Round-up: A Lot of CSI-Style Forensics Have Turned Out to be Bogus
Basically a lot of it is pseudoscience that was never rigorously tested in controlled situations to see if it actually worked.
This is because it was not developed by scientists, but by police, and mainly with an interest in putting people in prison rather than uncovering the truth.
At least two dozen people have been falsely convicted due to âBite Mark Analysisâ.Â
âBurn pattern analysisâ put an innocent man to death in Texas
âBlood Spatter analysisâ such as that shown on the TV show Dexter is actually completely unreliable even according to the US Department of Justice
Forensic hair comparison is also widely believed to be junk science and the FBI is currently reviewing convictions based on hair analysis due to the unreliability of their results
Handwriting analysis has an unreasonably high error rate, by some accounts as high as 43%
Lie detector tests, or polygraphs, are notoriously unreliable and based on bad science. Even though everybody knows this, they are still constantly being used in criminal investigations among other places.
Toxicology labs can be poorly supervised and badly run, producing false and even fraudulent results
Due to sloppy procedure at many labs and lack of regulation even DNA testing is often unreliable
Even when correct results are produced, genetic profiles may be less useful than we have been lead to believe
Fingerprinting analysis is not foolproof and actually has not been thoroughly tested, as this Frontline special discusses
Here are a few more articles on how unreliable modern forensics are.
Unfortunately due to TV shows that stress forensic investigation, juries are demanding this kind of evidence at trial, and have little idea of how untested and unreliable it really is.
HEY REMEMBER WHEN I WROTE ABOUT THIS TWO YEARS AGO? SPECIFICALLY THE PART ABOUT FBI REVIEWING ITS FORENSICS HAIR ANALYSIS CASES? WELL THE RESULTS ARE IN AND WHOOPS: EVEN THE FBI ADMITS THAT ITâS BOGUS NOW
In case you are stopped by the paywall hereâs a Slate article on the same thing and hereâs another one.Â
Hair analysis alone has been used in thousands of trials. The FBI is reviewing 2500 cases out of â21000 federal and state requests to the FBIâs hair-comparison unit between 1972 and 1999âł. Even if this review exonerates some of those convictions, that doesnât even begin to cover the hundreds of state and local âexpertsâ trained by the FBI in this bogus âhair analysisâ technique to do things like this:
Santae Tribble served 28 years for a murder based on FBI testimony about a single strand of hair. He was exonerated in 2012. It was later revealed that one of the hairs presented at trial came from a dog.
So anyway remember anytime you hear about âforensic evidenceâ that a lot of it is bullcrap and not scientifically validated and a lot of so-called experts are just pulling conclusions out of their ass.
the forensic hair analysis thing is terrible, the FBI literally invented a branch of forensic psuedoscience with no evidence behind it in order to boost conviction rates, then taught the bogus technique to thousands of forensic investigators in the us and around the world. we have no idea how many people have been wrongfully convicted, and this is just one in a very long list of forensic techniques that lack rigorous scientific evaluation
Itâs been another year or two so hereâs an extremely recent article about how âCriminal Profilingâ is totally bogus and TV shows like Mindhunters continue to focus on it because it looks cool and makes good stories, but it really only works in the movies.Â
Profiling was trendy in the 70s-90s but has been falling into disrepute ever since. This 2007 analysis showed that Criminal Profilers do not outperform regular detective work. Hereâs another analysis finding Profiling unreliable in its current form and suggests ways to make it more scientifically rigorous. Hereâs another.Â
Weâve all been there: You have stuff you need to get done, you know you need to get it done, but no matter what you do you just cant get yourself to take out your stuff and do your work.Â

listen to free audiobooks on youtube in the background
fall asleep to whispered ASMR videos in your target language (search on youtube ASMR + the language youâre learning)

See, this is a great resource, but the education system didnât teach me how to budget or pay my bills. My mother did. Thatâs HER job. Your family should be teaching you this. This is something that really irks me. Why is it the schoolâs job to teach things your parents should teach you? If you got the orgasm from having sex to make the baby, you should be raising the kid right.
- some people have abusive/neglectful parents
- some people never had parents and are in foster care
- some peopleâs parents are immigrants/disabled/otherwise canât impart knowledge about what it takes to survive in western capitalism
why are punishing the child if their parent is incapable of teaching them. if public school education is mandated to teach you algebra and the statesâ capitols donât you think they could spare some time for some real world information???
btw if youre ever stressed thereâs this website that plays the animal crossing music according to your time its really relaxing: http://tane.us/ac/nl.html
I believe in free education, one thatâs available to everyone; no matter their race, gender, age, wealth, etc⌠This masterpost was created for every knowledge hungry individual out there. I hope it will serve you well. Enjoy!

Redditorâs family doesnât believe in Finland a.k.a. âThe Finland Conspiracyâ
Text:
Oh God here goes.
Well firstly they say that the actual âplace of Finlandâ is just Eastern Sweden. Helsinki is in Eastern Sweden and when people fly there itâs not like they would notice.
World maps are altered as itâs a U.N conspiracy to keep people believing in Finland. And the idea that an entire country is made up seems so bizarre that nobody would ever believe it, making it easy to do.
Finlandâs main company, Nokia, is apparently owned by the Japanese and theyâre a main player in this.
Now as for 'whyâ people would want to invent Finland as a country thatâs a bit more in depth and thereâs a few reasons as to why Sweden and Russia go along with it but itâs mostly to do with Japanese fishing rights.
You see the Japanese love their sushi but tight fishing regulations and public outcry mean they canât fish as much as they want. So after the Cold War they agreed with Russia to create a 'landmassâ called Finland where they could fish. After all, if people thought there was a country there nobody would expect the Japanese to be harpooning whales would they?
The fish is then transported through Russia where a small percentage of the food is given to the population, (they were of course starving at the time of Finland being invented), and then is shipped to Japan under the disguise of 'Nokiaâ products. Japan is apparently one of the worlds largest importers of Nokia products despite the fact that 'nobody there owns a Nokia phoneâ apparently.
The crux of all this however, and my favourite part, is the homage that the Japanese gave to this entire conspiracy theory.
What do fish have? Fins. Therefore they named their imaginary country Finland.
There are loads more that they go on about but I canât remember it all at the moment.
EDIT: Thanks for the Gold! Iâm amazed how big this has gotten, I told my parents and although they donât really understand Reddit theyâre glad that the 'truthsâ being put out there for people to make their own decision.

Colours in Italy: Use and Cultural References
We donât realize it, because we never truly pay attention, but colours play multiple roles in our culture and everyday life. Curious about which are the colours connected with Italy? Continue to read!
LIGHT-BLUE [ AZZURRO ]
Light blue is the representative colour of Italy, as also our National Football Team - the Azzurri - demonstrates. It was first picked by our team in honor of the royal family of Savoy that used to have a light-blue string in the coat-of-arms;
A very popular song in Italy is âAzzurroâ by Adriano Celentano, which describes a lonely summer in the city. It has become one of the most sung Italian tunes abroad along with âVolareâ and â âO sole mioâ;
Disneyâs âPrince Charmingâ is translated in the Italian version as âPrincipe Azzurroâ (Prince Light Blue). This denomination recalls the traditional colour of the former royal family of Savoy, as I explained before.
RED [ ROSSO ]
Racing red is the official colour of Italian cars picked by the International Automobile Federation in motor racing;
In art we have Titian red, used constantly by the painter in his works, the Venetian â and the Pompeiian red. The latter is still visible in the walls of the villas of the famous city submerged by the ashes of Vesuvius in 79 AD;
Being the colour of passion, a sentiment quite ingrained in our culture, it was also integrated in the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics of Turin in 2006, matched with the slogan âPassion lives hereâ;
In the fashion world we have the famous Red Valentino, the colour that was so characteristic of the Lombard stylist Valentino Garavani;
Red Dolomite â the typical glow that illuminates the Dolomites at sunrise and sunset, as if on fire.Â

Hi, Iâm Wynter, Iâm Deaf and fluent in ASL (American Sign Language). I get a lot of people telling me they want to learn to sign, but not knowing exactly where to start. So, I am here to provide that!
Letâs start off with some basics, though. ASL does NOT follow English grammar (Signed Exact English/SEE does, but it is not ASL), it only uses English words and a lot of the communication with singing is done via facial expression and body language. Basically, it goes in the order of time > topic > comment. For example, â I am going to pet dogs next weekâ would be ânext week dogs me petâ, but there are quite a few variants and every person who signs will have a different way of doing this. Sort of how people who speak English in different parts of America have an accent and different ways to sign things. The most important thing to note about ASL is that *American* Sign Language is not universal. Most languages have their own form of SL and a lot of the word signs/alphabets are not at all the same. Another note, learning SEE may seem easier at first, but it can actually make the transition to ASL grammar that much more difficult. An example of differing signs is BSL (British Sign Language) vs ASL.Â
This is the BSL finger alphabet:
And this is the American one:
So while there is a small bit of crossover, it is very, very different! Donât get me wrong, a lot of times signers will understand each other at least a little bit, but it does need to be noted that signs can differ by language, country, region, and sometimes person.Â
