We're excited to announce the return of Meta May Mondays! Throughout the month of May, we’re encouraging people to post meta. We have some themes suggested for each Monday in May below, but all meta that fits our guidelines is welcome! Generally, we are looking for canon-compliant meta based on good faith analysis of the show, of at least 100 words.

May 5: Bardo. Explore characters' journeys through Bardo or relationship with wielding it, or dreamscapes in general. If you want, you could always have a Kira-coded moment and research Bardo, to think about what meaning it might bring to the show!

So I’m rewatching Teen Wolf again and something that really stood out to me is that in the seen with Allison and the dog she hit, as he’s trying to get her to pet it, he tells her that you don’t want her to sue, I hear this breed is very litigious. That’s not word you usually hear a teenager use out of nowhere. Which leads me to believe that Scott has always had a big vocabulary. Stiles also calls him a nerd and says that because he hangs around Scott he himself is a nerd by association. That coupled with the fact that Deaton trusts a sixteen year old Scott to be at the clinic at night by himself and Scott himself is comfortable enough to do the splint himself even with him having seen Deaton do it himself a ton of times most people would be hesitant to do them themselves for the first time. But Scott does it no problem. He’s easy under pressure and he’s sharp witted enough to understand how to do something when he’s stated he’s only ever seen it done. Also Deaton later in the season tells Scott that he can guarantee that Scott is one of the least slacking kids in town. Which tells us he’s a hard worker.

All this leads me to believe that Scott is a quick learner/works hard to understand things and has a pretty large vocabulary for a teenager. I mean we see him studying in season 3 and using the vocab words in the first episode. Also it’s all about him reinventing himself and trying to be a better son/student. Which I think is less about him trying now to be a good student and more trying to get back to before the bite when he was a better student. And we know he wanted to be a vet and I’d bet that that wasn’t a new dream he had in his senior year and probably was something he had been working towards before the bite.

All this to say that I think Scott was a hard working student at the very least. I don’t think he was top of the class but I think he did well enough. At least well enough to be labeled a nerd. I do think that it didn’t come easy to him like it does Lydia and he had to work on it. Cuz you can see at the beginning of season 3 and 5 that he puts the effort in to make notes and highlight which are all typical study techniques. So my thoughts are that when it comes to book learning he has to work a little harder but when it’s hands on he can pick it up faster as with the splinting of the dog in season 1. Also in season five when him and Kira are talking about why he never told her about UC Davies and being a vet, he said it was because he worried he wasn’t smart enough to do it. I think that’s more of because of how everyone looks at him like he’s dumb and he’s started to believe that especially if book learning recquired a lot more planning for him which he wouldn’t have a lot of time for after the bite with everything going crazy all the time.

Anyways, Scott McCall isn’t dumb and before the bite was a hard working teenager. And anyone who just reduces his character to the dumb one and Stiles to the smart one is ridiculous. Both characters are so much more nuanced than that. And also Stiles is the research guy not the smart one that’s Lydia. She’s shown time again and again that she’s brilliant not just book smart but she knows how to read people and use how people see her to her advantage.

the first time you hear allison argent saying - “I freaked out like a girly girl. And I am not a girly girl", you just roll you eyes. its the early 2000s show. the fc is supposed to be 'not like other girls'. but then the show goes on and you see her family and then it clicks. its not just her wanting be different or pick me. its a deep ingrained conditioning that her family did to her. She is not supposed to be weak. She is supposed to be a the leader. she doesn't know that tho. all she knows is that her mother is strict and cold and her father very overprotective. They are raising her to be a cold and calculating matriarch that will lead the hunters. emotions have no place in that. that's why whenever there is scene of allison breaking down, she has to repress herself half way through, or if she breaks down completely she is ashamed of herself for doing that. just like after night school when she tells kate that she hated being powerless and scared and she didnt want to feel like that. when she first finds out about the existence of werewolves, her reality shifts and she breaks down and speeds up, and halfway crying tells the sherrif to write her a ticket cause even then she cant afford being this emotional and weak. When her mother pushes her to be tough, stating that girls who only worry about boyfriends and proms aren't strong. and she says "Can't I be strong and go to prom?". That's why she always insists on taking care of herself because that's what she's been taught to do. Even after she finds out that her family was in the wrong and her mother and aunt dies, even after being with her friends, she cant exactly let go of thay voice in her head that tells her that she cant be weak. The hallucination of her dead mother follows her. not to comfort her, but to yell at her to not be weak. And atlast my favorite scene. When she's in the elevator with the sherrif and she breaks down once again but this time she admits how scared she is and how powerless she feels and for once she gets comforted. maybe now she might be able to let go of the voice that tells her she cant be weak but then she dies.

scott pov of his own childhood is always devastating but right now I'm really stuck on scott seeing his dad spiral deeper into alcoholism and becoming more overtly physically and emotionally abusive vs seeing stiles' dad spiral deeper into alcoholism but then actually dig himself out of it like how would you as a child even deal with that. how would scott as a baby who already has poor self worth and a fuckton of abandonment issues due to the aforementioned abuse understand that his dad just didnt try to be better and would he blame himself for it. maybe scott's dad really is a different type of person or maybe scott wasn't 'worth' changing for.

Scott was moving so desperately in season five, and I understand why, he was stressed, upset and depressed. the dread doctors and theo were fucking with shit in beacon hills and fucking with him, respectively, in a way that he's never been fucked with before, and he was in a position of responsibility that he honestly has never had to be in before not to the extent he was in season 5 anyway. he's always had other people to turn to, many of which had more experience than he does and arguably had or would take on just as much (if not more) responsibility to deal with the supernatural as he did but that was no longer true true for season five. Like everything truly was on him and he was functionally alone, as a leader, and then was isolated from his pack. Like, damn they really had my man STRESSED.

It's actually so twisted and sick that Corey doesn't have a defined relationship with his parents and he's invisible to them to the point where they didn't even notice that he was gone or even dead, and his literal power turned out to be invisibility.

I wish they explored the connection between Scott and the nemeton because it was heavily implied in s3. Like what do you mean Scott was drawing random symbols which he was so compelled by that he had to tattoo it on his arm, just for him to see the exact same symbol on the magical tree when he died, and all this was never spoken about again?

Why the hell did it take me more than six years to notice Scott is wearing a red hood when he encounters a wolf for the first time... like the Little Red Riding Hood

I love shows that throw some bullshit that will make u think forever . teen wolf…… why can werewolves take the pain of any living thing, man or dog. teen wolf were you making a commentary on how serious violating trauma makes you prone to taking on the pain of others even at the expense of yourself. was it a metaphor for how once you’ve begun healing you can help heal the others. was it just some bullshit. what did you mean by that Jeff Davis I’m outside or your home rn banging on your door ANSWERRRR MEEEEEEE. also what about being half man half wolf makes you able to take the pain of others. also times four for a minute we thought it was just removing pain until a creature that feeds on pain reveals Scott has been storing all the pain he’s taken inside himself. HOW LONG DOES IT FUCKING HURT. I’m dizzy I’m nauseous. even if it’s a metaphor what do the actual mechanics look like! what is the in universe justification!

Anyways I’d like to point out the difference between Scott and werewolf Scott, and it’s not about his form.

There is an obvious change in demeanor in season 1

I lowkey might be crazy for this but trust me pls.

Compared to when Scott is normally mad you can still see there’s still a difference, and this is why I still love the scene where him and Lydia are talking because if you pay attention, that is NOT Scott being normal at all, ESPECIALLY when they kiss

something about p*ter h*le being responsible for creating both malia and scott, and how the person that fathers you/bites you/makes you a were isnt the person that makes you who you are. something about malia being abandoned and left to fend for herself and having her dad setting up traps for her in the woods. something about scott still having a father who didnt raise him and an alpha who didnt take him as pack. something about malia and scott being, not the same person, but like. cousins. wolves and coyotes.

i'm sure this same post has been made a few times in the last decade or so but i love the tattoo theme in s03e01 and how it plays into the larger assault narrative framing scott’s turning. the bite made his body and his mind both into fraught territory, unknown and dangerous, tainted and outside of his control. he had to hide what had happened to him. he tried to ignore it, he tried to undo it. and over and over again he was shown that what this assault changed him in ways that couldn’t be changed back. he had to resign himself to being what he’d become, but he still tried to regain a degree of agency by attempting to protect others from going through the same thing, and when that couldn’t be done, he tried to spare them the worst of the aftermath, tried to do for isaac, boyd, erica and jackson what he wished somebody had done for him. meanwhile peter, derek and the argents at different turns and in different ways all threatened, violated and hurt him, coerced him and used him as a pawn in a war that scott never wanted any part of. now, trying again to reclaim his life, trying again to push past the life-shattering trauma and live a normal life, the tattoo disappearing is a reminder of what’s been done to him, and his insistence on making it stick shows where his priorities lay: his body may still not be quite his but he’s taking it back, and he’s more than willing to endure in order to do that.

Noticed this little detail in Status Asthmaticus where Scott's last call with Lydia was at 1.53AM-

And I love how that means he called her up when he was spending the night at Deaton's clinic and her at the Sheriff's station to keep her updated on everything going on.

Lydia was a little separated from him because she was dealing with Parrish and their connection for most of the season (as intended by the writers to isolate Scott further ofc), but I love that this implies she was still very much in the loop even though she wasn't physically there all the time <3

I actually really love this scene. A couple of people have called it a throwaway, but I actually think it was a Really Important moment. This was Scott pointing out that Boyd is a PERSON and a person who MATTERS at that. A person with a first name and a last name. Allison, to some degree, forgot that. Chris quite frankly never even considered it. To Derek, I think, Erica and Boyd were and are about his failure more than they ever were about the people they are (though that may be changing; yay for character growth). But for Scott, Boyd is his last name. Vernon is his first name. That little frown, that twitch of his face as if he’s thinking about the fact that he’s never called him Vernon and wondering if he prefers Boyd or just always got called Boyd or all the other things people didn’t realize about him…

In an episode that seriously dehumanized Vernon Boyd in problematic and heart-wrenching ways… Scott stuck up for his humanity.  Vernon Boyd is someone who needs help. Someone.  ALWAYS.

cannot get over scott being sent a divine vision that he can't save himself. no matter what he does, how many people he helps, the wolf will always find the young man in the red hoodie. all scott can do is watch a bit of history repeat.
