"we want more complicated female characters"
y'all couldn't even handle bai youning
My Roommate is a Detective.
The fuck is this ratio đ
A sketch of my favorite detective trio
For @lesbianspacedadâs prompt, âMy Roommate is a Detective, favorite outfitsâ | words by Megan Thee Stallion
I spent way too much time on these and had way too much fun
(Backgrounds for 1 and 2 by Diagonas on deviantart, inspired by this post)
Bai Youning is such an interesting character, the absolute disservice people do to her.
Her playfulness is mistaken for inability. She has just as much experience in the underworld as Chusheng. She might might have more, depending on when he entered. Did you see how she reacted to Lu Miao???
It's so clear that her immaturity is constructed. And no one thinks to explore past that???
Her relationships with her father and Chusheng are so interesting, but no one cares about those either.
I can't imagine looking at her and coming to the conclusion that she is just a conflict to be written out. She is one of the main characters, and a really fun one too.
Not to mention her heartbreak over her mother's drug addiction!
People love a male character who masks their vulnerability with bratty, aggressive playfulness, and expressing caretaking through mean-sounding scolding, but for some reason...
there's this weird thing people fall into online a lot, where people assume that if the [perceived-to-be-inferior] version of [activity] is discouraged then people will, naturally, do [perceived-to-be-superior] version of [activity] instead. When really it's just as (or more) likely that if [perceived-to-be-inferior] version of [activity] is discouraged people just won't do it at all.
audiobook listeners are not necessarily people who would otherwise do a lot of traditional reading if audiobooks did not exist, many are people who simply would experience zero books. Booktok romance readers would not necessarily be reading the classics if booktok did not exist, many of them would simply not read. Fanfiction writers would not necessarily be novelists if fanfic wasn't an option, many would just be people who didn't write. You know?
'why is so much politically-focused genre fiction centred on monarchies' many reasons, but one which I think deserves attention: monarchy is an obvious way of tying together the dysfunctions of the domestic to those of the state
zhan zhao adventures: â fight scenes
Zhan Zhao is so funny after Bai Yutang skedaddles back to his home island and on their way there the guy on the ferry complains about him:
"Maybe that Sleek Rat got into some trouble again."
"Bai Yutang beat up some guy for being prettier than him."
"With your face, you might also get beat up."
Sir, keep that up and I'm gonna start thinking you like him.
Zhan Zhao Adventures, ep 22: These three when the plot tries to separate them.
Bonus: That impeccable wordless communication as Zhan Zhao encourages Bai Yu Tang's reunion with Huo Ling Long...!
zhan zhao adventures: zhan zhao
For my buds who havenât gone on this journey with me and donât watch cdramas, in this scene Zhan Zhao is having to listen to the evil guy talk about how the worst consequence heâll face after enabling widespread governmental corruption, treason, and the slaughter of hundreds with just a slap on the wrist. This is the final death rattle of ZZâs belief in the inherent goodness of the men in leadership roles as he prepares himself to be the one to do what needs to be done. This whole story hit me so hard as someone living in these times with all the shit going on. It is perhaps the most government-critical piece of media Iâve seen in a long time and honestly Iâm shocked at how blatant that message is.
You'd think "don't use a fictional creature as an allegory for oppressed minorities and as a horde of vile automatons that it's always okay to kill in the same work at the same time" would be a no brainer, but roughly 70% of all works featuring goblins and/or robots demonstrate otherwise.
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense đ
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!

So be it, Iâm your crowbar. If thatâs what I am so far. Until you get out of this mess. And I will pretend that I donât know of your sins, until you are ready to confess. But all the time, all the time, Iâll know.Â
