Everyone slowly drags themselves back to the Polar Tang. Finding spots in the common areas of the submarine until Law gets his med checks done.
It was a nasty fight and Law doesn’t let one of those pass without doing very thorough checks of every member of his crew to ensure everyone is healthy.
He does you first. He always does you first. You follow him into the medbay after boarding the ship and head to lay on the table while he digs through his med supplies. While he’s not looking, you scrunch your face, trying to will the pain to go away. It hurts to breath but you do your best to control your air flow.
The mask is up when Law turns around and starts checking your extremities. “Does anything hurt?” You shake your head. His hand finds your chest to make sure your heart is beating correctly and your breathing is normal; he decides you’re good to go. “Send in Shachi. I’ll join you in a bit.” His hand finds your cheek for a brief moment as he places a soft kiss to your forehead. He turns back, preparing for the rest of the crew.
You take the opportunity to quickly get off the table, holding back the pain from inhaling. You zip up your boiler suit and slide your hands in your pockets, one hand able to move up to hold your side without being noticed.
Law turns back and his hands find your face again. He places a soft kiss on your lips before you head out.

Law heads out of the medbay a few hours later. All 20 crew members are fixed up from the battle. He only had to reset a couple bones, stitch up two sword wounds, and provide medicine for one concussion. All in all, a relatively healthy crew is leaving the island.
As he approaches the door to your shared cabin, he hears you groan out in what sounds very much like pain. He slowly opens the door, peeking his head in first, and spots you laying in bed, boiler suit off, shirt off, extremely swollen and bruised torso on full display. He knows immediately what the pain is from. Bruised or broken ribs. Damnit.
He steps all the way into the room and says your name. You don’t respond but wince and groan as the pain continues.
Law moves to sit next to you on the bed, hand reaching for yours. The weight of his hand in your palm shakes you from the agony in your mind. As your eyes meet, he speaks. “(Y/n). Why did you hide this from me?”
Guilt starts to mix with the agony on your face. “It’s not as bad as it looks.” A deep sigh leaves Law as his eyes move down your body. His hand finds one of the bruises and he pushes down softly. You gasp and a deep groan leaves your lips. “Law- what are you doing?” He pushes down in a few more spots, listening for how you react to the pain before he stops and his eyes find yours again.
“You broke three ribs. It is as bad as it looks. Stay put.” He pushes your shoulder gently, laying you back on the pillow before he gets up and leaves the room to get supplies from the medbay.
-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-
Law gathers up his medical supplies and stands to leave again. “Get some sleep. I’ll be back in a bit.”
A groan leaves your lips as you reach for his hand, grabbing it before he can get too far away. “Law, please stay. I don’t want to sleep alone. Please come to bed.”
“No. I have work to do.” Having already wasted time doing something he should’ve done right when you all got back from the battle, Law is too annoyed with you to cave to your pleas. “I’ll be back when I’m done.”
He ignores the pout on your lips as he leaves the room.
As you’re trying to fall asleep a few minutes later, you hear the door reopen and Law set stuff on the desk. The lamp light clicks on just before you hear his body plop down into the chair. Despite the annoyance, he would never leave you completely alone if you asked him to stay. You smile to yourself as Law leans back and opens a book.
fingers in wound/ “wait, what are you- don’t-!” / Arterial bleeding
part 2 of whumpay - loss of senses
Cw: blood and a bit of gore
Hero grunted as they tripped against a root, or rock, or whatever. Not like they could see. Supervillain ignored their struggles and hurried along, their grip on the hero’s hand tight. Hero had given up on keeping their eyes open; all they could see when they did was a blurry scenery filled with black spots. They burned even when Hero kept them closed. They burned so much Hero couldn’t stop the tears from flowing. God, they must look so pathetic.
“Ow!”
“Branch.” Supervillain ‘warned’. Then they had the audacity to chuckle.
“I will make you eat my shit.”
The villain only hummed. “Looking forward to it, sweetheart.”
Hero clenched their ungripped hand into a fist. “What’s your deal, anyway? Why are you here?”
“Currently? Trying to find your leader so I can see the look on his face when he sees your cute little ass-”
“I meant here, in the forest.” Fucking creep. “How did your lot find us.”
“Ah, that. That’s a secret.”
Hero huffed in annoyance. However, they did notice how Supervillain was unguarded, for some reason. Did they not see Hero as a threat? They hadn’t even taken their weapon from them.
Hero slowly reached their sword with their free hand. Nothing. Supervillain continued on, unaware. The hero bit their lip. Here goes nothing.
They pulled the sword and swung blindly. Supervillain gasped in pain as the hero felt their weapon connect with something. Either the villain’s legs or back.
“You… oh, you...” Hero shivered. They did not like that tone. “Heh. I see why Leader is fond of you.”
Hero kept their sword’s tip pointing forward. “Stand back.”
“But why would I stand back when things have gotten so,” a change in the breeze, “interesting.” Supervillain’s voice was right behind them. Hero turned and swung sideways, letting out a big oof as something hit them hard in the stomach. Still, they kept their grip on their sword tight and swung again. The villain hissed.
“Not going down easy, are you?” Hero kept their guard up, muscles tense. “Good.” The villain purred. “That’s very good, Hero.” A whoosh and the hero flinched when a hand landed gently on the fingers the hero had around their sword’s hilt. “You just gave me an excuse to do this.”
Cold fingers wrapped around the hero’s, and the hero heard their bones crack with how much Supervillain was gripping them. Something slammed against their pelvis, which took the hero’s breath away. Another slam and a quick twist of their hand was enough for Hero to drop their sword. Pathetic.
Supervillain shoved them backwards, making Hero fall on their butt. The hero gasped and tried to locate the villain by hearing, but the only thing they could hear was the blood rushing in their system. They opened their eyes into a squint just enough to notice the very blurry shape of Supervillain coming their way, something glinting in their hand.
The fucker has my sword.
“You have no right to-”
The sword touched their neck. “Oh, Hero.” Supervillain drawled. “I am so going to enjoy putting Leader in his place.”
Hero arched their back in agony as their body exploded with hot pain.
This wasn’t good. Leader’s bow was dropped somewhere during the fight, so now he only had his fists. Sidekick had taken a nasty fireball right on the stomach and was out of commission. They laid on the ground on Leader’s right. Medic hovered over him as she gently tried to reduce their pain. Rogue was covering them, doing a good job so far, but even Leader noticed that he was reaching his limit. At some point, Sniper was fished out of her hiding place and forced to partake in the fight, which was no help at all. They were not good at hand to hand combat. To be fair, she had managed to get rid of Henchman right before she got caught, so they weren’t entirely useless. She did her best attempt covering Leader’s left.
Villain cackled when Leader was nearly grazed by their poisonous hands. “Focus, focus!”
Leader’s punch landed right on Villain’s nose. It cracked satisfyingly. He wasted no time and threw a roundhouse kick, hitting the villain square in the chest. They fell on the ground with a wheezed groan.
Leader sat on top of them and grabbed them by their shirt. “How did you find us? Why are you here?”
Villain gave him a bloody smile. “Boss’s orders, man. No hard feelings.”
“Supervillain.” Leader spat. If his nemesis knew where they were, then they were in much deeper shit than he thought. “Where are they?”
“Dunno.” The villain was infuriatingly calm. “Just gave us orders to keep your lot busy.” What? That didn’t make much sense. “Oh, and injure Hero bad enough so you could hide them somewhere away from the fight. I’m surprised it actually worked.”
Leader growled. “You!”
“Hey, hey. Hey! No hard feelings, just the j-”
Villain let out a loud yelp as Leader punched them square in the face. They raised their arm, fingers already producing the poisonous dust, but Leader wasn’t having it. He quickly fished out a knife he kept on his waist for emergencies and stabbed the villain’s hand to the ground.
“Fuck!” Leader twisted the knife and Villain writhed in pain. “I’ll fucking kill you!” They raised the other hand, but the hero quickly caught that too. He pressed it on the ground next to the villain’s head. Good thing that dust of theirs didn’t have a long range.
“You have ten seconds to tell me what Supervillain’s plan is.”
Villain squirmed under him. “What do you think?” Leader twisted the knife again and Villain bit their lip.
“Leader.” Sniper voice was tense as she tried to get his attention.
“Tell me.” Leader growled at Villain, ignoring her.
“Leader.”
“I think you really should turn around, man.” Villain had a look of relief in their eyes that Leader didn’t like.
“Leader!”
“Where are they.”
“LEADER!”
“WHAT!” Leader finally turned to look at Sniper, who had a furious but concerned look.
“They’re here.” Was all she said and Leader looked towards the direction she was looking at and he gasped in horror and surprise.
Standing on his left, surrounded by their men, was Supervillain. And in their arms was a sobbing, wounded Hero. They were struggling in Supervillain’s grip, tears and a thin streak of blood coming out of their now open eyes. A huge gash tore their clothes and skin from the neck to the stomach. Blood spelt from Hero’s lips too with how much they were biting it.
Leader clenched his jaw in fury. This was too far. Even for his long-sworn nemesis.
“Get your hands off my team.” Leader growled.
“Get your hands off mine.” Supervillain glared.
Leader still had his fingers around the handle of his knife. Villain bit back a whimper as he shoved it deeper into their hand. “Too far, Supervillain. You know you’ve went too far.”
Supervillain stared for a minute, assessing the situation. Leader’s team shuffled slowly behind him and Supervillain’s men went behind Supervillain. They knew better than to get between them. Supervillain stared at the villain under Leader and Leader looked in concern at Hero in Supervillains hold.
“Oh, this isn’t going too far.” Supervillain finally came to a decision, it seemed. Leader’s brows furrowed. “This is.”
They dropped the sword – Hero’s sword, the bastard! – and raised their fingers to Hero’s wound. Leader looked, confused. Then he flinched when Hero squeezed their eyes shut and keened.
“Wait, what are you-” Leader whispered in disbelief. Supervillain never went against their team, it was always just them and him. That changed today. “Don’t-!”
Hero screamed when Supervillain’s fingers went inside their body. “Don't! Stop!” They pleaded. “Stop!”
But Supervillain didn’t stop. They shoved those cold fingers further in and Hero trembled violently, all while the villain looked at Leader dead in the eye.
“Supervillain, you BASTARD!” Leader screamed, but he didn’t dare approach. Villain twitched under him and he realized he had nudged his knife in his fury.
“You have something of mine, I believe.” Supervillain said calmly, staying still. Hero sobbed.
Leader glared at his nemesis, not taking his eyes off them or Hero as he pulled the knife out of Villain’s hand. The villain under them hissed. Supervillain also took their fingers out of Hero.
“Good, Leader. Very good.” But Leader wasn’t listening. He took one good look at Hero and he couldn’t help the rage that filled him seeing them so helpless, so scared, so vulnerable. In the hands of his worst enemy. Crying because of them.
...Fuck this. If Supervillain wanted to go against his team then he would go agains theirs.
Before either of the villains could say another word, Leader swiftly adjusted the knife and without thinking over what he was about to do any further, shoved it in Villain’s abdomen.
Villain was in so much shock they couldn’t even let out a sound, their mouth agape, not daring to move. Supervillain’s eyes widened. Everybody else held their breath.
“Let them go, you villain,” Leader spat, eyes wide with anger and hate, “before I do something I might regret.”
Supervillain stared in shock before clenching their jaw. “The audacity to call me a villain.” They hissed with poorly contained rage and brought their bloody hands to Hero’s wound. “Fine. If the hard way is what you want...”
“What? No, no, wai- NO!” Hero shrieked when Supervillain shoved their fingers in, twisting them around and around. Blood gushed out of the hero as they sobbed.
“Fine.” Leader snarled and used both hands to shove the knife as deep as possible. Villain couldn’t contain their pain anymore and whimpered.
“You... you prick! Stop.” They gasped, using their good hand to push the Leader away. But he wouldn’t budge. He wasn’t even looking at them.
Both parties glared at each other as they tortured their hostages. For a while, all one could hear in that forest were Hero’s sobs and Villain’s cries.
“Leader, enough!”
“Boss, I really don’t think-!”
“Silence!” Both Leader and Supervillain roared, curling their respective weapons deeper and deeper.
Leader frowned. He couldn’t stop. If he did, there was no telling what Supervillain might do. But he hesitated anyway. That gave the villain under him room to breathe.
Just when Hero’s superior really considered stopping, Supervillain opened their mouth. “Yeah, that’s right. Listen to your Hero, hero.”
Leader’s eye twitched. Without further ado, he pulled the knife out of Villain’s body violently. They gasped. Then Leader shoved two fingers in. The villain screamed.
“Well, Supervillain, congratulations!” Leader grinned. “You’ve successfully made me lose my shit! Your lifelong goal, wasn’t it?” He inserted another finger in and Villain arched their back, trying to twist their good hand the hero’s grip to hit him, to blow dust in his eyes, to do something! Their injured hand was useless. But it was pointless. Leader had gripped their wrist tight enough to sprain it. He probably had already. “A shame one of yours had to be sacrificed in the process!”
Supervillain screamed in rage. They didn’t care about being gentle anymore. They stabbed all four fingers into Hero’s chest. The hero let out an agonized shriek.
Leader did the same, the villain twitching and twisting their body in a desperate escape attempt. “Not gonna lie, Supervillain!” Leader taunted, curling his fingers inside Villain. “It does feel good!”
“Oh, you sick-!” Supervillain was cut off by Villain’s begging.
“Boss, please! Please, enough! He’s not going to stop, please!” There were tears in their eyes as Leader twisted his fingers inside their abdomen. Villain looked like they were going to be sick.
Supervillain, with four fingers inside Hero’s body, flinched. Leader saw it. That hesitation. He stopped.
Both teams were watching this violent scene with horror and disgust. Apart from their boss’s heavy breathing, only the hostages’ cries could be heard. Sidekick, awake and aware, clutched his stomach as Medic and Rouge helped him stay on their feet. Sniper had her fists clenched to the side, body frozen in place. Supervillain’s men looked disturbed as well. One held Henchman’s unconscious body on their back, two others looked like they were going to pounce on Leader. But none of them moved without receiving orders.
“You know what to do, Supervillain.” Leader said, stopping his movements, but keeping his fingers pressed inside. Supervillain did the same.
“Seems like you know as well.” This had to stop.
“Let Hero go.”
“Let Villain go.”
“Bitches first.”
“Don’t test me.”
They glared at each other. This wasn’t going anywhere. Reluctantly, the two enemies accepted what they had to do.
Both had to let their hostages go at the same time.
Leader started. He slowly removed one finger out of the whimpering villain. He looked at Supervillain.
Supervillain, not taking their eyes off of Villain, did the same as Leader. They removed an extra finger. Leader followed.
Both hesitantly took their fingers out of the respective hostages’ bodies. Leader resisted the urge to wipe the blood on his clothes. Supervillain let their bloody hand drop to the side.
Leader huffed and quickly stood up, taking Villain with them. The villain moaned at the sudden movement.
He and Supervillain watched each other closely. Supervillain gestured and one of their men to go to Leader. “You will bring Villain to them.” They ordered as they basically dropped Hero onto the goon’s hands.
Leader frowned. “Fine. Sniper.” Sniper was quickly by his side. “Get Hero back.”
Sniper nodded and grabbed Villain by the arm. She walked slowly towards the other villain approaching her. They met in the middle. She winced at Hero’s wound.
They stared each other. It would be so easy to drop what they had in their hands and attack. But no, they had orders. And their friends’ life was on the line.
The goon made the first move. They reached towards Villain hand. Sniper did the same. She gently touched Hero’s arm. The hero flinched.
“Hey. It’s me.” Sniper whispered, her grip on the villain loosening.
The goon took the opportunity and released Hero completely, letting them fall in Sniper’s hands. Villain clutched their abdomen as they were freed, their friend quick to grab them and take them to Supervillain. Sniper did the same.
Both parties held their breath. Leader reached out and Hero was finally, finally in their arms. The team released a huge breath.
“Hero.” Leader breathed and took a quick look at Hero’s wounds. The gash was mostly superficial, but the wound in their chest was deep and messy. Their eyes were bloodshot, dripping with tears and blood, due to Villain’s poison. Leader’s throat went dry, his eyes landing on the wound on Hero’s chest, which was still dripping blood. What had he done? “Hero… Hero, I’m…”
“I’m sorry.” Hero sobbed. “I’m sorry, Leader. I tried to find the river on my own, but-” their voice got stuck in their throat and Leader’s heart throbbed, “they found me. I was so close and they…”
“It’s okay.” Leader’s thumb gently brushed their tears away. “You’re gonna be okay.”
“I feel so… everything hurts. Leader, I’m… I’m so dizzy.” Hero’s eyes rolled to the back of their head as they fell right on Leader’s arms. Leader held them tight, even as Hero’s blood soaked their clothes.
“Shit, must be the blood loss.” Medic’s voice chimed from behind him. And the pain.
“Leader, we have to abandon the mission, we can’t go on like this.” Rogue said.
Leader had forgotten about the damn mission. He didn’t even care. He raised his head towards Supervillain, eyes still full of fury, expecting to see them gloat, smile, or even stare at him with a superior glint in their eyes.
But no, the heroes’ leader was surprised to see his nemesis tilting Villain’s chin up gently to inspect their black eye. Leader saw them say something quietly, but he couldn’t hear what was said from there. What he did notice was Villain mouthing “I’m sorry”. Supervillain shook their head.
Then, as if sensing Leader’s gaze, they turned around and looked. The supervillain had a look in their eye that Leader had never seen before. He returned that look.
They sized up each other, both keeping their guard up, even though both knew there would be no more fighting today.
Eventually, Leader turned his gaze away. He looked at Hero, unconscious in his arms. He adjusted a few strands of their hair.
“Come on, Hero.” Leader whispered softly, gesturing at Medic. “Let’s get you all healed up and home, yeah?”
He turned his back on his enemy as Medic took the hero from his arms and laid them on the ground, immediately getting to work. With the corner of his eye, he noticed Supervillain quietly leave, carrying Villain in their arms.

Ch. 26.
Day 8;
@may-lancholy: caretaker burnout
@whumpay: panic attack
Ao3 or under the cut
Jamie continues to struggle with nightmares and being afraid to sleep. Alejandro, Alex, Farah, Gaz, Ghost, Layla, Nikolai, Price, Rodolfo, and Soap worry about this serious setback. Soap has been the one struggling to get Jamie to sleep. The Scotsman remains resolute in his desire to be the one to get Jamie to sleep. Believing that alternating who puts Jamie to bed every night doesn’t help Jamie is a point no one disputes. Everyone takes this as Soap’s way to say he wants to care for Jamie rather than Nikolai, since the Russian has been the one who stayed in Jamie’s room overnight for a week.
Soap can feel watching Jamie be terrified to sleep, and wake up after a few hours, terrified from a nightmare is taking a toll on him. He prefers to keep it from the others. Not because of shame about his plan not working. He still believes he’s right and doesn’t want Jamie to deal with someone new caring for her every night, even if it’s her friends. How come trauma recovery isn’t a one-size-fits-all process? Soap sighs. I know Layla’s recovery wasn’t easy, and she’s still dealing with issues, but her nightmares didn’t result in fear of sleeping. He glances at Jamie, asleep for now. Soap knows he should tell the others, but he doesn’t want to add to their concerns. If Jamie doesn’t appear tired, he can keep this from the others. Soap’s mind drifts back to the fear that Jamie can’t recover from her trauma, he feels anxious. He leaves the room, closing the door behind him.
Soap sits on the floor, back against the wall. His mind plays scenarios. All are different versions of Jamie’s time in Task Force 141 ending because of her trauma. Soap finds it hard to accept that Price would never end the current agreement. Soap’s anxiety turns into panic.
“Johnny!”
Soap doesn’t hear Ghost’s voice. Nor does he notice Ghost kneeling in front of him with hands on his shoulders. The man knows Soap is having a panic attack. Ghost suspects he knows the cause. He knows he needs to calm Soap before he can figure out if he’s right.
“Johnny, you’re ok. Follow my breathing."
Ghost inhales through his nose, holds for five seconds, and exhales through his mouth. Soap struggles to follow Ghost at first, but soon his breathing matches Ghost’s.
Ghost sighs, relieved once Soap is calm and willing to tell him what caused the panic attack. His relief fades as Soap tells him the cause.
Soap realizes Ghost would inform Price about last night. He knew he’d be called into Price’s office. Price sits behind the desk. Soap sits on the chair before the desk.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Everyone is worried, as it is.”
“That’s a weak excuse, and you know it! Everyone wants to help Jamie recover. Everyone also knows the toll this situation has on their own mental health on all of us. We need to take turns supporting Jamie in order to keep our own mental health in check. I said nothing about your proposal to be the sole caretaker for Jamie because I thought you’d know to tell someone you need a break.”
Soap remains silent. He knows Price is right. Price tells him he’s arranging a meeting with everyone else later today and dismisses Soap. The Scotsman leaves the room, knowing he screwed up, but he thought he did that what’s best for Jamie as she recovers from trauma. Price watches Soap leave. He worries about the man’s mental health. Price still struggles with the knowledge that this situation is his and Ghost’s fault. He worries about the toll this is taking on everyone, but he knows everyone refuses to give up on Jamie. Even if it feels like they’re waiting for a miracle. Everyone knows they can’t compare Jamie’s recovery to Layla’s, even if it gives them hope Jamie will recover from her trauma.

“Get lost.” Despite the sea beast re-submerging, Shanks still feels the fear he felt upon seeing it. He turns around, pulling Luffy into his chest and soothing the boy’s nerves.
“Shanks, your arm!?” The man becomes quickly aware of the limb no longer hanging at his side and suppresses the pain, the agony, the- “It’s my fault!!” His attention moves back to the boy.
“It’s okay. It’s just an arm. I’m just glad you’re okay.” His lips press to the boy’s head and he tightens his grip as he pushes away the pain. How are earth are you going to react?
-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-
Upon returning to Windmill Village, Shanks hands Luffy over to Makino and quickly retreats to the Red Force. He does not want to see you right now. He’s quick to make his crew fix him up without alerting anyone in the village. He knows you’re out buying supplies and won’t be back for a while.
Little does Shanks know, you were done shopping and in Partys Bar when Makino ran out and took Luffy from him. After listening to Luffy cry about Shanks losing an arm, you stomp back to the ship. Why on earth did he not come to you?
The door to your shared cabin slams open. Both Shanks and Hongo’s eyes find your own and the latter quickly finishes the last bandage and all but runs from the room. Not leaving without a quick ‘good luck’ to his captain.
Shanks’ eyes are wide and terror lines his features as he watches you walk over and sit next to him on the bed.
As careful as you can, you place your hand on his left shoulder, careful to be above the bandages and off the wound. “Love? What happened? Why didn’t you come find me when you came back?” The sweetness in your voice calms the captain’s nerves and he starts to melt.
Shanks breaks down before he can respond, sobbing as you pull him in and tuck his head into the crook of your neck. “I-it was going to att-attack Luffy. I had to-” He speaks between sobs and you run one hand along his spine, the other holding the back of his head.
“Shhh baby it’s okay. You’re both okay, I promise.” You allow the room to fall into silence, the sobs erupting from Shanks’ body being the only noise. Keeping your hand running along his back, you sit with him in your arms until the sobs slow to hiccups and his breathing starts to level out.
Before you can move his head so you can look into his eyes, Shanks is already talking. “I’m so sorry, sweets. I’m so sorry I can’t be the man you deserve. I’m sorry I can’t be the man you fell for. I-” You shut him up with your lips pressed to his. Andddd with what should’ve been a heated kiss - the two of you are known for those - the tears start again and he pulls back. “I can’t even hold you anymore..” You try not to watch the now stub of his left arm reach out for you.
“Shanks, my love, look at me.” Your hands find his face and force him to look at you. “I have never loved you because you came with all four limbs. I have always loved you and will always love you because you’re funny and playful and brave.” With each new reason, your lips find a new spot on his face to lay a careful kiss. “And you care so much about your friends.” Your lips meet his and this time, he sweetly kisses you back, afraid you’ll break if he’s not careful. His hand finds the back of your neck and holds you there.

The Red Force prepares to leave Windmill Village, and you watch Shanks say goodbye to Luffy, giving the boy his hat and a promise to meet him again in the future.
Shanks comes aboard and you run up to him, dropping whatever you were loading up. “Let’s go to the Grand Line, baby!” Throwing yourself onto him, you feel one arm wrap low around your body and then feel Shanks sink into himself. Your arms drop and you grab his face. “Shanks. What’s wrong? Aren’t you excited?”
He nods in your hands, tears starting to line the bottom of his eyes. “I’m very excited. I just wish I could still pick you up when I am.” You frown, confusion lining your features as you pull him to stand up straight.
“Who said you can’t pick me up anymore?” It’s Shanks’ turn to have confusion lining his features as your arms wrap around his neck and you jump up, wrapping your legs tightly around his waist. His arm snaps up, tightly holding your back as his eyes widen. “Looks like you’re holding me just fine, pretty boy.” You tip your head back so you can look at him. The tears slip out as Shanks looks down at your torso then up to your face. Your lips meet his in a soft kiss before he can say anything.
Pulling back, he speaks. “I don’t deserve you, beautiful.” His forehead lands on your shoulder and you move a hand into his hair.
“You deserve everything you’ve always had, Shanks. You’re not any less of a man now. You’re still the man I fell for. Let me take care of you the way you’ve always taken care of me.” He nods against your shoulder and you drop your head against his.
-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-
The progress is slow as Shanks readjusts to his new life. He’s figuring out how to captain the ship, fight in battles, be the friend his crewmates all know, and be the boyfriend you’ve always loved with one less arm.
His crew supports him when he needs help, but you are at his side all hours of the day. He leans on you more than he’d like to and requires your support in ways that make him guilty for not being able to support you back.
Shanks still cries most days, out of sadness for not being the man he was, out of frustration for not being able to do simple things, and often out of anger when the day ends in his shared cabin with you, not able to hold you the way he wants to.
-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-%-
Everything seems to change for Shanks the day the Red Force sails into the Grand Line. Everyone’s excited. The booze is coming out, the music is playing, the Red Hair Pirates are having a party. And you run out of your cabin to find him on deck.
Arms wide as you get close to him, you jump up and he catches you without fail, already holding you close when you wrap yourself around his body. “We did it, Shanks! We made it to the New World!”
The tears slip from his eyes, wetting the fabric on your shoulder. He can’t believe they made it. But, better yet, he can’t believe he caught you. He can hold you. Nothing can stop him now.

Mission day begins at five in the morning. Jamie wakes up feeling worse than she has been. Her movements are slow as she gets ready. Jamie feels drained of her energy once she’s dressed. Jamie heads to the mess hall.
As Jamie enters the room, Gaz, Ghost, Price, and Soap notice Jamie’s pale face. It’s clear she’s sick. They know she’ll argue about staying behind.
Price observes Jamie eating slow pace once they have their meals. It’s clear she’s trying to act ok, but is not hungry. He waits a few minutes before taking Jamie out of the room.
Price takes Jamie to his office.
Once in side the office, he has Jamie sit on the chair.
“How long have you felt like this?”
“Three days.”
“Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I’m not missing this important mission!”
“You know going on a mission unwell puts everyone at risk. This is foolish Jamie. You’re staying behind.”
Jamie knows she shouldn’t argue. Price sighs and leads her out of the office.
The two enter Jamie’s room. Price has Jamie get changed into her pajamas in the bathroom. While he waits, Price attempts to find a friend who can stay and watch Jamie. Not trusting she’ll stay in bed and rest. The concern is since this is last minute, that she’ll be alone for at least ten hours.
“Damn it,” Price mutters. “Why can’t she just accept she’s sick and rest? Now I’m going to be worried about her during the mission.”

After a few days of giving Jamie Zzquil, Price hopes proper sleep will help Jamie think better when he’s talking to her. As he thought, the others aren’t sure about his plan.
“It’s difficult,” Farah says. “We don’t wish to see her distressed, but she won’t overcome her fear of Ghost and Price through inaction,
The others agree. They make a plan.
Price sits in his office, waiting for Soap’s message. While he’s the one who said he wants to see Jamie, he worries about upsetting her. He knows Farah made a valid point. He waits for the text from Soap. Price works on paperwork while waiting.
He works for an hour when the text comes. He stops working the second his phone dings.
Price stands in the doorway. He sees Layla in her dog form lying on the couch with her head on Jamie’s lap. It’s clear she’s aiming to help keep Jamie calm. He walks into the room at a slow pace. Layla, Gaz, and Soap watch. Price stands beside the coffee table. Close to Jamie, but she still has space.
“I don’t remember the last time I saw you smile.”
Price has difficulty recalling when Jamie last smiled prior to the incident and betrayal. He struggles to avoid thinking about the immense suffering he and Ghost put Jamie through.
