Thinking about Donnie saving his brothers and getting turned into a Zombie but because of his Mutant Status and Big Brains, the Zombie Virus doesn’t affect him like it affects anyone else. He’s significantly changed into a husk of himself and does have the urge to assault all people like the rest of them. EXCEPT he’s not aggressive at all towards his brothers because some part deep, deep, deep in his memories knows who they are and understands that What He Is is not something that he or they want them to be.

And his brothers can’t bear to kill him so they try to ditch him but he follows behind them like a lost puppy who continually manages to locate them again and again. Eventually they stop avoiding him and start taking him places, training him to eat animals instead of people and getting offended when refugee centers won’t let their emotional support brother in because he’s trained! He’s a good boy!!

And, oh dear, it turns out the way that Donnie’s body and brain is affected by the mutagen makes it so that the virus is in a constant state of battle, which means he has antibodies (of sorts) to fight it off and when word spreads people want to dissect him to alter it and make a cure or vaccine to save the rest of human race.

His brothers aren’t too happy about dissection since the scientists didn’t leave out the part where he’s technically still able to be saved.

Donnie doesn’t really know what’s happening or comprehend that he’s in danger he just hangs out and snarls at the Not Brother people if his brothers aren’t around. Yes this includes April and Casey. They are not friends they are food that Donnie will eat if his brothers will ever relent on their deserve to preserve them.

Donnie isn't a zombie anymore, but nobody can be a zombie for as long as he has and not deal with the side effects. His brothers know about most of them. Donnie doesn't understand some others.

The metal door is huge.

When he sits down in front of it, it's even bigger.

That’s pretty cool. Not entirely interesting, but the new fact is noted in the back of his mind as he folds his legs under him and stares at the door. He’d already tried to open it, but it didn’t budge. So, he has to wait for what was on the other side to open it and come back to him.

He sits and he waits. And he sits and he waits. And he waits some more because he’s stuck on this side and he can’t keep going.

He itches to keep going.

“What are you doing?”

He looks over his shoulder.

White face, clothes, five fingers, black hair- Casey?

He smiles, “Hi.”

Casey moves closer, arms crossed, looking curiously at the door. “Where are the others? Why are you alone?”

“Mm,” He looks at the door. “I’m not alone.”

Casey looks around contemplatively. Then he frowns, “They wouldn’t have just left you here…”

“I wasn’t left,” He reassures quickly. “I came here.”

“Why?”

He gestures to the door.

“…Right,” Casey walks over to crouch next to him. There’s a badge on his shirt. His voice is softer. “You shouldn’t be here. You want to come with me? I’ll bring you somewhere safer.”

He furrows his brows, “This isn’t safe?”

“No,”

“But…” He looks at the door. If it isn’t safe, that's more reason for him to stay. “Then I have to wait.”

“Nothing’s able to get in. I don’t even know how you got past the inner gate. The guards should-”

“I took care of them.”

They stare at each other.

Helpful, Donnie adds, "They were in the way. They had weapons."

"And... What did you do with them?"

"I moved them."

"Uh-huh..."

"Should I show you?"

"Maybe."

Donnie goes back to looking at the door.

Casey finally warns, “We need to get out of here before they find out it was you.”

“Because I punched them?”

“Because you punched them. And they're not going to be too happy about that.”

He gets to his feet, and Casey stands. “Just follow my lead.”

He nods and follows Casey away from the door. They go back to the gray walls and closed doors, and the walk is a bit hazy, but he remembers to follow, and he remembers Casey, and he wonders what it is that he’s forgetting, because he thinks that Casey forgot something.

It's on the tip of his tongue. The more he stares at him, the more certain he is that he's doesn't- there isn't-

“We’re almost there.” Casey says. “Just remember-”

“Doc!”

He watches him come to a dead stop.

There’s someone leaning against the corner, grinning with a blade in hand. White face, torn clothes, five fingers, black hair, skull mask- skull mask- Casey!

Donnie grins in recognition.

“Sorry, Doc.” Casey walks over to him and- Doc? “Just wanted to catch you real quick and ask where you’re taking my bud here.” Something in Casey's gaze softens when he meets his eyes and then sharpens again when he looks at Doc. “His brothers are looking for him, you know. Ready to tear the place down.”

“He’d knocked out guards at the entrance,” Doc says sternly. His smile faulters. Is he in trouble? “His brothers should be keeping a better eye on him.”

“Thaaat doesn’t answer my question.” Casey hands him the skull mask when he reaches for it. “Still looking for that answer.”

“I was taking him to his brothers.”

“Guess you got a little turned around. Looks to me like you were making your way to the labs.”

“Labs?” He asks, interested, “Are we working?”

“Maybe later, Don.” Casey pats his arm. There’s still a blade in his hand. Doc hasn't stopped eyeing it. Maybe he should put that away. “The Doc had an excellent idea. Let’s head back to your bros. Let them know where you are.”

“Okay,” He agrees, letting himself be led by their friend. They leave Doc standing in the hallway. He looks upset, so he’s grateful that they got out of there. Then they hear yelling, and he gives Casey a nervous look, but Casey gently takes his arm and tugs him forward.

“-ot playing game here. If you know anything abo-”

“Donnie!”

Donnie lights up as Mikey runs for him. He’s scooped up into a hug, feet briefly leaving the ground before he’s set down, and then Mikey is frantically looking him over. Raph’s holding a guy by his shirt, and he throws him to join the both of them.

“No needle marks, no incisions, no news scars, or-”

“I don’t think they took him,” Casey admits as Mikey runs a hand along his arm. “Look at his eyes.” Mikey grabs his face, squishing his cheeks. He bats the hands away as Casey continues, “Found Doc walking him to the lab. Said he knocked some guards out by the gate.”

“Donnie did?” Raph demands, placing a hand on Donnie’s forehead and forcing it higher so he can look at his eyes. Donnie drops the mask to shove him away, snapping, “Would you leave me alone?”

“Do you know who I am? Why were you knocking people out?”

“You’re-” He tries to put an exact word on it. He comes up with nothing. The guy that Raph dropped is running down the hall. “I know who you are. And they grabbed me.”

“Of course they grabbed you. You’re not supposed to be over there.”

"I needed to be." He shoots back. "I wasn't going to let them stop me."

“No, you’re not. And you’re supposed to stay with us so those creeps can’t have their way wi-”

“Raph,” Mikey says quickly. “I don’t think he’s remembering.”

Raph goes quiet. Donnie looks between them, offended, “Remembering what? I’m remembering plenty. I know who you are!”

“What’s my name?" Mikey asks. Donnie opens his mouth, determined to answer, but it slips out of reach. “You’re… But I know you're my…”

He looks at Casey, pleading, “You said it earlier. You said the word. You said they were looking for me.”

“Your brothers.”

“Casey…”

“My brothers!” He whirls to Mikey. “I know that! I know who you are! I am remembering! I am!”

“Okay, okay,” Mikey agrees quickly. “You remembering. That’s my bad.”

“I’m remembering,” Donnie insists at his brothers exchange a look. His heart starts racing. Don't they believe him? He recognized them immediately! He knows! "I know who you are! I do!"

"Sorry, I'm sorry." Mikey says with a quick smile. "I shouldn't have doubted you bro. I was spooked 'cause you ran off. Got my nerves on edge."

The panic starts to ebb. "Oh. Yeah."

Casey reports, "I'm going to tell April things are all good here."

"Sounds good, Casey."

Raph turns back to Donnie as he starts to walk off. There's something on the floor at his feet. He picks it up, fiddling with the edges. Good craftsmanship. "Don, why did you go to the gate?"

"Gate," He considers that. "I went to the door. I couldn't open it."

"He tried to open it." Mikey's voice is high. "Raph, he tried to-"

"I know." Raph snaps. "Donnie, forget the door, forget the gate- if you remember one thing, stay with us, okay? Your brothers."

He frowns, "But I was."

"With us, Donnie. Beside us."

Raph's squeezing his shoulders. His hands are really big. Were they always that big? "You can't run off."

Donnie doesn't like the look in his eyes.

"With you. I'll remember."

Raph looks like he's debating saying something. He looks at Mikey, and asks, "Can you bring him to the room? I'll go wait for Leo to get back. Fill him in."

"Still think him hunting is a bad idea," Mikey snips back; a little brother who's verdict has been ignored. Raph rolls his eyes, "Fresh meat is fresh meat. Donnie needs some meat on those bones. Now get!"

He shoos them away, so Donnie follows Mikey through the halls and past doors. His little brother glares at the people they pass. It's a weird look to see on his face. They reach the door, and Donnie realizes that he's still holding a mask in his hands.

Mikey looks at him as he looks around. After a moment, he asks, "Think I picked this up somewhere. Any idea who this belongs too?"

Thinking about how Donnie is covered in scars. Thinking about him coming to life looking like he's been through some unruly torment, bruised and battered and dealing with old injuries that he brought upon himself. Thinking about all the injuries that could have been prevented but his brothers didn't bother- how they slowly became less and less concerned with preventing the self-harm. Thinking about how they let this happen and now they have to deal with it, every flinch of pain, every time he favors one limb over the other, every question about where did this come from that they could have protected him from. Not a matter of couldn't but didn't.

It was always a choice. One that Donnie has to live with.

Lil question about your zombie Dee au

How does Donie become unzombified? The last thing you posted about it they were in somewhere. Is that a shelter? Why did the doctor want to take Donie?

Okay okay okay, I think I briefly mentioned a bunch of important facts about this "non-canon" future of the ZomDee AU in a bunch of different Asks, so I'll try to summarize and cite them for you.

So this is the very first mention that I made about this AU, and I told ya'll in it that there are still humans in existence.

I'd imagine that if the world starts falling apart, the government will stick the smartest of the smart in a safe area in the hopes of them creating a fix to it. Unfortunately, they do not end up getting anywhere for years and years- until they learn of a group of survivors traveling with a tame zombie. And a tame zombie shouldn't be possible.

They latch onto his existence and manage to convince his brothers to come with them to a safe, protected area. All they want from them is permission to run tests on their zombie.

The brother who's dead. No big deal right?

They accept because it would be nice to have somewhere to rest for a few days that didn't require constant fear. That's where they are in the Gate clip. In this very protected 'shelter' run by humans.

And the humans are very pleased when they get their hands on Donnie and discover that he could be the key to preventing the spread of the virus. And they explain to his brothers that they want to take him apart and do a full exploration on how the virus affects the body.

And that... does not sound like a small deal.

As I mention when I answered these questions, they're pretty hesitant about their brother getting sliced up. He might be a zombie, but he was their brother. Seems like a little... Much. And the scientists explain that he's in the mid-stages of transformation, which is completely unheard of considering how long it's been since he got bitten. The sooner that they can get inside him, the more likely it is that they can find a way to prevent the transformation process. Plus, the added bonus of getting to see what's going on in the body! Cool, right?

And Leo and Raph are a little more comfortable with the idea of getting a prevention to keep them all safe and getting rid of their ZomDee (who is mostly just a burden) stalker/human killer (might be worth it), but Mikey (resident zombie expert in their small group) is like "hold on, hold on, he's mid-transformation? So he's not fully zombie?" and they're dismissively like 'well yeah he's kind of still alive but not really-"

And that's when the scientists completely lose their blessing because "HE'S STILL ALIVE?! AND YOU WANT TO CUT HIM UP?!"

Big mistake on their part.

When the turtles find out that they can 'technically' do what they need to without vivisection, they put their feet down. They make a deal- they can continue to experiment on Donnie, but only with the end goal of trying to help him. So, the scientists create an experimental prevention and- after Mikey makes 'necessary alterations' to it (dunking extra mutagen in it), they use it on Donnie.

Once the virus is unable to keep fighting, mutant nonsense takes place and Donnie reverts back a bit- He's not fully himself, but he's not a zombie anymore. He's lost and confused and pained and has a million chronic issues, but he's back.

And once Donnie's back, the turtles refuse to let the scientists put their grubby plastic gloves on him anymore. Which causes a lot of tension. They aren't kicked out because the scientists don't want to risk losing track of Donnie, and the brothers don't leave because Donnie's in no state to go deal with the kind of dangers that exist out there.

They already lost him once. They won't risk it again, not so soon.

The "Doc" is one of the scientists that greet the small group when they first arrived. Their interactions were always friendly, and they genuinely trusted his advice and input. Then he turned out to be one of the biggest supporters for the 'cut Donnie up' movement, and he even tried to separate them from ZomDee at one point to go through with it without their consent. That goes... Very not well.

When he saw Donnie sitting by the gate, he thought it was an opportunity to take advantage of. I doubt he planned on attempting another vivisection, but he definitely was going to see what he could get away with. Hence why Mikey was checking for needle marks.
