A Cautious Return (OOC)

TA: Nearly three years ago to the day, I became very overwhelmed with running the blogs I have on this site. I deleted the app and slowly started focusing more on bettering my own life. 

TA: Until recently, I’ll be honest and say it hadn’t exactly panned out. 

TA: However! With changes in place, I’m fairly confident that I will be able to return to my analysis work with only a small amount of effort. I hope to spend this time refreshing my breadth of knowledge and absorbing even more :)

TA: All the while, feel free to send in any questions you may have or anything you’d want analyzed! The blog is about to undergo a complete makeover, so don’t mind that, but...

TA: Alrighty guys, it's time to be upfront with you. I've been gone a lot lately. Rest assured I've seen your asks, I've thought of their answers and I have so many drafts... But I'm sad to say this is going nowhere. Between getting ready for cons, what used to be me being busy with school, stress of losing and trying to stay in contact with close friends, and just all around lack of will to run this blog? Nothing is getting done. TA: So, I'm leaving it up to you. TA: Should I delete the blog? Should I keep it? I have no clue if it will ever pick back up, and I really am not comfortable with the idea of more than one other mod, even if the rest are wonderful people. Truth be told I am not in contact with many of them... Should I move the blog somewhere else? Let me know at my personal blog (knightly-doom), in the reblogs or in a comment :)

Void =/= Nothing

Void is not just ‘nothing’ but it is also the ‘lacking of’ it is secrecy and unexistence. It is what is hidden and not what is present, not just nothing ness. A Knight of Void isn’t just someone who is going to use nothing (they do 'weaponize’ their aspect, but its more of a 'to use/exploit’ class) would exploit secrets, what people don’t know, and would pretty much use (or weaponize) invisibility. Its more than 'using nothing’. Nothing is just a very vague definition of what Void really is in my opinion.

Alright, groggy and belated thoughts as I’m reading the 4/27/2015 Homestuck update. I’m very much half-asleep and exhausted, so this’ll be brief as-I’m-reading and not comprehensive. (I’ll get to the important ones of my somewhere-between-50-and-75 inbox asks tomorrow.)

Upd8 Thoughts: Why is Everyone Acting So Strangely? Alternatively Titled “Vriska is a Thief of Light”

So, like many of you, while reading this upd8 my first thought was basically “what the fuck” followed by “no” and then “NO” and then “STOP NO THIS IS NOT OKAY.” And for a moment I was freaking out because what happened to all my lovely characters? What happened to Karkat’s aggressive need to be a leader? What happened to Rose’s need to be a complete know-it-all? Why is Terezi acting nigh submissive towards Vriska? What happened to Dave’s need to be a hero?

And as I read, I realized that all of these things had one thing in common: Light! Once Vriska stepped in, all of the characters lost their agency:

VRISKA: Sorry to steal all the timey thunder from the gr8 “Knight of Time”, end quote, 8ut someone had to take the initi8tive and go on a fact-finding mission.  DAVE: no its cool  DAVE: you can have that thunder if you want it

I could go on and on with the examples, and these are only from the first few pages! It just continues—the characters are losing their Light, and are becoming steeped in Void. And why might that be?

Vriska Serket is a Thief of Light! It’s in her job description—she steals Light from others and takes it for herself. Now Vriska is the leader, now Vriska is the one in the spotlight, now Vriska is the one who knows what’s happening! We’ve never seen her take on this kind of Light before—before, she focused on stealing the spotlight, yes, but not in this way! She stole Luck and treasure, but not agency, or at least not in this quantity! Over these three years, she has drained the team of their Light.

Why? I can’t say for sure. At a guess, I would say that it happened slowly, no god tier majyyks involved here. After the events of Cascade, my bet would be that the kids and trolls were pretty freakin’ worn out. The kids had just had a tumultuous couple of days (or weeks, for Dave), constantly running around, dying, becoming possessed, having their family members killed…who wouldn’t need to have a break? And the trolls, the trolls! They’d finished their session extraordinarily rapidly (I forget the exact amount of time), and then had been plunged straight into time shenanigans, and not to mention, horrorstuck! Again, pretty traumatic, even for trolls. So, while the kids and trolls want to ease back, just for a little bit…Vriska doesn’t need to. And at first, I’m sure that they’d be happy to let Vriska take care of things while they got their shit together, but Vriska is a Thief, and she kept that agency that they gave up. And slowly, slowly, she took more and more until they were all stumbling in the Void, looking towards her as a beacon of Light.

BUT! I don’t think that all is lost for our precious children. Because we may have a Thief of Light, but we also have…

A Rogue of Void.

The Thief of Light steals agency and importance from others, yes, but what does the Rogue of Void do? The Rogue of Void takes irrelevance and meaninglessness from those who have too much of it…and redistributes it to those who have too little.

I believe that Roxy and John’s appearance will trigger a shift of events, sudden or insidious, that will begin to transfer the lack of agency that the others have to the agency-heavy Vriska, so that everything evens out. How? I’m not quite sure, but I’m fairly certain that it is gonna play out something along those lines.

Hello! I saw you had did a thing on the personality difference between a Knight of Light and Witch of Light, could you do the same for a Knight of Light and a Knight of Life?

TA: Of course! 

TA: Wow, had to dig to find that one...

TA: Here is from the ask: 

TA: A Knight of Light would be a player who often underachieves, and acts much more laid back or dumber than they really are. They would boast about their achievements that they think are cool, thinking that people’s opinions of them matter a lot. They would realize that they are great just how they are, and become less of a… stereotypical jock type as the session continued. They take any little bit of Light, knowledge, luck, and skill there is and exploit it into something great. TA: They are generally very sweet, as well, if maybe a little stuck up. Know-it-all type. Great at making inferences/predictions. Educated guess.

TA: The difference between a Knight of Light and a Knight of Life is more... what, than the how (as the difference between the Knight and Witch is).

TA: Knights pretend to lack with their aspect, build a wall around them to isolate themselves from the possibility that they really just are filled to the brim with their aspect. This you already know. 

TA: A Knight of Life would act very sarcastic, very apathetic, and very... lifeless. Most likely making a lot of snappy comments, acting like they are without a care. This is likely to cover up a pain they had at one point, where they are hesitant to show that they care about something. They would keep their interests a secret to all but their closest friends... That is, until they come out of this stupid hard shell they've grown into. 

TA: The Knight of Life would them grow into a person who shows that they care, and knows how to take that and use it to their advantage. They are someone who won’t let others get them down, and are someone who is generally more upbeat and is the heart of the group :)

different witch of breath with the land of shade and ice (who knew there'd be two of us), do you have any good strifespecibus kinds (what even is terminology; weapon is what im getting at), and who would be the denizen of the land of shade and ice? my personal land is an expanse of frozen forest, where the ice froze completely transparent and you can see the bright red of the fallen leaves below it, and there's always really dark clouds overhead, but it never snows or rains(cont)

and it’s really really noisy like when the wind blows the ice-covered trees rattle together or fall over and the ice creaks whenever you walk and the breezes are constantly whispering and the denizen is awake so there’s rumbling growls every now and then and maybe there’s birdsong because i absolutely love birds. the breeze can manifest itself into what i like to call ‘pixies’, women made of swirling blue that bring the witch knowledge of the happenings on her planet.

TA: Your land sounds so cool! 

TA: I must say though, Denizens are not affected by your land, per say. It’s actually relatively unknown what decides your Denizen, however it seems that aspect has something to do with it… 

TA: Likely, your Denizen may be Typheus! 

TA: As for your Strife Specibus, this is more determined by your personality and personal preferences. Though, if I had to guess I’d say something something long range, maybe with a sharp tip? Or something able to bout bound others, and free them. A chain scythe?

TA: I really don’t know- it’s up to you to decide! My best guess isn’t always accurate, but we’ll see! :)

Thanks for the answer! I was wondering because i have an idea for a rage character(knight probs) that is really good at protecting others from rage, or for inciting another player's rage when they need to be angry for something, but is actually a really nice, mellow person

TA: If you want, I can tell you what being a Knight of Rage would entail? As Knights are ones that exploit their aspect, they can also seem as if they are lacking it. They are able to control it, even if it is swirling around deep in the depths of their heart.

TA: So while Knight's don't exactly protect others from their aspect, they are able to utilize everything about it to their very whim! This means the positive parts as well as the negative.

TA: This does not, however, mean that the Knight is a generally angry person. Rage does not just deal with anger- it deals with raw and pure emotion. The Knight would likely just be prone to brooding a lil bit- or it could even just mean that when the Knight is upset, they truly are upset. They feel/show everything at once, or they don't let themselves feel/show it at all.

TA: All in all, I see next to no problems!

Does a person always have to follow general guidelines in terms of personality for God tiers? Like, a really mellow and laid back person ends up being a powerful rage player? Or someone who is really dopey or straight up stupid being a mind player?

TA: The thing with guidelines is this: your aspect is not the only thing that will affect your personality. The aspect is the subject, and the class is how you affect that- not just the physical parts of the power, but the personality too. 

TA: Take an Heir. The Heir can literally become their aspect- whereas on the other hand you can have a Prince, someone who destroys their aspect. Do you really think those two would behave the same, even if they are both, say... Mind players? One would be the epitome of Logic, and the other would destroy every single bit of it at their very will.

TA: So while guidelines are just that- guidelines, you still have have to look at every possible variable that could have an effect. How many players are in the session, what those players are, and what their total classpect is. 

TA: It definitely is possible to have what you described! The stereotype isn't always right, just as it isn't always right with every other possible stereotype in the world.

TA: On another note, I am very sorry for not coming to the aid of my fellow players in the past few months. It truly is tiring to complete your quests, and I have been recovering from a certain mishap during my last adventure for quite some time now. 

TA: I hope to be getting back into swing soon!

what kind of powers would a witch of time have, and would she be a good player to have in a session? what about a witch of void? thank you!

VL: Ah... I'm crying internally, I wrote out a huge post for an ask and accidentally deleted it... What a waste of time.

VL: Before we begin- I’d like to state that anyone can be a good player in any session, so long as they utilize their full potential, and for productive matters.

Witch of Time: Active, controls changes in time, destruction, inevitability, death. We have a canon example in Damara, who perfectly demonstrates all the ways a WoT can go wrong. Her vengeance streak was the ultimate downfall of the alpha trolls’ session, and a magnificent display of a WoT’s ingame powers. They’re masters of manipulating timelines, always where they need to be at just the right second to do whatever it takes to make things go horribly right or fantastically wrong! Once godtiered, they’ll excel at changing the fates of themself and their teammates.

But of course, all this is rather limited. Witches don’t outright create or destroy- not on the level of Maids, Sylphs, Bards or Princes, even Space and Time players- so much as just… toy around what’s already there, or already going to happen. It’s like what John’s doing at present, but the changes are a lot less subtle. There’s only so much you can change about something. But that still gives you a lot of freedom, and what you do to change can have even bigger consequences than originally imagined!

Witch of Void: Active, controls changes in mystery, obfuscation, misfortune, the unknown. A master manipulator, and no one would even know they were pulling the strings! As long as no one figured out the truth, their power to twist secrets and lies and mysteries is unmatched. And of course, they’re perfectly capable of manipulating through Void too, turning secrets against people or using a supposedly nonexistent thing to do their work. (The latter brings to mind something like controlling a cryptid, or some kind of “dark magic”, perhaps? Wow, that’d be cool!!)

VL: It would be nice if a Witch of Time went back and stopped me from deleting that post!

okay so heir of space session ask back again apparently the spade is not a thing i can put in an ask without it cutting the rest of the ask off so the last two were ToH(kismesis)MoM and KoB<3SoL how would those work out? thank you!!

TA: EC and I are currently working on this one :) I'm teaching her more about classpects on the way.

TA: Only on certain platforms does the spade not show up- on my laptop here it works just fine.
