Marcus when he decided to trust Silco to help him catch the thieves but then Silco kills off Grayson and has Marcus under his thumb for years which leaves Marcus with years of untold guilt.
Silco when he decided to trust Marcus's word that Vi was truly dead but then Vi comes back from jail and a whole series of issues happen that then leads to his death.
Blueface not sure who he’s signed to. Do young rappers need more guidance?
In late 2017, Hip-hop artist and industry veteran Joe Budden got into a pretty serious yelling match with rapper Lil Yachty after asking him if he knew what a “360 deal” was and weather or not he has signed up for one. Yachty seemed to not be very phased by his lack of knowledge while Joe attempted to shout into him the importance of being aware of who has access to the revenue that Yachty as an artist generates. Consumers and fans alike took to twitter to criticize Joe Budden for his aggressive tone. Some arguing his point ultimately was lost in his assertion.
Now almost 2 years later an even newer rapper “Blueface” appears on the Breakfast Club and reveals that he is actually not aware who he is even signed to outside of “Cash Money West”, a new sub label founded by Cash Money king pin Birdman and Wack 100 in 2018. The west coast rapper stated "All I know is Cash Money West and Wack 100. It could be... You gotta ask Wack about that." When asked about the state of his label situation.
To be clear “Cash Money West” is a joint venture between Birdman and Wack 100 under the umbrella of Cash Money, which is distributed by Republic which happens to be under UMG. That is four entities in total that seemingly profit in one way or another from the 22 year old rappers career. While Imprints under labels and rappers being signed to more than one deal are common practice within the industry, the issue lies in the fact that he was completely unaware of how many people have control over the ins and outs of his own career.
This raises the question was Joe Budden justified in his anger toward Lil Yachty and should younger artists seek advice from industry vets before signing their careers away. Being in the industry as long as Joe has, he is sure to have seen a lot of shady things and knows what he speaks of.
Rapper Jay Z took the advice route in his 2017 album “4:44” where he discussed financial literacy among-st other things with lines like “Y'all on the 'Gram holdin' money to your ear/There's a disconnect, we don't call that money over here.” This line seemed to rub rappers of all ages the wrong way, prompting a lot of jokingly defensive responses from Drake, Future, Tee Grizzly and so on. Another valuable lesson lost in the delivery? J.Cole criticized new wave rappers (specifically Lil Pump) on his track “1985” but given that criticism through music is the usual approach, Cole eventually decided that wasn't enough and sat down with the “Gucci Gang” rapper for a heart to heart in a 2018 interview with the two of them. Young rappers are criticized for their style of music, subject matter and lack of financial literacy often enough. Does the older generation have a responsibility to mentor the new? If so, It may be time for old heads to be in the same rooms as the freshman and have real conversations with them as opposed to taking shots at them in music and being surprised when they sign deals with the devil.
