Just your basic introductory post for this blog. I love Cassandra as a character because she is so complex and tragic, so donāt be surprised if you find that a lot of posts on this blog relate to her. Iāll try to throw in some general Tangled posts or reblogs, but I make no promises.
Also, if you see a comment from @riverxdoctorforever, thatās my main blog. I try to put @tangled-the-series-forever at the bottom to show that itās me, but sometimes I forget. Anyways, hope youāre having a fantastic day wherever you happen to be in the world!
I think whatās hard about the artbook thing is that this is such a cool piece to be released to the fandom and it feels like Cass fans have been ostracised from that. They get to see other fans get excited that their favourite character has cool concept art but they donāt get that experience :(
So one day I was singing along to āIāve Got Thisā while thinking about Cass (as I typically do) when it hit me:
That thread of āIāve got thisā is a very Cass-like line. She prefers to work alone and be independent. Thereās multiple times where she tries to handle things on her own because sheās determined to prove others wrong or just simply prove herself to others. In any case, her response is the same: āIāve got this.ā
So, thatās how this song came about. I enjoyed rewriting Iād Give Anything to include her perspective (see here) plus writing my own original song called Plus Est En Vous. Without further ado, hereās Iāve Got This (Cassā version)!
p.s. this took me almost two whole years to write since I started it then forget about it š also, itās Cassā perspective throughout the series as a whole (up until the start of Season 3)

I have 13 other blogs, half of them centered around a specific ship from various fandoms (Doctor Who, Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts, Frozen). That moment when youāre singing āNothing Left to Loseā and thinking, āWow, I wish I read that book (The Turning of the Screw) so I would know if this line of the song is an allusion to the bookās plot or theme.ā
Thatās when it hits me.
Itās Taming of the Shrew, not Turning of the Screw.
So I love to analyze song lyrics and while I was listening to this heart-wrenching tune, I thought about the back and forth part between Varian and Cass. Hereās the lyrics in case you need a refresher (Cassā part is in parenthesis):

You've lost your grip and lost your mind (I'm not gonna lose)
All's not lost, don't be so blind (I refuse)
Cut your losses, drop the IOUs (I refuse)
Ooh, choose!
When Cass sings āloseā, what exactly is she refusing to lose? Her grip and her mind? Losing to Rapunzel just like sheās done all her life? All of the above?
I think itās during this song that Cass really allows her insecurities to drive her decision-making. Sheās so upset and blinded by the fact that she has to win at something, has to prove herself to others by taking control of her destiny in order to feel worthy.
Part of me thinks that her singing āIām not gonna loseā also refers to her belief that she wonāt lose control. She literally thinks thereās no way sheāll lose control because in her mind, she is in control despite being manipulated by Zhan Tiri the whole freaking time. So sheās trying to convince Varian (and maybe even herself) that her turn to āthe dark sideā isnāt so bad; everyoneās making a big deal out of it when to Cass, sheās just following her destiny instead of silently waiting in the wings like sheās always done.
Finally, our black rock goddess refuses to ācut her losses and drop the IOUāsā. I completely understand this part and letting the meaning sink in really hurts. Cass is done accepting things as they are and decides sheās no longer gonna let things slide. After all the times sheās swept things under the rug for the sake of her job or duties, Cass prioritizes her feelings and desires for a change. Her response to this line (āI refuseā) is pretty straightforward, but it could also reveal Cassā belief that itās too late for her to turn back and make things right. Now that sheās chosen this path, thereās no turning back.
All this to remind our souls that Cass just wants to be happy but feels that she must do so at the expense of her friends and loved ones. Why do I love to torture myself with these characters and songs?
