studying the old ones
Lately I’ve been working on writing the first draft of my character Moxie’s story, but I’ve recently gotten a little unmotivated writing forward. I decided to make a sort of cover illustration for the story to help inspire me :’) It certainly isn’t going to be the official cover or anything, but I still really enjoyed making it!
I was heavily inspired by the song “Hell’s Coming With Me” by Poor Man’s Poison, which I think fits Moxie’s backstory and character almost perfectly! I used that song to help me decide what to put in the illustration. I kept changing the illustration beneath Moxie’s cloak, but finally I decided on one of the central characters of his story— the High Priestess of Lowl.
I can’t speak too much on her because of spoilers, but she is Moxie’s highest superior. She is the leader of— as well as the most powerful being —in the Syndicate of Lowl. I will probably show a little bit of her here and there, but for now I want a lot of her to be a mystery :’)
Name: Lamiaceae Blink
Class: Wizard
Race: Tiefling
Alignment: True Neutral
Age: 30(?)
Gender: Male (he/him)
History: Lamiaceae- Lamia for short- isn’t very vocal about his past and tends to keep his cards close to his chest. Only giving vague hand-wavy explanations for who and what he is. “I’m no less a person than you” and keeping it at that. All that can be inferred is that he apparently grew up secluded.
Personality: He is a patient opportunist, content waiting for the perfect moment to act before quickly stepping back and letting others take the spot light. Has a mildly obsessive personality and once on a topic he will delve too deep and let it consume him for a short while. Struggles with intrusive thoughts and tends to do things that he's not even sure why he did them. Mild anger issues and doesn't know how to Express his feelings in a productive manner. A bit of a sadistic streak and is prone to getting caught up in the heat of a moment.
and got good P U S S Y
I should be in bed...
Yeah~ LEveln’ up. I still need to update his sheet with new spells, but i decided with this level up, he needed a new look.
Also, I did a little research (tm) and found out Great swords are like 4.5 feet tall???!!?1 WTF thats like, two thirds of my body, and Devotion is shorter than me. So yeah, wtf.
I burnt myself out and forgot to post more on Tumblr. I’d like to give this app another shot.
I made this character recently for an art challenge and ended up falling in love with him. The challenge was to shuffle your music playlist and the first four songs would determine a certain trait about the character. I somehow got a most of my favorite songs, which added to my love for Moxie.
✨GENDER: “Interlude IV” - Zach Callison, Grace Rolek
This song is a duet, so I decided to improvise. Moxie is male, but his mask has what’s known as an “imprint”, and the imprint is female. An imprint is a small bit of the previous wearer’s soul and personality trapped in a mask. The current wearer may exhibit similar quirks and habits to the imprint. I also thought it fit with the song’s lead male singer having a female echo through the song.
✨STYLE: “Soldier, Poet, King” - The Oh Hellos
This song always gave me serious DND vibes, so I definitely took the fantasy/DND route. I ended up designing a tiefling wizard or some magic user (I always wanted a tiefling OC). I haven’t decided if he’s going to take after the “poet” or “king”, but right now I gave him more a poet vibe.
✨PERSONALITY: “Villain” - Stella Jang
My favorite song came on for this and I was so psyched. Based on this song, I gave him a bit of a morally gray, anti hero/anti villain vibe. He has a twisted past and committed many crimes, but he also has a warped sense of justice. He’s aware of his own faults, and knows at some point the sword of justice will turn to strike him. However, there’s no telling where the imprint’s personality ends and where his begins.
✨COLOR PALETTE: “The Other Side” - Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron
Pretty self explanatory. I’m glad I got a more varying color palette this time, but it was a little hard to choose colors 🥲
I seriously love Moxie, so don’t be surprised if I share a lot about him! I made a few posts about him already that I’ll share later.
I wanted to draw some of little Moxie! His upbringing is a little complicated to say the least— as well as rather dark. He was “gifted” what is known as an imprinted mask at a young age (children are actually prohibited from owning imprints by law, but he certainly wasn’t told this nor raised in a law abiding environment), and he began training in magic around the same time.
He was a young adolescent when he was first able to summon his familiar, Twig. Since the environment Moxie was raised in was devoid of friends/allies and was trained to be skeptical of everyone around him, the little weasel became his one close friend. He knew he could always confide in it. Even as an adult, he holds Twig in such high regard that I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say the familiar is the one creature he truly loves to a fault.
“I’ve begun to notice something off about the boy.”
“He’s always been off— you must be more specific.”
“He… he developed a sort of imaginary friend. He talks to himself even when others are present. He completely ignores his peers, only speaking to the entity he calls ‘Lucy’. I… I think his connection to the mask is cementing.”
“Hmm… I’ll add it to my notes. I’ll try and discuss it with him in our next session.”
🕯🔥🕯
Another digitalized sketch of young Moxie! A common question I got when I announced my concept of imprints on other sites was if the wearers of imprinted masks could see their mask’s past wearer. The answer is yes! The longer the current wearer wears the mask, the more often the shadow will appear and the longer it stays. Eventually a connection will form so the current wearer will see the shadow even without the mask. The wearer is usually the only one able to see the ghost, but there are specific races that are capable of seeing them if they have a strong, deep connection with magic.
Moxie started to see Lucy some time after he was given his mask. He saw her more as a guardian and a friend, much like Twig. As he grew up and his masked persona began to develop more of Lucy’s personality and quirks, he began to realize whoever she had been hadn’t been a good person. This doesn’t stop him from wearing her mask of his own free will, but he has very mixed feelings towards her to this day.
