There's this thing called intergenerational trauma that as an Indigenous person on Turtle Island, let me say, can fuck a People up for a long time. It will take generations to recover from such catastrophic and longstanding colonial violence. And when current leftist allies start back-peddling on their support and villainizing Palestinians if they aren't "perfect citizens" (a measurement that is highly westernized anyway), remember that trauma, especially on such a large scale, does things to people. fifty shades discourse in 2021??

hmmm...this is really interesting. i really wanted to discuss this whole thing, but didn’t know where to put it and who to discuss it with. so here i am, discussing it with myself on tumblr!

i’m reading Chapter 1 of Hunting Girls: “A Princess is Being Beaten and Raped” by Kelly Oliver for my Fairytales and Feminism class that I have in a little over an hour. the chapter touches on how sexual violence is fetishized and normalized, particularly in popular culture. not only does Oliver bring up female protagonists such as Bella (Twilight), Katniss (The Hunger Games), and Tris (Divergent), but she finishes off the chapter by discussing Anastasia Steele from Fifty Shades of Grey. 

you see, i just listened to an episode of the podcast The Worst Bestsellers -- Episode 15: Fifty Shades of Grey. for a large chunk of the episode, the hosts were actually defending Fifty Shades, something that really surprised me. I read the Fifty Shades trilogy a little less than a year ago and, to be honest, i enjoyed them as a guilty pleasure. i read them and thought to myself, well, it doesn’t seem so bad, but maybe i just wasn’t paying enough attention... but when i listened to this podcast episode, my feelings about the series were validated.

here’s the thing: Fifty Shades isn’t fucked up in the way you were taught that it was fucked up. the kink, bdsm, sexual sadism, etc. is all pretty standard and by the book. Christian makes sure that Ana fully understands and consents to anything and everything that happens to her. she has a safeword and ultimately has a lot of control, even though she is Christian’s sub. there is absolutely a very toxic and abusive relationship underlying the couple as a whole, but their sex life really is a non-issue. really, their scenes aren’t overly violent or intense, they are very standard and beginner-level kink practices. “A Princess is Being Beaten and Raped” fails to understand this, claiming that Ana is subjected and coerced into consenting to degrading and overly violent sexual acts. if you have a basic understanding of kink/bdsm before going into this book, violence is not an issue here.

wanna rag on something? go after Christian’s possessiveness, his stalking, his obsession with Ana. that’s all fair game. Christian and Ana’s sex life? maybe get another hobby, cause it all sounds a little stupid to me.

& they all just live… so happy & in love w their lil girl [& talk about adopting more bc jake met this lil boy who reminded him so much of Seth when he was younger that he just falls in LOVE w him]
