alright time to talk about that “ryōshū got overshadowed in her own canto!” claim that made me leave like 2 different servers cause they missed the point
I’m gonna break down why I think gregor and sinclair’s arcs not only didn’t overshadow Ryōshū’s part of the story, but made the entire canto the most memorable one so far. And also how I think people downplay ryoshu’s part of the story in the process
First off, gregor and sinclair getting “more” screen time than ryoshu (supposedly). How did nobody expect this to happen?? They both have major loose ends that were never tied up. They also very much didn’t get more screen time than ryoshu, they got a couple of stages in a canto that has FIFTY ONE. The only one more than that is The Unchanging with 54
and it turns out, 54 is way too long for just the character, because canto IV drags SO MUCH
“But gregor and sinclair had their own cantos!” Greg’s canto was 11 stages long (including dungeon as 1 stage) and sinclair’s just been PM’s golden boy for a while now so its whatever. I think they’re overdue for some character development
And speaking of which, part of ryoshu’s story to me is told in how much the house of spiders destroys everyone who sets foot inside. Gregor was bullied to the point of breaking by Valencia, Callisto was such a formidable foe Sinclair had to activate his sign, Saude got her arm ripped off, Vergilius got angrier than I think we’ve ever seen him, Dante had their focus and reviving powers split across who knows how far
And you know who kept it together the most? Despite it all? RYŌSHŪ. Because. She’s. LIVED IT
And I feel like the idea of the house of spiders being a web that ruins everything it touches is lost in the narrative of “her canto sucked cause it wasn’t about her” as if every single part of it WASN’T about her and her life! And her struggles, and how she clawed her way out of hell by a spider’s thread
the only time she breaks is when she realizes that for a second, they won. Araya was ripped from her, she played right into their hands—and killed the girl she tried so hard to protect
By all means, she should have distorted. I think anyone else would have. The fact she didn’t is fucking impressive in itself but that’s a whole other thing someone’s probably done a better analysis on
It’s also nearing the end of the inferno, I imagine we have to start tying up loose ends here soon. I’m sure we’ll see more character development in cantos 10, 11 and 12 too for more than just meursault, outis and faust
I also wanna talk about her EGO Great Trichiliocosm because that’s for some reason an issue too. When it and yi sang’s version of it were teased I saw a lot of people upset because yi sang’s was somehow cooler. And it IS cool. He shatters a mirror over and over, whats not to like? But they completely discount the symbolism behind ryoshu’s and that makes me sad. She gracefully cuts through the web! SHE UNSHEATHES THE SWORD TO DO IT and yeah I like hers better than yi sang’s because its Awesome!
buck is finally going to realize he’s in love with eddie as a result of the lafd bachelor auction and then is going to pine after him for the rest of the season until he finally starts to move on in the last episode and THATS when eddie is going to realize and we’re going to be left with that cliffhanger for the summer hiatus
