Whumpmas in July 2026 Day 2: What is your earliest memory of enjoying whump?
oooooh, fantastic question 👀😈 i have enjoyed reading angst and actively hunting for - according to my childhood memory - “books where arguments happen” 😂😈 i have always enormously enjoyed anything with begging (how little has changed 😂). my favorite genre was Victorian-era novels and mystery novels, so, i got a lot of those Angst Whumperflies 💖
this likely isn’t 100% accurate, but my first concrete memory of “oh, i Like what is happening and i want to read and reread anything like it” is when i read a young readers version of The Prince and the Pauper 👀💖 iykyk but there is a scene where a disgraced former noble (the protector and friend of the titular prince-disguised-as-a-pauper) sacrifices himself to be put in the stocks and publicly whipped in order to protect the prince 🥺🥺🥺 i…distinctly remember wishing that the scene was written in more detail… 😈😩👀
The Whumpy Printing Press is seeking submissions for our next anthology, After the Hurt!
The theme of this anthology is basically the effects of whump. So this could be escape, recovery, caretaking. But it could also be flashbacks, recapture, or even a whumpee becoming so conditioned that whumper doesn’t bother hurting them any more.
For this anthology, we are looking for stories in the following categories:
Micro-fiction: 250 words or less
Flash fiction: 251-1,000 words
Short Story: 1,001-7,499 words
Novelette: 7,500-17,500 words
Each author can submit one story per category. So for example, you can submit a short story and a micro fiction but you can’t submit two micro fictions.
Compensation: ebook contributor’s copy, one free paperback OR $10 USD, and discounts on additional paperbacks
50% of proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the National Network to End Domestic Violence.

this year has been pretty rough 😭 my beloved new home of minneapolis got invaded by fascists, the winter was bitter and cold and long, and depression episodes hit harder than they have in years 💔🥺 however? community has rallied in solidarity in ways that truly humble me to my core, my job has been a genuine blessing, my friends are beautiful & brave & wonderful, and i got to share pride with my nearest and dearest with the city i adore 🥹❤️🩹🫂💖 most of all, i am feeling the stirrings of writing desire stir up again and i can’t wait to come back with some hot fresh angst for my beautiful whump fellows 😈💖
