recovery isn’t always how it is portrayed. this portrayal is harmful because it ignores so many people:
self destruction is common
fear of recovery is not ‘anti-recovery’
mental health professionals can be abusive..
… even if they mean well.
a lot of mental health services are shit or non-existent
a lot of people are refused help for particular disorders, like bpd
so many ‘fall through the system’
or are perpetually on waiting lists.
to get help for your mental illness they expect you to answer calls, emails, show up to appointments. but what about when your mental illness stops this.
they say the first step is a support system. but so many people Don’t have that
“well i can’t help you for your mental illness if you show symptoms during session”
we say: some people can’t get diagnosed. but also also: some disorders don’t get seen. they don’t get a foot in the door because they’re too scary, ‘untreatable’
so when people say recovery is your responsibility; you have to “be brave and take the first step”. like you’re the embodiment of privilege. “choose recovery”. well some people can’t choose.
and some people are forced.
recovery is always possible. but it often doesn’t look the way it is portrayed. and people need to know that, or they give up, or they feel guilt and shame. and they are shamed by others.
throughout all this is the question: ‘what about them?’ what happens to them, if they aren’t your perfectly innocent mentally ill person? what happens to those who have ‘let it get too bad’. is it just: fuck em they don’t deserve help? because it feels like that’s what is implied. and that’s definitely what happens.
