Finished my Comic Book Essay!

in a book full of jokes and snark about all of DC, pretty much, this is a classic.

Dave Gibbons perfectly captures the look of an earlier era, although the events he depicts are a little less wholesome than the books of that period, as Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk cause even more chaos than usual, resulting in death and destruction for everyone they meet. As Superman’s supporting cast die out, we see this brief scene of Jimmy and Perry in Heaven, and the Daily Planet editor comes face to face with the being whose name he would exclaim with annoying regularity. And it looks like Caesar, great or otherwise, is about as sick of having his name blurted out as he could possibly be...

Favorite example of a fight between high level reality warpers?

I don’t know that it quite qualifies, but the game between Morpheus and Choronzon is what immediately comes to mind. Also, of course, the entirety of World’s Funnest.

There’s no shortage of artistic homages in this story, as the troublesome duo of Bat-Mite and Mr Mxyzptlk move between realities/eras of comic history, but Mazzucchelli’s Fourth World/Kirby section is definitely one of my favourites. Successfully capturing the Kirby look, Krackle and all, while also successfully folding in the more cartoonish elements of the two imps, is perhaps not the easiest of things to do. It all leads to this excellent joke where Darkseid finally gets his hands on the Anti-Life equation that he was after all through the Kirby books and beyond.

For all the effort the leader of Apokolips put into his quest for Anti-Life, the equation is a lot simpler than I had believed. And a lot more destructive..
