that person who described idolization as inherently dehumanizing really changed my life. because I see it everywhere now. I notice how often it happens and how terrible it feels to be burdened with the expectations of someone's idolatry. being idolized is such a cheap imitation of being seen and understood. it hurts every time someone i'm romantically interested in does the whole "you're too good for me" song and dance. because it makes me realize they don't see the wholeness of my personhood. to them i'm just some idealized image they've created in their head. i'm not allowed to be flawed, too. i'm not allowed to have earthly desires like being loved by a mortal. it is so exhausting being put on a pedestal. when people think of you highly the only way left to go is down. and it's so easy to fall from grace when you're held to impossible standards you had no input in setting. they demand so much and give so little because the idolized version of you that lives in their head doesn't have needs. the creator who helped me understand this likened it to being elevated to godhood and it's a really poignant metaphor. but I also think of it as being mommified. if I am caring and sweet and giving they categorize me as their caretaker and mother. the expectation to give endlessly without receiving much, the expectation to sacrifice everything (as the christian god would), the inability to truly be loved because of a refusal by people to acknowledge their flaws and feelings. these are all shared between godhood and motherhood. please make an effort to see the caregivers in your community as human. we deserve love and care too.
