#I need to confess that on my first (and currently only) read of SVSSS was incomplete and I did not get far enough to meet TLJ#However. The more I read about him the more I understand why people like him so much.#He is hilarious. An absolute icon. A utter weirdo and freak in a way that makes you want to experiment on him.#I fully understand why Su Xiyan put off killing him at first.#He's got a disposition that makes you go 'Okay he's a threat to eventually take out. But one more day of hijinks would be fine.'#He could be a 1001 nights protagonist the way he keeps you on his toes.

feel like we don't talk enough about the fact that shen qingqiu was fully prepared to die in the invasion of cang qiong to save his disciples, and not just in terms of without-a-cure. when he challenged sha hualing to a palm strike, he expected to die, his exact thoughts were "with this one strike, he'd ensure there were no winners", and he went in expecting his body to self destruct before liu qingge showed up.

it's such an important piece of characterization because shen yuan is often ranting in his head about "surviving at any cost" and "cheating his way out of it", but when he's actually faced with any kind of danger, his very first reaction is to protect the people around him with his life, without hesitation.

shen yuan describing himself as lazy, idle, selfish, a cheater, thigh-hugger, etc, but then showing the complete opposite in his actions, spending his time reading, painting and teaching, traveling around, going on missions and night hunts and helping his martial siblings.

i think shang qinghua is also a nice contrast and example of what actual thigh-hugging looks like, because where shang qinghua is actually flattering and praising and begging for his life, shen yuan refuses to do things he sees as "insincere", such as in the water prison when he was given the dialogue options and wouldn't pick any because they sounded insincere to him. shen yuan much prefers staying silent to lying or flattering.

with that, shen yuan also constantly puts himself on the line, whether with sha hualing, meng mo, the self-detonation, and then at cang qiong when liu qingge and luo binghe were about to battle. not to mention the fact he made the mushroom body so he could literally flee the country, but then stayed to save a whole bunch of disciples, then luo binghe, then his own body and liu qingge, and then showing up at cang qiong to throw himself at the very person he was running away from, to protect cang qiong.

in general i think it adds so well to the layer of "unreliable narrator" by making shen yuan's thoughts loud and obvious, and his actions small, so you're inclined to believe him until you take a better look at the things he actually does and what he says in between the lines.

The contrast in the body language and overall demeanor of the serving women in Jinlintai between when Jin Guangshan was in charge and when Jin Guangyao is in charge is so stark. In the earlier timeline, they are tense, fearful, looking down, bent at the waist to emphasize their servant status. In the present, they are standing straight, they look professional but relaxed, they're smiling a little. Just. Oof.

obviously if you put jc in charge of the yunmeng shuangjie reconciliation it's gonna speed things up, that man is competent af, but he also has a history of respecting other people's choice (ugh how dare he) so he's not gonna go where he thinks he's unwanted after a pretty clear breakup dismissal, no, what's gonna happen is a increasingly alarming number of parent trap, looney tunes ridiculous type of situations where they get stuck together for extended periods of time. all of these are unconsciously set up by wwx himself after he realizes that jc will, in fact, leave everything in the past (how dare you shidi!!!! i obviously meant to only leave Some Things in the past!!!)
