Skyrim was a good game because it was very easy for people who weren’t into video games to pick up and learn how to play. I know for myself it was the first game with like, a plot that I’d ever played, with my only experience with gaming before that being games like Mario Kart and the Sims. Skyrim itself is pretty straight forward. The plot is easy to understand. Mechanics like leveling are straight forward. There’s no issues like armor durability and weapons breaking, so you can play mindlessly without worrying. You also don’t really need to know any of the lore to play it. The combat itself is also pretty forgiving for someone who is learning how to play. It’s not so likely you’re going to get your shit kicked in a thousand times before you get good. The game teaches you what you need to know in order to understand the basics of the game. 

Yeah, it’s far from perfect. But there’s a reason why it was SO DAMN popular.
