On No.6 and resistance
A theme that stuck out to me on my recent reread of the No.6 manga was that the best way to combat militaristic authoritarianism is to stay in touch with your culture and the arts. Those are what what makes being human unique, and what colonialism seeks to eradicate to create mindless homogeny.
The act that began the fall of No.6 was Nezumi’s singing and spirituality. Those are the very same things that the leaders of No.6 attempted to steal and distort to use for their own gain as a method of control, but because it was false, it held no real power over the people.
Also, it may sound cheesy, but revolution is not achieved as a solo act. Nezumi would’ve never been able to destroy No.6 on his own. But because he had connections to others and refused to forget or suppress his culture, he was able to succeed.
