Once believed to be disembodied heads, the Penanggalan is actually a tropical member of the Draculaidae family. With their frontal glands, large, bright in color, caruncles and their wild flowing plumes, it is easy to see how weary travels might confuse them as such. 

Both males and females posses the frontal glands located on their back to communicate across vast stretches of their jungle territory. The bright red caruncles of males are also used to communicate in the dense green. Scaring away rival males and attracting would be mates. 

Like most vampiric creatures the Penanggalan is highly solitary. Pairs only staying together for a short period of time to rear their single pup.

On the left, the Korred! 2-4 foot (0.6 - 1.4 m) earthen fey with magical hair! Very little sexual dimorphism btw, EVERYONE gets long beards and hair. They have innate magic like Otto's Irresistible Dance and Stone Shape (mold stone into whatever you want), and that rope is completely under its control. Self-tying rope, soft as the hair its made from but more durable than steel cable! They're mostly solitary, but are known to occasionally party with satyrs or hang out with creatures of elemental earth. If you get it in a social mood they're actually carefree and boisterous...just don't try to cut thier hair. These things are supernaturally strong when touching the ground, like "stronger than the average elephant" level.

On the right, Vargouille, these fiends are basically like zombie vampires. They bite you, transfer the curse, and your head pops off to turn into one of them! They can also stun you with a shriek! Hey, sometimes the head's all you want anyway. They're also the line. They're on the correct side of the sentient/sapient line, they are fluent in a language and can consent. Still, to my knowledge, they are the lowest intelligence of any creature still considered sentient.

This little scamp has a special ability named Vargouille's Kiss: the vargouille forces a kiss on an unwilling target. Once the victim is infected, they start fighting against a disease. If they fail the saving throws they die...

...and then tentacles sprout from their heads while the ears transform into wings that begin to flap violently until the head detaches from the body and flies away as a new vargouille. FIN.

In Dungeons & Dragons, a vargouille is a type of vampiric creature. It resembles a fanged human head with tentacles and wings, usually red but found in several different colours.

Vargouilles live on evil-aligned planes, and can attack in several ways, including a poisonous bite and a terrible, paralysing screech. They can turn people into other vargouilles with a putrid kiss.

The vargouille may have been inspired by the legend of the penanggalan.
