Mentors & Gift Giving

This is a topic, or perhaps better put as the beginning of one, that I have sat on for quite some time now.

A lot of the time on Tumblr when someone mentions mentors, they are referring to a practitioner they think of as knowledgeable and have placed in a educator or teaching role within their own practice. This post isn't really going to have anything to do with that. For one, my family taught me most of what I know, and for another, I have only sought out one mentor in this regard who was not related to me. But we have seen how y'all react to closed practices being discussed already, so this will not be getting into that either.

Spirits, saints, and deities make for some of the best mentors, in my opinion. Not only are they (mostly) accessible, but I've found that the gifts they give, or take, carry the greatest impact.

Personally, I do not do devotional acts or relationships with the entities I have fostered close/frequent dealings with, excepting my ancestors. This means that all of my deities have taken on, and more often than not started from or adjacent to, a mentorship or guiding role in my practice. Approaching from the mindset of a student instead of a devotee can be challenging, and oftentimes rather confusing, for religious or actively devoted practitioners. Not many are even aware that they can ask for both without risking one or the other.

I say ask for a reason, I might add. It is more of a request than a demand, more of an outstretched hand than a binding pact (if you so choose). There are spirits who welcome the arrangement, just as there are those who would refuse or outright take "offense."

On Tumblr in particular, I have noticed that spirits are seldom considered when discussing the search for a mentor. Although it is common enough to hear of beginner or branching/exploring witches and occultists searching for mentors. I have seen little in the way of directing such searches from the cyber to the spiritual. Though, to be fair, there are plenty of posts advocating for sitting with the intelligence of planets and plants, there is little that goes beyond that.

And while I do not think myself up to the task of detailing the entire journey - seldom does it even remain the same from one person to the next - I did want to offer this one thought, from my own perspective, to the void that is the Tumblrsphere.

Now that I have your attention, these are the details:

I would like one or two short- or long term mentors who can help me expand my knowledge in witchcraft.

I obviously don't know everything and I'd love to learn from others!

Some things I'd be interested in learning about:

mediumship, methods to train my clairs, green witchcraft, spellcrafting, crystals, baneful magic, seidr, demons, draconic witchcraft, and other witch paths that are (obv) not closed.

I have at least a basic knowledge on most of these topics but.. ya never know.

I do feel the need to say that I am not always able to do things immediately when you ask me to because i have mental health issues and it just doesn't work like that :') I would appreciate if you, as my mentor, would also reach out to me because i can be quite forgetful and I don't mean any harm by not messaging you for a couple days. I just forget sometimes. :/

I’ve got a question for more experienced witches.

What are some of the things you incorporated into your daily practice?

I want to start and keep some sort of routine for a daily practice, something to help ground me in my everyday life and keep me focused. Also something that can help me grown in my craft. There’s still so much I don’t know, but I want to learn.

Are You Ready to be Teaching?

Especially on witchy discord, it's really not hard to find servers offering free classes, lectures, etc. all being developed within a tiny community. Which is great! Unless the speakers and teachers are underqualified. A lot of us want to jump into an educators role really quickly, and that's very admirable! But we don't want to contribute to the spread of misinformation and make it harder for students to find really in-depth information.

Signs you are ready to teach:

You’ve known the material for a long time. A teacher should have extended experience with the material they're teaching. A few months isn't that long. A year maybe, if you're only teaching the most surface level intro.

You’re knowledgable in theory AND in practice. Both are extremely important. If you're teaching somebody to ultimately do a thing, you should have done it yourself. Would you take cooking classes from someone who has read a lot of cookbooks but never made anything in them?

You pull from a wide range of sources. Where are you getting your information from? Best case scenario, you can offer your students a mix of books, hands-on experience, testimonies and tips from other practitioners, academic articles, and other classes/lectures/workshops. Worst case scenario, the only source is tumblr, or your own UPG.

You’ve studied more than just what you use regularly. Your students WILL ask you questions you aren't prepared for. They will pull in comparisons from paths you don't follow, and ask simple-sounding questions with complicated answers. I'd say you should know at least 110٪ of what you're prepared to teach, to account for this and not hit a wall the second you go off script.

You know how to teach it in different ways. There are many different types of learners. One must be ready to tailor the lesson to all of them.

You can handle the responsibility. Teaching is a big deal! Especially mentorship (in which case multiply everything I've said by five or more.) People are relying on you and putting their trust in you. You're taking an active role in shaping their craft. Are you ready for that? Can you stick with them? Sometimes accidents happen and life hits the fan, but in general don't sign up for anything you can't trust yourself to follow through with.

Potential Red Flags:

The teacher is speaking for a group they are not a part of. An outsider’s perspective on something specific to a group may lack nuance at best, and be deeply culturally insensitive at worst. 

They’ve supposedly finished their studies. That isn’t a thing.

They have an agenda. This isn’t always horrible, but it’s important to keep in mind. How might their agenda influence the material they’re teaching you? What might they be leaving out? 

It’s all about the NEXT lesson. If you’ve already taken a (paid) class or two but you really need to go to the next level/go on that retreat/shell out more money to “get it,” then it’s probably a scam. Especially if you benefit from bringing in more people.
