I just want to share a realization I had while going through the Legend of Soulcalibur artbook. This occurred to me while going through the pages on Xianghua’s backstory.

Below is an excerpt from page 29. Roughly, it translates to “Xianghua’s connection with the three treasures, including the sword Krita-Yuga*, traces back to the maidenhood of her mother Xiangfei.”

Near the lower left corner is the furigana (small katakana) indicating the pronunciation of her mother’s name. The character used for her family name Chai is 柴; it turns out in Japanese, it’s pronounced “shiba”.

And I’ve only seen Xiba’s name in katakana: シバ.

That kid’s name was a pun all along!

*I used the localized name here because it would be unrecognizable otherwise. The sword’s name in Japanese is Gouhouken (護法剣), which can be literally translated as something like “demon-dispelling sword” or “sword in defense of Buddhist doctrine”. The other two treasures, Dvapara-Yuga mirror and Kali-Yuga rod, are called the Mappoukyou (末法鏡) and the Meppoukon (滅法棍) respectively. While the English localization opted for names from the Hindu cycle of ages, in Japanese only the mirror is named after one of the three Buddhist ages: the Latter Day of the Dharma (Mappou). I’m just gonna end this tangent here. I’m just a geek with a rudimentary understanding (at best) of either religion.

Soul Calibur 5 - Xiba:

"Here's the child of Kilik & Xianghua, and he resembles his father. He's rocking a very similar moveset & weapon but I gotta say... I actually like him a lot more than Kilik...yeah. I've admited before that I'm not the biggest fan of Kilik. He's not a bad character at all, but I just don't care much for him. Xiba improved a lot on his father's moveset to the point that I find him a lot more fun than before. Really like some of the combo potential and attacks. Sadly, that's all the nice things I have to say about him. His personality and design are so forgettable. Just a "quirky" version of his dad."
