Day 1,494: Weekly Raffle Art!
....okay I guess this is a thing now...
Character Design Raffle 1: Week 1 Part 1
This is part of my tier 2($5+) patreon reward.
I had a thought for my paladin, amelriah. She always wanted to be a hero as a child - and I was thinking maybe a picture of her standing around as a child, but then a spectre or future vision of a "ghost" of her as an adult. Like, contemplative and inspiring
So for this, I knew the character already since I've work with this patron before. So We'll get right to the set up.
Amelriah's overall concept is female knight, that's my summary. I wanted to focus on the armor and set up of her as a child looking into the future.
For the sketch, what I took from it is like day dreaming. How we look out the window in a gaze and just imagine stuff.
This is what I've done with the child Amelriah here so the sketch have her look forward.
And playing on some presentation aspect I wanted the left to right direction for most western story progression and the idea of going foward.
Since this is a character in Blackmarsh(Blood of Lordaeron's setting) I went with a more plain medieval dress for the child.
After setting up the sketch we go into a rough design sketch to see how to put in details later on.
Here's the next part, the rough design elements. I refine the child on the left and I wanted to leave her pretty plain so I can lead to the more detailed adult Amelriah.
With Amelriah's armor the theme of being a "hero" is the defining word in the description. With that I went with some of the most iconic references pertaining to heroism and all that.
The hair flowing in the wind and the strong stance/power pose inspired by various Wonder Woman images. Then I take into account the base design of the armor. Heavy plate meant for solid defense and to protect.
Most characters are right handed so the "shield arm" for me is always the left arm, so with that I went a bulkier plating, while the sword arm receive a lighter treatment for swing and attacking.
I want to note my LOVE for a symmetrical armor and you'll see a lot more stuff along that line from me. This is why I added the waist tabard/cloth. It also act as a good ornament since she is a knight of The Crown.
Next we move on to detailing the drawing.And of course since she is a knight of Blackmarsh we go with a winged theme armor because House Albercht's sigil features a crimson falcon. Adding that to the heavier plated pieces to give that protector of the royal house theme going.
The side belt buckle keeps with the falcon theme as well.At this point everything is done in term of design and we move to color.
My coloring for character design are very flat, just to give enough detail to work with.
For the adult side I chose to blue ghost color for her entire body to play on the "vision" theme. Younger Amelriah of course has normal base color.
A basic background element was added as an accent to help ground the figures. I decided to keep a white background as a fade effect as she is entrance into this dream of what she can become.
And that brings this part to a close!
