Your head throbs as you walk to your girlfriend's house, body still aching from the hits you took earlier, your muscles ache in protest as you try to move your body around. You felt another wave of nausea coming in. Fucking hell, you should've at least protected your stomach.
Your phone pings in your pocket, you open it and see notifications from the each of them. Your heart drops to your stomach.
Fifty unread messages.
Twenty missed calls.
Six missed video calls.
You curse under your breath, running a sore hand through your sweaty hair—how were you supposed to explain that you got into another fight? You barely survived the last time they scolded you.
You open your group chat and type out a message.
Will be there in a minute or two.
You were seriously screwed. Fucked up even.
When you finally reach the door to Ashlyn's house, you take a deep breath and knock. Much to your surprise it was Ashlyn's mom.
"They're in the graveyard if you need them." She smiles at you, realization kicks in. Of course they are, how stupid of you. You nod your head, which throbs in response.
You now tread carefully to the open graveyard, one, because Ashlyn had supersonic hearing, two, you didn't want to get caught—at least not yet.
Hiding three buses away from, you listen in on the bits of conversation you can just make out.
"Damn this, she's not responding!" Tyler shouts, exasperated—you open you phone and see a notification from him.
Where are you?
You hear them talking among themselves in soft, hushed tones. You made them worry. A pit began to form in your stomach.
'Get your shit together, if you're the problem—then fix it.' You think to yourself, pressing your eyelids tightly together.
Coming out of your hiding spot, trying to act casual—you wave at them with a slight smile on your face. "Hey you guys!" You beam, keeping up a brave face. "Am I interrupting somethin' here?" You were hoping for anger, or dramatics, or anything else really. Instead the tension got thicker, everyone stayed silent, their eyes piercing through you.
A moment passed, then another—before Ashlyn finally perked up.
"You and I are gonna have to talk." She walked toward you, grabbing the back of your hoodie, "you guys can start to strategize—we'll be back soon." She said, looking back at the others as she dragged you somewhere.
"Wha- Hey! Let go! Can't you be more civil about this?" You protest, managing to turn your body forward. Ashlyn glared at you, and you didn't say no more. You noticed that her ginger hair wasn't in her usual two braids.
She opened the door to a bus and gestured you to go in, finally letting go of you. You let out a tsk before finally going inside.
"This feels like a hostage situation." You mutter under your breath, finally sitting down at the back of the bus. Ashlyn swiftly followed.
"Let me see your arms."
"My what?"
"Your arms, let me see them."
You hesitate, but finally give in—rolling up the sleeves of the hoodie, careful not to touch the bruises on them. Speaking of which, they came to be a lovely purple. You hum, admiring it's beauty. You look up and see that Ashlyn was not quite fond of them as you were.
She pinched the bridge of her nose, "we told you to stop picking up street fights. We don't need anyone getting injured. What happens if you didn't win, huh? What would you do? We told you to stop, so many times—and you don't even heed our warning!" Her words bit back at you, anger slowly laced her voice, she grit her teeth to restrain it. You could almost feel the tension between you two growing.
Saying sorry is futile, saying that you won't do it again is absurd. You attempt to form a reasonable response but nothing comes to mind. So you stay quiet, keeping your head low, taking it all in—preparing yourself for the worse.
Seeing your silence, she continued to rage at you. "That's your problem, when you get in trouble—you stay quiet and take it all in, once it's done, you go on and ignore all that we've said! It's as if you don't even care! You wanna work as a team? Then go fix yourself first!" Ashlyn finally shouts. Every word felt like a punch, every sentence felt like stab to the back.
Ashlyn took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, locking your eyes with hers. Deep emerald eyes boring onto yours.
"Why don't you leave me then?" You then say, raising a brow at her. "And I don't want some bullshit that you love me. I already know that."
Silence passed through the both of you before she eventually spoke up. "Because I care. And because your my friend." Ashlyn finally says, sitting next to you. The strain between you two slowly disappeared. She took your arm gently, and took a good look at it before standing up.
"I'll go explain the situation and get Ben." Ashlyn turned her back on you, going to leave. But before she did, she poked her head back.
"Just one more thing, your stupidity will probably kill you sooner or later." Then she goes off.
You shrug. "Just be there when I do."
