Phenotype asks are opening in April!!
On April 11th I am opening asks for Phenotyping dragons!
This means, based of an image or description of a dragon, I will guess the genes that the dragon may have!
Rules for these ask when they are submitted:
As of right now the dragon being posted must a pure Icewing, since those are the only chapters out right now, if they are not an Icewing you can still submit them, but they will only be posted when the associated chapters are out.
You are allowed to submit dragons before the official Phenotype ask opening date of April 11th, and are encouraged to! They will be answered when it hits April 11th!
Only one dragon per each submission; you may make multiple separate submissions per a day!
Cannon characters are encouraged to be submitted!
Images are preferred, but descriptions are allowed. Descriptions without much detail will likely have less genes accurately phenotyped. If you wish to stay an annon while submitting an image, please send a message to me with the image. The conversation will be deleted once the image is seen and saved.
Icewings that can be fully explained by the first 3 released chapters (being the Base color, Leucism and Albinism) will be answered immediately, any Icewings that can’t be explained in those three chapters will not be posted until whatever chapter required to explain them is posted.
Some dragons may not be posted as they don’t work under the genes built, I will privately respond to these submissions with what I can phenotype as well as what deviates from what genes I have written. There is a chance that if a dragon has only one or two traits that could be reinterpreted into this system it may be posted, with a note at the end covering what visual differences were reinterpreted. Please do not expect this with every character.
All hybrids should have their tribes listed, it’s recommended to also list tribes for ‘pure’ tribes as any dragon I cannot discern the tribe of will not be posted.
Each time a new chapter is released, whatever dragons phenotypes will be reblogged with the new genes. They will have the tag #phenotypereblog, as well as other key tags.
Less of a rule and more of an advisory: if there are too many submissions a per day a rule regarding the amount of submissions per day may be put in place. This is not to discourage submissions, it’s more so due to personal time constraints, as well as the idea of seeing a lot of submissions is scary to me!
That is all for now! Can’t wait to see the dragons you all want phenotyped!
WOF Phylogenetic tree!
Okay, so who are the ancestors? What are their traits? I don't have names for them at the moment, but their traits, based on the resulting generation of most likely ancestral traits created by the phylogeny program, are the following:
12: heightened senses, venom, vibration sensing, 4 wings, metamorphosis 13: venom, 4 wings 14: 2 wings, venom, prehensile til, photosynthetic abilities 15: 2 wings, chromatophores (color changing) 16: 2 wings, heightened senses, larger size, large lungs, webbed claws, gills, bioluminescence 17: 2 wings, elemental breath, larger size, large wings/extremities 18: 2 wings, elemental breath, extreme thermal tolerance 19: 2 wings, elemental breath, extreme thermal tolerance 20: 2 wings, elemental breath, heightened senses, forked tongue
Data/methods below the cut, as well as a (brief) dive into evolutionary history for Beetle-Night Hybrids and why I want some history on Beetles lol
Going off of personal headcanons, climate HEAVILY effects the coloration of both IceWings and IceWings. So what would Darkstalker and Whiteout look like?
IceWing coloration is dependant on temperature during incubation - the colder it is, the paler the dragonet. The royal family also has a lot of sharper, "rarer" traits, such as a crown of horns, slimmer limbs, kinked horns, light blue eyes, and white scales. Due to these traits being recessive, however, the two would likely only inherit the serpentine body of the IceWings. Being incubated on a tall peak, their scales would likely have a higher contrast between night and ice, scales in shades of silvers and icy blues but not quite white.
NightWing coloration reflects the sky they hatch under, their wings mimicking the star map of the night. More undercolor shows during dusk and dawn births, but dragonets never hatch during day (and mature eggs cracked in daylight die). Undercolor is partially genetic. Foeslayer's twisted horns passed down to the dragonets, and so did her strong definition.
NightWing power scales are interesting. Scales on the corner of the eye, shaped like teardrops, indicate telepathy (right), or empathy (left), and a teardrop scale on the forehead indicates clairvoyance. Although both eye scales are present for telepathy and empathy, a dragon is not guaranteed both, and it tends to be connected to the dominant talon. The thinner the scale, the weaker the power, with a circular, aka "full moon" scale being raw power seen once in many generations (like Clearsight).
Darkstalker would likely have been a chimera of sorts, assuming animus magic is a recessive gene. He also seems to have taken after Arctic more than Whiteout did, likely getting his sharp figure, long spines, and grey eyes from Arctic. He would have been a very dark black, with weak star scales due to the sheer brightness of full moons, giving him bright grey underscales to represent the ground under bright moonlight and his IceWing heritage. His grey eyes are a mutation of blue and black eyes, the same as his animus magic. His teardrop scales would be circular, although his prophet scale is closer to a football shape. He might enchant his scales further down the line to be darker, and less triangular.
Whiteout is said to take after both parents equally, oddly enough. Not only that, but she was hatched near dawn, and this gives her body a sapphire blue coloring. I imagine her head to be white, or with white splotches, explaining why no one noticed her prophet scale. Her membranes are a silver, with dark blue speckles, a result of hybrid mutation, with Foeslayer's dominant NightWing traits of being smaller, bulkier, large ears, soft spides, twisted horns, dark eyes, and softer overall appearance. She also had thrice-moonborn powers and animus powers (a full moon prophet scale and crescent teardrops). Arctic's normalcy enchantment gave her a number of IceWing traits and too-white scales.
Welcome!
Please refer to this post before submitting phenotype related asks! Onto the introductory paragraph and main rules:
Have you ever looked at the book series Wings of Fire and wondered about the genes that cause animus magic, scale color and more?
This project, the Wings of Fire Genetics Project, aims to speculate and create genes for the book series, based on what we see in the book series itself!
This series was originally started on Comic Fury. For my own sanity I will be posting chapters here when they are fully released on the Comic Fury site. So there may be large gaps in between chapters. If you want to see pages as they release please visit the Comic Fury site!
Comic Fury is a free, easy-to-use, advertisement free host for your webcomic(s). You can put up your own comics and get a website dedicated
On Comic Fury there is something known as an Author comment that appears underneath the page, all of these comments will be copy and pasted underneath their respective comics for sake of preserving the comic.
Comics will be posted at 9:00 AM PST
CURRENT PHENOTYPE ASK STAUS: CLOSED UNTIL THE 3RD OF APRIL
Rules for this blog:
Asks are welcome, whether it is a question, or a dragon you have that you want phenotyped! Please note when phenotyping the genes that will be covered will only be the genes already posted.
You may submit an ask while they are closed, it will only get a response when asks are open again!
If you see an error, please reach out in the comments of the post containing the error, you will be credited for your help if the correction is, well, correct or relevant. Spelling and grammar corrections are welcome. This webcomic is also on Comic Fury, so corrections will have the respective logo of each site depending on where the correction was made.
Be polite! This is a single person passion project, this is solely run by @thatonetransmann .
Keep conversation generally appropriate, you never know who’ll visit this blog, especially since this is based on a kids series. Please avoid slurs, curse words, and graphic descriptions of inappropriate topics. More mature topics covered by the books are welcome to be discussed as long as graphic descriptions are avoided.
Any messages unrelated to phenotype asks will be deleted immediately, if you wish to have a question answered privately, create an ask and say you want your question responded to privately. I am willing to block people for being inappropriate in the comments or to me directly. I do not wish to do so.
Important Tags:
#chapter - this will be used for full published chapters
#[tribename]chapter - this will also be used for most chapters, to signify what tribe it is about
#[chapternumber] - chapters are sorted by numbers, the intro chapter is 0, while the Icewings intro is 1.0. The second number represents chapters within each tribe so the next chapter about Icewings would be 1.1. #[chapternumber][partnumber] - Any chapters that need to be split into 2 posts will have another number added to it. So 1.1 would become 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 and 0 would become 0.1 and 0.2 until all parts have a number assigned, so if there is only two parts the new decimal place would only go up to 2. This tag will only be on any posts split into 2 or more parts.
#ask -used for all asks
#askquestion - for asks that contains a question
#askphenotype - for asks requesting me to phenotype a dragon
#phenotypereblog - used for phenotypes that need updates from future chapters
#askother - miscellaneous asks
#announcement - used for announcements pertaining to the series
#poll - used for any polls, wether that’s onsite or hosted somewhere else.
Everything above is subject to change with time!
I hope this series is enjoyable!
Happy Pride Month!
As a part of this celebration I have made a new banned for tumblr, a new cover on Comic Fury and an edited Icon/Profile Picture. All will be shown below.
Yet again Happy Pride Month!

wouldn't it be easier to simplify/combo some of the polygenes down or do you have them all defined for a specific reason?
Hello Annon!
Yes it is true it would be much simpler to simply the polygenes, and use terms like low red, high red, and more. My reasoning for writing out every gene is thanks to a longstanding pet peeve I’ve had since I’ve begun to learn genetics, especially in cat genetics. Many sources just said something similar to ‘it’s a polygene, so treat it like a sliding scale’, which personally never sat right with me. I personally enjoy having the most amount of information possible, so I’ve chosen to give names to each gene to satisfy the part of me that wished more genetic related sources would show things like that. Also showing the individual genes allows me to say what it does in specific, like with the base color polygenes, it would’ve been much harder to explain that the dominant gene doesn’t always add more of that pigment and the one gene that is incompletely dominant without writing them out.
If anyone ever uses these genes to explain their OCs I encourage them to refer to any polygenes using terms like high red or low blue, as I’ve definitely learned in later chapters how tedious it can be to write them all out.
So simply put, yes it would make easier to simplify the polygenes, but my personal experience with learning about genetics makes me want to add that information in particular.
Howdy
Shameless plug to a secondary blog I’m running!
It has Wings of fire genetics if you’re interested in that!
The blog itself has all the context and a few chapters released already!
