A breakdown on PINK and it's religious symbolism
When I listened to Envy from PINK for the first time, I thought to myself "what the fuck is going on??". I couldn't make out any words besides "please forgive me" and "upside, upside down" (although that's not backwards... 👀) but who exactly is James asking to forgive him?
Throughout msi, there has always been a theme that stays within the music, promotional pieces of work (posters. ect), CD booklets, photoshoots and and music videos, maybe even appearing as subliminal messages. And that theme is religion.
James has shared he grew up in a Catholic school, despite hating it. From the euringer song "two and a half years", at the end we hear quite a bit of Spanish, some of it being unintelligible, but what we can work out sounds to be some sort of a "message" to God. We know that James's mother speaks Spanish, therefore James has to know quite a bit, right? Just before the Spanish begins, we hear what seems to be this:
Someone talking, potentially his father. By what I can infer from the sounds added, it sounds as if they're having a conversation, but James gets annoyed with what his dad is saying, so he gets up and leaves. Next we hear him get into a car (?) and drive somewhere, arriving at and entering a building that seems to be filled with people - this is when the Spanish starts. Although it doesn't sound like James, it could still be from his perspective. He might be at a church?
We know that James's parents, specifically his mother, never really believed in him and msi, and her saying he'll "never get onto MTV" or that "no-one wants to watch a grown man prance around in a pink suit" (translated from the Spanish verses in Mark David Chapman) and although right now, this doesn't really pose any importance in this theory besides another very important thing that, again, keeps reappearing in James's music. Spanish.
In Spain, Catholicism is very prominent, being their most followed religion, so from this, we can guess that James's mother is highly religious, maybe even bringing up James and his brother, Marcus, as religious, seeing as James (and presumably Marcus) were put into a catholic school.
In the song 5TR82H311 and Darling Young Boyz, the theme of homosexuality is most prominent, being a reoccurring theme in a lot of songs, with these 2 being the main example. 5TR82H311 might represent James's homosexuality and his realisation of his romantic liking of men. Here, we circle back to the point of him being raised catholic. This song contains the lyrics
"I'm going straight to hell
For the things I do,
I'm going straight to hell
For how I think of you"
Being raised catholic, he was also most likely raised believing that being gay was "wrong" and that you'd go hell. The lyrics "for how I think of you" could suggest James having erotic thoughts about men, but wanting to suppress them as to not go to hell.
I mean that's all there really is to it for now, I'll make a part two soon (never probably) but I'll see. Also please keep in mind that I might update this specific post after a while, I write my theories at school and when I'm bored so idk exactly when I will but I probably will.
Thank you for coming to my very important meeting
