You know those things you think you can't write because they're an emotion not a plot?
Try oneshots!
Oneshots are great because they can be just a single scene or moment. They allow you to write that one conversation you want to write without needing to create a whole story around it.
You wish you could just write about that character getting a damn hug for once? Do it! Who needs a huge context? Just put it out there!
Oneshots, people! Write them read them. Love them. They're awesome.
May I also suggest for consideration, the drabble?
100 words. Just enough for that trivial exchange you can't get out of your head. Or a sucker punch of an emotional moment. All with a handy word limit to give it a 'writers challenge' credential.
And if you need a little extra, a double drabble!
And if you're looking to explore a character or a relationship in more than 100 words but still without having to have plot, may I suggest my favorite form, the 10x100? Ten separate drabbles of 100 words each, all little windows into a life or a pairing or a place or whatever tf you want. I use them to figure out who characters are and how they've changed over time. Has the bonus of feeling artistic and moody and meaningful even though you just slapped ten disjointed thoughts together and called it a day.
Iâll also add, since some people may think âBut do readers want to read that?â
Yes. I want to read that.
Sometimes I want to read fic but my fave stories havenât updated recently and I am not mentally ready to commit to a new, long story. Short fics like these are perfect for those moments. They scratch the itch I have for fic without becoming a big time commitment, or the dread that the story Iâm loving may never be finished. Theyâre the perfect, say, lunchbreak read. I love oneshots for this reason. Write them, people will read them.
Writing advice from my uni teachers:
If your dialog feels flat, rewrite the scene pretending the characters cannot at any cost say exactly what they mean. No one says âIâm madâ but they can say it in 100 other ways.
Wrote a chapter but you dislike it? Rewrite it again from memory. That way youâre only remembering the main parts and can fill in extra details. My teacher who was a playwright literally writes every single script twice because of this.
Donât overuse metaphors, or they lose their potency. Limit yourself.
Before you write your novel, write a page of anything from your characters POV so you can get their voice right. Do this for every main character introduced.

Hereâs a little bit on subplots!
Getting Him Back
Life was quiet now that she didnât have to hide anymore, the town had made roots in the last place it relocated itself to. The magic community didnât have to worry about hiding who they were anymore, ex operatives like her didnât have to worry about being caught and brought back anymore. She was finally free to go as she pleased again, see the ones she loved again without risk of being found and losing those closest to her. A life without worry, she couldnât even remember what that felt like anymore.
me: (writes fics in my head while running)
me: (writes fics in my head while driving)
me: (writes fics in my head while brushing my teeth)
me: (sits down to write a fic at my computer) I got nuthin
Iâd laugh harder but this is uncomfortably accurate.
Iâm in this picture and I donât like it
here have 10 pieces of writing advice that have stuck with me over the years
every characterâs first line should be an introduction to who they are as a person
even if you only wrote one sentence on a really bad day, thatâs still one sentence more than you had yesterday
exercise restraint when using swear words and extra punctuation in order for them to pack a punch when you do use them
if your characters have to kiss to show theyâre in love, then theyâre not in love
make every scene interesting (or make every scene your favorite scene), otherwise your readers will be just as bored as you
if youâre stuck on a scene, delete the last line you wrote and go in a different direction, or leave in brackets as placeholders
donât compare your first draft to published books that could be anywhere from 3rd to 103rd drafts
i promise you the story you want to tell can fit into 100k words or less
sometimes the book isnât working because itâs not ready to be written or youâre not ready to write it yet; let it marinate for a bit so the idea can develop as you become a better writer
a story written in chronological order takes a lot more discipline and is usually easier to understand than a story written with flashbacks
Bringing The Family Together
âAre you sure this will work Tori?â Blair asked, he wasnât opposed to the idea of what they were about to do, there was just no telling what was going to happen, they didnât even know if the people they spoke to were even telling the truth about him.
âIâm sure Blair.â Victoria looks up from her books. âI just have this feeling heâs not gone, not really and by doing this it will either prove me right or prove me wrong.â
me, with a vague plot idea, 1 (one) character name, and an outline that consists of mostly question marks:
i love characters who could get the absolute Shit kicked out of them and still be fine but as soon as someone touches/handles them gently itâs like âah. im going to shatter to pieces now thanksâ
Stolen Goods Rewrite Part 15
Max was very enthusiastic to help the others dock the ship, Lizzy stood off watching with amusement in her eyes. He had learned the ins and out of how the ship worked faster than anybody else ever had, she mused that it was because he had always wanted to sail the sea and that was why he was so quick to pick up how the Bella Luna operated. Max was eager to get off the ship and step foot in Scotland, he practically sprinted down the gangplank once it was lowered.
âCome on Lizzy! Let's go!â
âYou brought a puppy on our ship.â Davion teases her.
