Yuki stared down at the unconscious vampire at her feet.

Birds chirped in the park around them, eagerly flitting about in the last of the sunlight.

She blinked down at him. He on the other hand, blinked at nothing. Completely out. Out cold. Very unconscious. His silver hair fanned dramatically across the grass where he’d fallen. Like a bad album cover.

She snorted.

Then she dropped her head into her hands and sighed. She hadn’t thought this through. What was she going to do now? What was she going to do with him?

She peeked through her fingers and yup, he was still there. He wasn’t sand or dust so he was definitely still alive, she hadn’t accidentally killed him. That’s what it would have been too, an accident. After watching him help that kid she was so sure the Association had made a mistake. There was no way that he was a vampire. But his looks were so distinct that she had to double check.

That swing she’d just done to the side of his head, y’know the one that had him flop over the railing of the bench and into the grass unconscious had been a panic response.

She nudged him with the toe of her boot.

Nothing.

She crouched down, shaking him a little.

“Hey,” she tried, not actually expecting him to wake up.

Yuki glanced around the park. No one had been nearby when she’d approached him, she’d made sure of that. No need to endanger people when going after a vampire. Now though a couple walked a dog in the distance. This was a popular park after all.

They needed to leave.

She grabbed him under the arms and tried to haul him upright.

He did not move.

“What,” she grit out, bracing her feet to try again, “do you eat, rocks?”

Bloody rocks.

She got him halfway upright before his full weight slumped forward, nearly taking her down with him. She gasped, wrapping her arms around his waist to stop him from falling back to the ground. There was no way she’d be able to get him back up again.

Now she was awkwardly hugging a vampire in the middle of a very public park at nine p.m.

This was bad.

Beyond bad.

Someone was going to see them, notice his sluggishly bleeding head wound and call the cops on her. She needed to leave and she could not leave him here. He would wake up and wander off to kill some innocent family. They’d know it was her, his very obvious appearance was listed in her orders! Her father would give her That Look.

Absolutely not.

“Okay, buddy,” she whispered, breathless, adjusting her grip under his arm. “You’re coming home with me.”

She tried again, dragging him backward a few inches across the grass. They’d moved but she already had to take a break, her muscles screaming in protest.

Okay, let’s try something else.

She straightened a bit, carefully pulling his arm over her shoulders without dropping him. His weight slumped against her, but she tried a few steps forward. That was much better. They were making progress and this way it would be harder to drop him. Still sucked though.

A middle aged man in a suit stared at them as he walked past.

“Too much to drink,” Yuki laughed awkwardly. “College boys, amirite?”

Suit man raised his eyebrows but thankfully said nothing and just kept walking. Not his business, clearly.

The vampire groaned quietly in her ear.

Yuki nearly screamed, her heart hammering. She hadn’t been expecting him to make any noise.

“Shhh,” she muttered through clenched teeth, slowing dragging them out of the park. “You don’t get to complain right now.”
