Im rewatching iron man 2 and i just realized that if tony just gave rhodey the suit he wouldnt take it. Rhodey would rail against it, saying hes not a reckless ass and he doesnt need a supersuit, that theres already an iron man and he doesnt need to be competing w tony.

So, tony makes a big fuss in the suit, makes rhodey think hes doing some serious reckless endangerment (hot take, i dont think tony was really all that drunk at the party given how acrobatically he moved fighting rhodey and how precise he was in shooting at the same exact spot rhodey did) and forced rhodeys hand. Rhodeys a military man, yes, and he truly believes that as long as he can keep his eye on it, the air force would do the right thing with the iron man suit. He believes in the good of his men and the country he works for, so when iron man is no longer functioning as a force of good, its down to rhodey to get him back on track or make sure that the military/government had the power to take him down if need be.

Tony knows this, he knows what has to happen for rhodey to get in the suit, and he sets it up. The suits have redundancies for unauthorized usage, and theyre run by the reactor in his chest. He caught rhodeys attention in a bad way, left his suit unlocked with the extra arc reactor in it, and let the night run its course. He fought rhodey enough for it to seem real, for rhodey to get climatized to the suit and feel the power of it, then when it started to get out of hand he "collapsed," letting rhodey fly off without a fight.

When fury and natasha ask him about it later, he doesn't seem shocked or outraged at their insinuation that he let rhodey take the suit. He seems tired, mostly, but also a little caught out. He didnt expect anyone to look that far into it, so he doesnt have any convincing lies ready. They figured it out.

Idk where i was going w this except tony didnt LET rhodey take the suit, he very clearly GAVE it to him by playing to his friend's strong sense of duty and loyalty to the system. In the same way he planned to give pepper the company, he planned to give rhodey the suit. He just had to be a little more subtle about it.

(Also nat told him to do whatever he wanted with whoever he wanted to do it with and we all assumed it meant the partying and girls but REALLY it meant he wanted to be iron man with his bff so he made sure that happened, even if they were technically on different sides that first time)
