriel in deltarune for whatever reason, as long as they arent calling other people stupid for liking it, theyre allowed to hate soriel in deltarune. do whatever you want forever. just dont come at people for differing opinions.

working on a request and cant help but post this early... sciencepeoples in high school. Random ideas + transcript under the cut

Alphys: Mr Sans!! Hey!! I'm Alphys, I just wanted to say that I think your work is great and I'd love to talk with you about your ideas on multiversal travel?? Blah blah blah

Sans: Uhhh-? (How does this random kid know who I am?????)

Ideas: okay like. I think that Alphys and Sans met either before high school as young kids or after high school and in college, but Imagine they met IN high school... heh.. im so original right/j

Sans is older than Alphys by a few years and Alphys had a kind of embarrassing phase where she was obsessed with him in freshman year. Not in a romantic way or in a stalker way, but more so obsessed with his WORK. In his past classes, when he was her age, he gave his notes to the teachers for future students to use as study guides, which Al uses religiously despite not needing them. Sans sometimes slipped up and accidentally gave some of his personal ramblings about science theories, which is why Al reads the notes at all. She finds them interesting and spends more time with him as a result, which kind of confuses Sans since nobody else has seemed to care about his science related theories. So they become closer friends as they grow up in high school together. Eventually Sans looses interest in the whole "becoming a scientist" thing after he's about done with college and leaves some of his notes and theories for Alphys to take over since she's still interested in that kind of stuff.

She finds her past obsession with his work very embarrassing now, especially since Sans is, well SANS. I mean the royal scientist being so infatuated by the works of a guy who makes fart jokes and can barely keep his eyes open? She shutters at the memories.

Okay obviously none of this would really happen and its probably out of character buttttt its fun to imagine imo <3
