part five: the infernal devices characters
back to the homepage
I love shadowhunters, but it’s insistence that romantic love is the greatest thing on planet earth that every human must achieve is getting a little ridiculous
Magnus saying Woolsey “[has] no heart at all” (page 123 of clockwork Princess) simply because he doesn’t care for romantic relationships and prefers to have sex is awful. And yes, I’m aware it’s 1878 so romantic love was absolutely seen as the object of success at the time so this isn’t a bashing of Magnus, but this theme is prevalent in majority of the shadowhunter series and this quote just reminded me of that problem
And yes, I know there are parabatai, but that is the only exception, anyone who doesn’t have one gets paired off with maybe one or two exceptions that I can’t think of, especially if they’re shadowhunters. And even then we have Emma and Julian which kind of creates an incoherence with the parabatai idea that platonic love is equal. Their passionate friendship causes no problem but the second they get romantic its much too strong and elevated that the bond starts destroying them.
Every single major character in TID has been paired (I feel kind of randomly and somewhat insta-lovey. I can already tell Gabriel and Cecily is going to be a thing because he looked at her once and ‘fell in love’ with no real bonding, chemistry, or even a conversation having happened) and same goes for the other series. And I personally think that ccs portrayal of familial relationships (Ty and Livvy mainly come to mind) are so much more beautifully done and way more grounded and connected than when romance is forced on these characters who hardly know each other and truly have no arc that requires romance
Yes there are the contextual explanations, but the narrative doesn’t seem to try so hard to disagree with Magnus’ statement across all of tsc. Again, I’m aware that Shadowhunters is largely a romance series, but that doesn’t mean that every single character has to find romance. In fact, it makes it boring, shallow, and predictable. I am glad that Jem and Will defy that narrative a lot, I just wish there were more instances because I can’t think of any other that really have that burning, passionate, larger than life love that equals the portrayals of the romances and let’s it stay that way
Anyways, long winded way to say I love Woolsey Scott and aromantic people exist and have beautiful hearts with the same capacity and passion that anyone else may have
Back-to-back aromantic Woolsey and polyamorous Tessa. Happy pride from Clockwork Princess
