Anybody knows how Stairway to Lenin was filmed?
By Zbigniew Rybczynski, it's from his short The Orchestra, the last part. The bolero part. I can't find it anywhere.
THE ORCHESTRA
Mozart - Piano Concerto No. 21 in C major, K.467 - Andante
Chopin - Sonata per pianoforte n. 2 op. 35
Albinoni - Adagio for violin, strings and organ continuo in G minor
Rossini - La Gazzaladra - Ouverture
Schubert - Ave Maria
Ravel - Bolero
Media, a short film by Zbigniew Rybczynski (Zbig to his friends), is one of my favorites. For the last eight or so years, I've kept a copy of it on DVD, burned for me by one of my favorite professors, Tad Beck.
Zbig would go on to win numerous awards in the field of visual effects and help pioneer blue and green screen compositing technology. He also won the 1982 Oscar for best animated short for Tango, which is bananas.
Media, however, was made back in 1980 and shot on 35mm. To imagine the staggering amount of work that went into compositing this by hand is mind blowing.

Read up on Zbig. Then, check out some of his experiments with film pre-digi era.
