Astrology 101: Understanding Terms

Astrology is probably the most confusing of all of the divinatory arts. All the terms, the nuances, and math involved in providing an accurate reading can be overwhelming.

Luckily, we have modern tools to help us with charting. 

You can, of course, learn how to chart yourself, but I find that, unless you’re super interested in staying very classic, it’s really unnecessary.

I use a simple app, called Time Nomad, which is free to download and will build your entire chart for you. 

Now, there is a lot that goes in to Astrology, and I am still learning. This is simply what I have learned so far!

Now, in Astrology there are a lot of terms and such that can get incredibly confusing, especially for beginners. So heres a small list of the most common terms:

Natal Chart: This chart marks the planetary positions at the precise moment of your birth, and provides the most accurate outlook on your personality and views. For the most accurate natal chart, you will need your birth day, place of birth, and time of birth as close to the minute as you can get.

Essential Dignity: This describes the perspective strength of a particular sign in relation to the astrological body you are looking at. Dignity means that the sign is positioned perfectly in it’s own domain. Detriment is the weakest position of all where the astrological body you are looking at is opposite its own domain.

Conjunction: 0°- A perfect unity between two planets. 

Opposition: 180°- Planets are in opposite houses, creating a polarity. Opposition is usually a “hard” confrontation between self and outside forces.

Square: 90°- square is usually a direct conflict between two houses. The energies involved create an every dueling effect. Planets that are square to eachother will create a weakness.

Trine: 120°- Trine comes in to play with the rule of three, and creates a harmony of the bodies in question. Planets that are trine to eachother will play to your strengths.

Sextile: 60°- The bodies involved cooperate smoothly, creating inspiration. Planets that are sextile to eachother will play to your strengths, and may have a great deal to do with your passions.

Now, lets take a look at some of the planetary bodies involved in a chart:

Of course, we know that the 9 planets are involved, plus the sun, so lets start there:

Sun- When most people say “I’m a Sagittarius!” or “I’m a Virgo!” they are usually referring to their Sun sign. The sun sign is determined by your birthday, and charts the suns position in the sky and the house it’s in on the day of your birth. The sun will be the most prevalent aspect of ones personality, and is a good overview. 

Moon- The moon sign is the sign that is probably the second most prevalent. The moon sign will determine your emotional self. These are your inner way of thinking, and it also usually plays a big role in your intelligence as well.

Black Moon- The dark moon, black moon, or “Lilith” sign is a sign that determines our shadow self. It describes the depths of our subconscious and usually exploits our weaknesses. The Black Moon sign is the darker side of our person.

Mercury- Mercury describes our communication skillset. How do you communicate with loved ones? Strangers? It also describes how we react to change, how we adapt, and what keeps us young and our hearts on fire. 

Venus- Describes our love life. The yin side of our libido. The “softer” lover side of our relationships. Also describes our artistic and creative endeavors and what drives our physical aesthetic. Our “style” as it were. 

Mars- Mars is, essentially, our fight or flight trigger. It describes how we are likely to react when dealing with conflict. What is our power? Will also describe the “yang” side of our libido. The power side. The dominant side. 

Jupiter- Associated with law, Jupiter describes what drives our moral code. How are we likely to react in situations regarding the law? Also describes our motivations, and may be a big factor in our career choices.

Saturn- As the last planet seen by the naked eye, Saturn is a powerful determiner of our limitations, and financial choices. Can also describe how we organize our thoughts and day-to-day lives. 

Uranus- Uranus is associated with our ever changing lives, and describes our innovative capacity, and how we progress. Uranus describes our need to be different, and how we express that need. 

Neptune- Associated with the ocean, this planetary sign will describe your imagination, your dreams, aspirations, and psychic abilities.  

Pluto- Pluto is Lord of the Underworld. Pluto is another sign that describes our shadow self. As an essential cycle of life, death is important. How do we destroy? How do we deal with death and loss?

Part of Fortune- What brings you luck and fortune?

South Node- Describes our past situations that shape today. Or karma.

North Node- Describes the future and destiny that we are moving to.

Ascendant- Signifies the beginnings of a person and helps to answer the question “who am I?”

Descendant- Personal relationship and dealings with others- friends and foes, lovers, business partners, etc.

Imum Coeli- Forces that shaped our lives in the early stages.

Midheaven- The most significant sign for your career and goals and aspirations in life. What do you want to accomplish in the world?

Vertex- How do you relate to others? A particularly important point to look at when looking at synastry. This is the point to look at when looking for relationship compatibility (as well as Venus and Mars).

This begins my new adventure in the world of Astrology! Many astrologers study for YEARS to become masters, so don’t feel discouraged if you don’t quite get it yet. It may be helpful to actually go see a reputable Astrologer and have them read your Natal Chart.
