A Zoo for Chris Marker

The Petite Planète series of travel guides was initiated by Chris Marker and published, with his contributions between 1954 - 1963, by Èditions du Seuil, Paris. A Zoo for Chris Marker by Richard Bevan & Tamsin Clark collects all the images of animals from each of the 31 books that Marker had involvement in and brings them together in a new book.

PpR Journal is concerned with experiences surrounding fashion and culture. It allows creative people to operate out of their own discipline through collaboration.

PpR Journal does not set out to dictate or present current trends in fashion but to communicate a language of taste existing between people, clothing, and cultural discourses.

In this launch issue, contributors engage in the emotive response to fashion and clothing. Tokyo based fashion designer Yoshikazu Yamagata (written afterwards and written by) presents a short thesis on fashion and expression, and New York City based producer and musician Joakim, responds with photography.

Marie Jacotey Launch  Tuesday 29 September 6:30-9pm (artist talk 7:30pm)

Please join us to celebrate the publication of Marie Jacotey’s Dear Love Who Should Have Been Forever Mine with an evening drinks reception and live drawing event. The artist will be in conversation with Maisie Skidmore (assistant editor at AnOther magazine) and will be signing books over the course of the evening. 

Dear Love Who Should Have Been Forever Mine is the first book produced by French artist Marie Jacotey, published by common-editions. The book presents a collection of unique drawings and texts, slowly revealing the correspondence between two former lovers trying to piece together their story. Jacotey's book is made up of 30 individual artworks, loosely folded and gathered into two sections, each corresponding to the perspective of one of the protagonists. Part introspection, part emotional exchange, the visual correspondence can be read in multiple ways. 

Marie Jacotey has created two limited edition prints to coincide with her artist’s book, My Love For You Was Explosive and You. Each digital print edition is hand finished, signed, and numbered by the artist. Original drawings from the book will also be on display during the event.

Photographs of Mauss’ live ballet are printed directly over the pages of an earlier book by the same title, realised as part of Mauss’ exhibition at Bergen Kunsthall in 2013, in which drawings and text “…touch upon and merge with a re-figured, or derailed, transposition of the short-lived militant homosexual magazine Inversions (Paris, 1924-1925) interspersed with digital translations of the study Raoul Dufy: L'Oeuvre en soie, Logique d'un oeuvre ornamental industriel to create a narrative, broken poem laced with impenetrable passages,” Bracketed by texts originally performed by Kim Gordon and Juliana Huxtable, the direct superimposition of the unraveling ballet 1NVERS1ONS over the pre-existing book 1NVERS1ONS presents a simultaneity of “liveness” through the intertwined layering of text, drawings, and photographs.

Heart of Darkness - Fiona Banner £12.99 buy

In 2012, Fiona Banner was invited to create an exhibition of works drawn from the Archive of Modern Conflict, a London-based collection of photographs and ephemera relating to war and conflict. After much time delving into the archive, Banner observed a lack of images relating to conflict in the here and now. In a reversal of roles, Banner commissioned Paolo Pellegrin, a Magnum conflict photographer who has worked extensively in the Congo, to observe the City of London – its streets and trading floors, its costume and surrounding strip-clubs – through Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. The resulting photographs were first exhibited at Peer, London under the title Mistah Kurtz – He Not Dead.

A selection of these images now form part of the Archive, they can be found filed under ‘Heart of Darkness, 2014’. They also form the illustrations for this new publication of Conrad’s novella, which takes the form of a luxury magazine.

Heart of Darkness (first published in 1899) is a story of trade and corruption, and of our own conflicts and desires. From a boat moored on the banks of the Thames, Marlow narrates his story in which he travels to the heart of the Congo in search of renegade ivory trader Kurtz, who has mesmerised and enslaved his workers.

Like many artists of her generation Banner has lived just outside the boundaries of London’s financial district since the early 90s observed the area’s close proximity to the Square Mile and its apparent separation from it. This publication links with Banner’s first artist book The Nam(1997) that references Apocalypse Now, a film that uses Conrad’s text as its narrative template.

You Should Have Heard What I Just Seen - James Hamilton £50.00 buy

Here Hamilton opens up his archives for the first time, revealing across 300 pages a trove of previously unpublished black-and-white photographs--portraits, snapshots, sketches and contact sheets. The publication is a recent title from Thurston Moore’s art and culture press Ecstatic Peace Library.

Le pigment de la lumiere - Olaf Nicolai/ Heidi Specker £27.95 buy

Olaf Nicolai developed the work Le Pigment de la lumiere  for the reconstructed Master’s Houses in Dessau. Coating the walls with marble dust in varying degrees of granulation to create geometric patterns, the work was designed to respond to changing light conditions. Heidi Specker’s photographs document this almost invisible work, directing the gaze to contours of surface and space. The book form is also beautifully considered with a delicate fold-out cover revealing maps of the Master’s Houses designed by Gropius where the works are installed.

Queer Spirits - AA Bronson and Peter Hobbs £28.00 buy

AA Bronson has spent a lifetime queering the cultural world. Here he joins up with Toronto-based artist and academic Peter Hobbs to spin a tale in images and words of five performances, all titled "Invocation of the Queer Spirits." From 2008 to 2010 Bronson and Hobbs brought together small groups of men—in Banff, New Orleans, Winnipeg, Manhattan, and Fire Island—in a secret group ritual that was different every time and yet always the same. Invoking the "queer" and marginalized histories of each site, the men performed something that Bronson has characterized as "a hybrid between group therapy, ceremonial magic, a séance, a circle jerk, and a quilting bee."

This book explores each site in five chapters of photographic images, primarily by AA Bronson, together with a brilliant and often humorous reflection on queer animals, forest rangers, shamanism, and park sex by Peter Hobbs. With drawings by Eliijah Bergher and a glow-in-the-dark cover motif.

Georgina Corrie’s work has recently evolved into collections of luscious ceramic cubes made in groups to be played with and rearranged in the manner of earthy toys. 

Gareth Williams is particularly interested in the sculptural possibilities of basketry techniques and recently has been concentrating on coiling (effectively a form of 3D embroidery) and plaiting using interwoven flat strips.
