today's Fifth Acre work: sheet mulching!

I have decided to sheet mulch as well as sieve the stones and broken glass, rusty nails, and general trash from the top soil before I start compost application and soil amendment. The rest of the weeds (filaree, ugh) can be pulled with about six hours of work, and then I'll have two plots. Terrace West will be a three sisters based garden with some others like chard, kale, eggplant, tomatoes, and peppers. Terrace Center will have sunflowers, cucumbers, cantaloupe, and nightshades. Terrace East is already planted with potatoes and alliums, and Terrace Top has some potatoes, thornless blackberries, and a raspberry that decided it ain'tn't dead yet.

I found some volunteers while working: a pansy by the compost over in Terrace East, and some Eschscholzia poppies at the edge of Terrace West and the shrine garden.

DIY Swampy Planter for Tropical Gardening 🌱🌱🌱🌱 I haven't seen much on how to plant taro for an arid climate, so I wanted to make a post about it, since what I'm doing seems to be working. It's really hard wanting tropical fruits and vegetables to grow here, and not knowing how to do that. I'm behind the coastal mountains, so we don't get any humidity where I am, and it's a valley, so it gets cool at night. (Hence, the reason why I stress the importance of insulating this planter box.) 🤞 I'm hoping my new method will make a successful harvest, because this sprout looks so promising, getting bigger each day. And even if it doesn't make many tubers of taro, the leaves will still be edible! ((All edible taro must be cooked thoroughly!)) 🌿🌿🌿🌿

WORST NEWS

I just had an accident and fucking dropped all but one pot of my tomato seedling literally can save any of the ones I dropped the stems are bent and I’m going to have to start over but the last frost is 1-3 weeks away and it’s like I’m not even going to have time for them to grow anymore. I’m so heartbroken bc I feel so stupid about what happened :(

The only pot that survived was the brandywine, lost the Abe Lincoln, San marzano, and black krim. I would have to restart the seeds but the frost date is in like 2-3 weeks, can anyone offer some advice whether there’s enough time to even do that? I’m just really sad

earlier this year i went to festival here in texas that was handing out free bluebonnett seeds. im gonna plant them later on this week. if the survive and bloom in march im going to be in heaven
