my problem with sanji

the thing about sanji is that, if it weren't for other characters, I think I would be completely fine with it. not in the sense of i'd think it's funny or anything, but that it would be so much easier to brush off and take as typical exaggeration. BUT then we have characters like zoro, who is so much more of a normal guy?? like, yes, obviously im so very for "zoro is gay" but even if he wasn't i have no reason to believe he'd be as creepy as sanji. and so the fact that even before sanji's introduction, we are shown a character who is just a normal guy around women (feminist king woohoo), AND that he thinks sanji's behavior around women is stupid just really takes some of the comedy out. and yeah, i know that other strawhats have pervert gags. cobra being part of the alabasta bath scene still icks me to this day. but there is something that feels so much different with sanji than it does with brook asking for panties (and im not even counting franky as a pervert. my man just calls himself one and wears a speedo. he's a weird uncle). with brook, everything he does has this air of unseriousness (most notably the skull jokes). and i don't want to minimize brook as just being comic relief, because he's not (and his comedy is a tragedy in of itself) but he does provide a lot of the humor. part of me wonders if asking for panties is a way to still connect with when he was alive. this is kind of weird to think about but he cant really *do anything* yk? so maybe this is his way of fulfilling that specific emotional/physical need. BUT ALSO, brook doesnt discriminate. he'll ask ANYONE for their panties (and he politely turns down men who provide) and asking BIG MOM is such a hilarious power move. but sanji DOES discriminate. kokoro being the big example here. but also, there were the people on kamabakka. while it's ambiguous as to whether they're drag queens or just actually trans, he is an absolute ass to them. now, there is SOME nuance here in that it's not right for them to force him into a dress if he doesn't want to and it's also not right for them to keep coming onto him if he doesnt want it (and keep in mind, SANJI does that to the women) but being so disgusted by the concept of men in dresses is asshole behavior. period. of course, if we're talking about the okama, we're talking about yamato, trans king. first, im saying yamato is trans. wano as a whole is already intrinsically tied to gender in the narrative just by spawning shimotsuki village. but then, we have okiku, who is even more so obviously trans (because i do understand the ambiguity for yamato). i actually like the fact that yamato doesn't feel the need to reduce his breasts or anything. full respect to people who do get top surgery or do binding, but i also really like that yamato is still a man, even with his badonkers. and zoro also is canonically more stacked so-

all this to say, that yamato is a man, and yamato has tits. sanji likes the tits. that's fine. but he can't just discredit yamato's gender in the process. him liking yamato gives real heavy fetishization. and im not saying he can't have preferences or even find people he's not sexually or romantically attracted to hot. im saying he can't claim to be a ladies' man (and only a ladies' man for all ladies) while also not treating kokoro as a lady or inversely treating yamato as another lady.

and this isn't necessarily something against sanji's writing. in wano, sanji made a HUGE step forward. genuinely, him calling for help from robin is such a big positive direction for his attitude towards women. because it's not like this is written in his DNA or anything either. this is something he learned from zeff. not enough people talk about how baby sanji asked zeff why he didnt just also kick women to teach. his misogyny and chauvinism is a learned behavior. it just all makes him a much more interesting character and i'm all for exploring his character flaws. justifying sanji's behavior makes him more unlikeable to me. there's a difference between a character having flaws and a character just being evil. and there's a bunch of shades in between. doflamingo is a morally irredeemable person. he is also deeply traumatized. then there's the differences between jinbe and arlong. one piece is filled with nuanced characters and you're only doing a disservice to the world and its characters by avoiding the faults.

Imagine all 9 mercenaries being invited to some "integration class"

They all wear white and on the floor there are few buckets of colorful paint

Their task is to create some unique shirts by touch. They all dip their palms in paint and hug each other... Of course tickles also occur, so the shirts come out super bold and colorful.

The question is, how would they do? (A small scenario that they finger paint over each other, doing smiley faces, trees and butterflies that tickle like hell)

Mercs tickling each other for bonding's sake so peak actually. Sry for getting around to this ask only now, I've been sleeping for the last 7 days trustttt

Scout: Immediately on high alert because his lee ass can sense tickle situationship incoming from a mile away. You know, like when you're in the tickle community irl and see a seemingly normal situation and can sense this will or at least can end in tickles. And even excluding tickles... hugs? Well, okay, he wants those an embarassing amount, but won't admit it so he kinda just stays there, frozen wondering what the freak to do. But then Heavy comes to hug him and it's normal at first so he kinda relaxes but then tickles happen and he's in pure tickle panic mode but DAMN does he want to get targeted. In short: he's frozen in spot and red

Soldier: Would at first argue that he is NOT doing something like that, he thought that they would be fighting or shooting someone, not finger-painting. Buuut he's quite quickly swayed to engage in it once he sees the potential to harass compete with others. Especially with tickles but not only. If someone dares to tickle him he takes revenge as soon as possible so the others pair up to dominate him like Demo and Heavy or Medic and Pyro

Pyro: Arguably the most enthusiastic of the mercs since both of their favourite things are there: painting and potential tickles. Maybe the first mercenary who turns this whole class into a giant tickle fight because they're the first ones who even actually tries what they're supposed to be doing. In short: happy to hug and tickle and happy to get hugged and tickled back. They're also the ones who sorta force the more reluctant mercs to actually stay but more about that in those mercs' sections

Demoman: Well, that ain't what he expected today, but sure. Why not. He's already an affectionate (and drunk) guy, if they want him to go around hugging people and painting on them and letting them paint on him then sure. But since he has little self-control (again, he drunk) he giggles as soon as someone traces his tickle spot, especially considering they're supposed to draw on their shirts that cover their torso and his torso is ticklish lots. As soon as his brain registers that there are tickles in this situation he's more than happy to go around tickling others and inevitably getting tickled himself. Naturally, his go-to is Soldier who he knows he can have a proper (colorful) tickle fight with

Heavy: On one hand he thinks this is ridiculous, he could be spending his time in so many different ways. On the other... it is kinda hilarious in its own way. And hey, hugging's nice if he's in the right mood, painting's okay too. And then the tickling starts and he eagerly joins, at first as a pure ler but eventually Medic gets to painting on him and of course is all too eager to tickle Heavy. Once the ice is broken a few others try their luck tickling Heavy as well, namely Demo, Soldier and Pyro. Well, Pyro didn't need all that much convincing but still. Oh, and maybe Engie too :3

Engineer: One of the more hesitant ones but Pyro gets him to engage by quickly and ethusiastically getting to hugging him and drawing on him a bit. Engie squirms a little but he reckons it's not too bad. So yeah, he engages just enough. Whatever, he might as well. And then someone turns the "integration class" into a big tickle fight and the biggest switch mood hits him. Still, he knows he's in freaking danger so he quickly finds another merc like Demo to tickle with those drawings so he's not targetted. But then he lowkey wants to be tickled himself so while he goes around tickling others he's not exactly doing his best to stop others form getting to tickling him either

Medic: Just like Scout he immediately sees tickly potential. If Pyro's not the first one to start the tickling then he does because he's not even pretending. He attaches himself to the closest teammate, hugs them "nicely" and then very clearly starts tickling them with his paint-covered fingers while of course insisting he's just doing what they were supposed to do, hugging and painting :). And hey, if they want to take revenge (and some of them do want it) he's more than happy about it and frankly they know it too. As stated earlier, Heavy is one of his first victims

Sniper: ...Is this what they're doing now? Fine, he guesses. He spends the first moments drawings a few things on others' shirts lazily, not really putting that much effort into it but he might as well do it for a few minutes and then hopefully descretely dip. But then as he's painting what's supposed to be a flower on one merc's ribs, let's go with Engie, that man snickers and Sniper's like "Oh. ...Oh." He kinda gets into it but tries not to show it too much because he does not want himself getting tickled, especially with all of them there. Tough luck because sooner or later another mercenary gets to drawing on him and he's too ticklish not to react and well- the rest you can probably imagine. Oh, and of course he tries to not get hugged either, if you must draw on him then whatever (that's before he gets tickled), you don't gotta hug him for that

Spy: Are you kidding him? His ass in not doing this. But as soon as Pyro sees him trying to leave or just kinda stay in the corner and wait it out they get to him and destroy him with hugs and tickles and Spy is shrieking. And then a few others join in harassing him with tickles. So to fight them off he does the one thing he knows will work - tickles them if they get too close. He's not exactly the most... artistic or huggy about this endeavor, but he sure does make others laugh
