whumpmas in july day 2: favorite whump tropes

oh boy, i was looking forward to this one! 😍😍😍

i obviously adore stoic whumpees who feel they cannot show their pain or distress. i love ✨ misunderstandings ✨ but not the stupid kind, the sort where the conflict is believable and the hurt stems from past traumas (i.e. a dubious ally turning traitor or a whumpee believing their caretaker is their owner). i also love something i call “social whump”, being when a character is heavily ostracized or outcast, often mistreated, by their group or social setting. emotional whump is a big one for me, especially angst that revolves around low self worth and dehumanization.

i love begging: pathetic begging, kneeling, sobbing, pleading, bargaining, fawning, hysteria, terror, the whole nine yards. all begging is good (especially when it’s quiet and desperate) but begging that’s big and heartbreaking is always a massive favorite. especially if they cry. gimme all the weeping certainty of horrors.

noncon whump is also a favorite of mine, again, particularly if it’s institutional in some way (like the bbu with Romantics). noncon whump as a “casual” feature of the world the whumpee lives in, something almost unremarkable, in a way, but that’s another layer of horror. noncon whump is also great as a horrifying punishment, especially if it’s a “beat-down” style of punishment, gang-assault as an act of breaking the whumpee or punishing them for some big infraction. the subtle awfulness of casual sexual hurt, whatever the nature of the whumpee, is very good when done well.

when it comes to physical punishment, i really love tropes in fantasy whump that hurt a specific group (i.e. silver hurting werewolves or sunlight hurting vampires). i also love ritualized or systemic punishment, such as whippings or pillories or denial of necessities like food or medicine. stuff that emphasizes power, control and dehumanization. punishment that centers on showing a whumpee their “place”.

i love team dynamics, whether that be a loving assemblage of caretakers for a lone whumpee, a band of whumpees forging a bond through suffering, or a cruel or apathetic clique excluding a member. i love cold and calculating whumpers with a lot of self-righteous justification for their actions (but brutal heavy-handed schoolyard bullies are fun too). i love patient, quiet caretakers often burdened by their own responsibilities or hurts and also sunshiny sweethearts who see the best in everyone.

i love long-term imprisonment, institutionalized slavery (bbu, gladiator, fantasy, you name it), and a lot of hurt from the top down, rigid stratification and hierarchy meant to coerce and punish.

Whumpas in July: Day 1 and Day 2

Late entry to Whumpas! (unfortunately it is almost July 3 in my timezone, but my previous attempt was deleted by Tumblr instead of getting posted, I still hope it counts)

Day 1: Introduce yourself

Hi everyone! I’m Nila, I go by Archer as well. I am an intern physician from India. My main blog is @ambidextrousarcher which is a reference to an Indian mythical character, Arjun, who is often a protagonist/PoV character in my stories.

I discovered that finding hurt/comfort interesting has a specific name to it fairly recently, but since I found the community, I have avidly enjoyed a lot of good whump! Sadly, due to lack of time, I can be a bit of a lurker sometimes.

My favourite medium of whump is prose, although I am discovering an interest in visual mediums of whump lately as well.

I am trying to write my whump stories but am unfortunately in a trough with regard to inspiration, I hope that Whumpmas helps a little with that!

I would like to end this intro with a shoutout to @whumperofworlds @i-eat-worlds and @whumpninja for being really sweet with me when I just entered this community, as well as @redwingedwhump whose writings were crucial in inspiring me to be a more active (such as it is) member of this beautiful community!

Day 2: Favourite Tropes

Here is a non-exhaustive list of my favourite tropes: (Top 3 + 2 extras)

1. The “good” whumpee: The whumpee who is in this mess because of a moral reason, usually heroic. Self-sacrifice, whumpee with a code of honour, whumpee who endures for a greater cause, whumpee who tries not to let caretaker just how badly they are hurt, the list goes on.

2. The unravelling of the stoic whumpee: Whumpee who is stoic (usually an extension of the “good” whumpee aka they want to protect caretaker) until. It is just too much. They lose control over the pain, and tears ensue. Especially love it if whumpee in their PoV is trying to keep a smile on their face just for caretaker’s sake, and that is precisely what hurts caretaker the most.

3. Misunderstood whumpee: Whumpee who is, intentionally or unintentionally, misunderstood. By a loved one, the system itself, someone they idolize, you name it, I probably love it.

4. Caretaker PoV at crucial moments: Moments like “Oh, God, this can’t be anyone else but this person I care for/love.” Moments where Whumpee is having a breakdown. I love caretaker’s PoV when it is carefully used.

5. Historical period whump: Historical fiction is my favourite genre, and there are so many whump possibilities in this genre!

I've never done an event (event?) like this before, and im really really excited to participate! I'm only an hour early to day two, since ive been writing tomorrows prompt, but I'm going to slap this here anyways!

Day 2) What are your top three favorite whump tropes?

I love, and I mean LOVE, whumper turned caretaker. Especially if the whump sorta continues, or if the sadism and reasons for whumping whumpee are still there, but there is this newfound hesitance, maybe remorse. I like it when the whumper initiates this change, but then there's the times where whumper is forced to hold back. I like that less but it's still so good!

Pet whump. I loved the whole BBU thing, its so creepy. Whether whumpee understands it's wrong and has to go along with it, refuses to go along with it, or only knows a life of going along with it. And the healing and reconditioning/unconditioning they have to go through? That's the shit.

Anything with vampires. I know that's not a trope.. But I love love love vampires. Especially when people have their own twists to the species. My vampires don’t react to silver, but I love reading about ones that do - digging deep into flesh, being unable to rip it off, melting through layers of muscle and flesh!! The searing pain, unimaginable, hot and white, can’t focus on anything else. Where is it used? In a muzzle, on their face? In their mouth? On their neck? It’s literally so good!

(If anyone wants to DM me… I could go on for hours talking about whumpy things, oc's, anything - I could use more whump friends since I currently have... uh... zero)

What are your top three favorite whump tropes?

so i'm gonna add a caveat to this question: my top three favorite whump tropes that i haven't gushed about for previous WIJ prompts. here's those, if you want to take a look:

those are definitely some of my tip-top favorites, but i'll allow something else to take the spotlight for once, lest i repeat myself. these aren't in any particular order.

Tiny Whump

my love of tiny whump is no secret. in fact, i love tiny stuff even outside of whump, which is why i'm also in the giant/tiny community (my blog for that is @smallsday). but since i love g/t and whump, there's no reason not to do both at the same time!

the thing about tiny whump is that it makes everything more terrifying. to someone who's only a few inches tall, even a regular human is a massive threat. this not only creates more unique & creative opportunities for whump, but adds an inherent element of fear into any mixed-size caretaker dynamics. if a tiny whumpee is rescued from some sort of whump situation, they're going to be scared of the (from their perspective) giant who rescued them, too! no matter how kind a caretaker is, there is always an unbalanced power dynamic, and i love seeing characters navigate that.

Deprivation of Basic Needs

this is a classic that encompasses so many wonderful types of whump, and i have used it extensively in my main story with Kane's starvation. i'm talking about stuff allll the way at the bottom of the hierarchy of needs.

TAKE IT AWAY! whumpees don't need that stuff! or at least, they don't need more of it than they require to survive. this is why i love immortal whumpees and nonhuman whumpees so much. humans are fragile enough that there's only so much suffering they can endure before ending up dead. and dead is no fun, because then there's no more suffering! an immortal whumpee, or a less-fragile nonhuman whumpee, can reach so much greater heights of deprivation.

this trope comes in many forms. starvation, dehydration, suffocation, and sleep deprivation are the most common, and they're all classics. cold whump and heat whump fulfill similar niches. it's a physical-based trope in general, but you can even get a little more psychological with it and deprive a whumpee of stuff like clothing, hygiene, bedding, shelter, space to move around in, and other things we'd consider basics but aren't necessarily immediately critical to survival. sensory deprivation is also common.

i've also had an idea knocking around in my head about getting more... niche with it, probably in a lab whump setting. there are so many basic needs and bodily functions that a whumper wouldn't be able to deprive a whumpee of under normal circumstances, but if a lab whumper tried really hard, they could get it done--especially if the whumpee possessed some level of immortality. deprive them of the ability to move at all. take away their ability to pee. take away their ability to blink, as their eyes dry up painfully. TAKE AWAY THEIR HEART'S ABILITY TO BEAT, for an immortal whumpee who will remain painfully aware through it all even as their body reacts in utmost panic. in the world of fiction, anything is possible.

Enemy Caretaker

i looooove an enemy caretaker. with known, friendly caretakers, such as friends, family, and partners, there is an element of trust. this lowers the tension, so this tends to be my least favorite kind of caretaker, though i do like it still. with stranger caretakers, there is an element of distrust and suspense. whumpee is still afraid, they can't trust this complete random who's come to their rescue, they need to build up a relationship. i love that!!!

but there is something even better than the stranger caretaker: the enemy. the person whumpee knows hates them, the person whumpee knows they have every reason to fear, especially at their most vulnerable. i'm not talking about "one good-hearted member of the organization responsible for whumpee's torment leaves said organization and rescues them". i'm talking about whumpee's personal enemy. someone they have a storied mutual hatred with. someone who has every reason to leave them for dead or even actively make it worse.

but they don't. they put their history aside and help whumpee, despite everything. and yet! whumpee would still be afraid of them, right? why wouldn't they be? their life is in the hands of someone with a potential grudge. but it all works out, with double that relationship-building needing to be done.

my favorite type of enemy caretaker is a former whumpee put in a position where they're helping their whumper-now-turned-whumpee. i love to see a role reversal like that where the whumpee is now the one with all the power and the whumper gets to be scared. but i love all types of enemy caretakers!

Whumpmas in July Day 2: What are your three favorite whump tropes?

Interrogations. You already know this if you've read any of my long-form whump writing, I'm sure. The high stakes... the potential for so much delicious defiance... the adversarial intimacy between interrogator and interrogation subject... what about it isn't good?

Mercy killings. One of my tried-and-true "whump scene to fall asleep to" tropes, and also the closest I generally get to actual comfort/caretaking. I'm partial to mercy killings between best friends or mentor and student, but romantic partners also works. So tragic 🥲

Executions. Yep, another type of death whump, because death whump is my favorite. Lots of potential for stoic/defiant whumpees here, too, and it goes so well with so many of my favorite types of whump: dystopian whump, spy whump, military whump... Executions were my absolute most favorite whump for a long, long time.

My top three favorite whump tropes are difficult to pick. Because there are so many. So I'm going to do 3 that I'm currently hyperfixated on.

Forced to watch--I fucking live for this shit. It is simply chef's kiss perfection.

I am really, really into like incorrect beliefs about each other....like when caretaker believes whumpee is dangerous, but then learns they can be trusted or vice versa (I have a couple of planned pieces about this, but Lethal Weapon is probably my best example of this....or Make Me Your Villain lol)

And dreams that don't reflect the reality of something...like when Whumpee dreams they are still with Whumper. Or Caretaker dreams they didn't save Whumpee in time. Both of them waking covered in sweat with the other trying to comfort them. I just love it

Top Three Whump Tropes

Lab whump

Lab whump is my all time favourite trope, medical whump and evil doctors fall under that umbrella too. Mad scientists are just fun, and more than often extremely attractive 😏 something about that white coat just gets me.

Captivity Whump

Ive loved captivity whump and kidnapping for a long long time. Especially if whumpee is tied up or restrained somehow. Prison whump also falls under this category. Long term captivity is even better, seeing what it does to someone’s psyche is always interesting. The aftercare of being rescued is a huge part of the whole process.

Pet whump

Pet whump is a trope that I always come back to, like some sort of morbid fascination. It's just on the verge of being a squick for me, but more often than not I really enjoy it. There's different flavours of this as well, slavery, thralls, prisoners, lab rats. It's all related in some way or another.
