Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” that was written in 1950 is set on the day of August 4th, 2026 (tomorrow)!! Now’s your chance to read it around the time it’s based in!
Audio: A recording of Leonard Nimoy reading it on Internet Archive.
Text: A PDF version.
Graphic Novel: On Internet Archive.
There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.
Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.
And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.

I can't get over Holmes and Watson in A Study in Scarlet. Holmes seriously puts out an advertisement trying to lure a murderer to the rooms at Baker Street and uses his brand new roommate's name in it without even asking him first, and then mentions it offhandedly later like. oh yeah. by the way. I asked a murderer to come visit you. should be here any minute. hope that's cool.
and Watson is just like:
okay <3 yay <3

Why are most doctors so incapable of understanding that, when you've been too ill to work for 2 years, normal test results are NOT a good thing?? Even when you try to explain to them! It's like you don't exist to them as a person, only a bunch of numbers, and if the numbers are normal then why should they give a shit about you?
I honestly don't understand why it's such a hard concept to grasp. I cannot get treatment until they figure out what is wrong with me, and if the test results are normal that doesn't magically fix me!!
They get my hopes up for like 3 months telling me I probably have a very fixable benign tumour, and I begin to think this time, after 15 years, I finally have The Vitamin. My mum is convinced, because she's a pathological optimist bless her, and I try to tell her I'm not getting my hopes up this time because I've thought so many times I found The Vitamin, only to get disappointed. But I was secretly hoping I guess, because I was crushed when they told me it's actually a cyst, and not an issue at all, and doesn't explain any of my symptoms, and they won't take it out.
And, to add insult to injury, the consultant tries to tell me it's good I don't have a tumour. He also sighed when I asked him to explain what condition the cortisol tests he ordered were testing for, and what symptoms that could explain. Excuse me for wanting to know what's going on with my own body I guess 🙄
His answer wasn't even useful. I looked it up after and found it's testing for Cushing's disease, which actually would explain most of my symptoms, plus some I didn't think to tell him about. Why is Google more use than the fucking NHS? It's especially annoying because he mansplained to me what the pituitary gland was and drew a diagram, and I had to sit there being like.
So I feel like I maybe judged the consultant a bit unfairly after the letter I got today with copies of the letters he sent, one to my GP summarising the appointment and the other to the respiratory team referring me for a sleep study.
I felt like his summary was pretty accurate and he didn't downplay the symptoms I reported. If anything he overstated them, saying that I would actually fall over after a shower, when all I said was I was dizzy and needed to lie down. I have to respect him for erring on the side of overstating my case, lol. He also mentioned I was very upset to hear that the pituitary cyst was normal, as I was hoping it would explain my symptoms, so apparently he did actually understand why I wasn't happy about the normal blood results. I didn't feel like he did in the appointment, but actions are more important than a reassuring bedside manner if you can't have both 😅
I still don't think the sleep study will go anywhere, but at least I'll have sleep apnoea officially ruled out. If they rule out wrong diagnoses one by one *eventually* I'll arrive at the right one, right?? Hope springs eternal
So I've done a complete 180 on the consultant 😅 I did indeed misjudge him, I think. I feel a bit bad.
Today I finally managed to have my early morning blood test for cortisol (it was an absolute nightmare from start to finish, but not anyone's fault. I'll spare you the gruesome details) and they got the results super fast. The consultant called about 4 and woke me up from my nap, so I missed the call and saw I got a voicemail. I actually thought it was my therapist as I was expecting a call from her. And since these are all withheld numbers it's a nightmare trying to get back in touch if you miss a call. But then he called back!! They never usually do that!
My cortisol is normal – no surprise there. I suppose I should be glad my blood results are always normal, but it's annoying when you're hoping for some diagnosable treatable condition. But he said he's gonna do a saliva test as well just to make sure, since I'm looking for answers. He's also increasing my thyroid meds slightly even though my TSH is still within normal range, but over the middle of the normal range. I feel like this is really going the extra mile for an NHS consultant. And I can't remember the last time I had someone call me with results when they said they would, let alone the same day I had a test!
Now to figure out what's causing most of the symptoms of Cushing's disease but isn't Cushing's I guess 😅
Been thinking a lot about The Hunger Games again recently so here’s a Katniss 🏹
Had this in my head for a while
I’m not the woman I was a few years ago or even a year ago but I still like to hold her hand and remind her she did her best with what she knew
this reminds me of a computer system we had at my previous job, which allowed an optional "medical condition" to be recorded against each person in the database. if one was entered, you needed to specify whether that condition was stable, worsening, or improving.
however, the list of possible "conditions" was rather broad, and included pregnancy; i was never sure whether "worsening" or "improving" was the correct choice in that case.
Hi! What is your favourite dinosaur and why?
(I saw your post about random asks) 😁
:D ok I actually REALLy love velociraptors -- the actual Velociraptor mongolienses, not the Jurassic Park kind (in Jurassic Park they modeled their raptors after a related species, Deinonychus antirrhopus, and just called them velociraptors because they thought it sounded cooler). Actual velociraptors lived in the Gobi desert of modern Mongolia, and would only have come up to our knee:
They've found fossils with feathered imprints that suggest that velociraptors were pretty heavily feathered, and now that we know that birds are probably just modern dinosaurs descended from theropods (which velociraptors were) I like to think that velociraptors would have a personality similar to a chicken!
A tumblr user after my own heart!! I just sent this message the other day 😂
Have you seen the video with the kitchen scene in Jurassic Park edited to be more accurate? They kept them the same size, but gave them feathers and everything. It was very well done. (Link.) They're Deinonychuses not raptors, as in the film, but close enough.
I do think that accurate-sized Velociraptors attacking you would be just as terrifying irl, but probably would wind up being more of a comedy horror on screen lol. Though tbf there is a crying lack of a comedy horror Jurassic Park parody! I'd watch it.
Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
My deepest darkest fantasy is that I collapse on the street and I am rushed to the hospital. They perform a bunch of tests and find out I am severely deficient in some kind of vitamin. Then I start taking the vitamin and I become the happiest cleverest person alive because all my problems were caused by this one deficiency
Moreover, everyone gathers around to be tremulously compassionate and discreetly admiring: all this time, you lacked the Vitamin? And yet you persevered?
all this talk of Gilbert and Anne has me revisiting their first scene together because from the beginning Gilbert, while immature, demonstrates the sense of integrity that makes him so appealing (also included is the passage that shows how this boy is gone from start)
and then LATER in one of my FAVORITE SCENES:
with the knowledge that these two GET MARRIED, it's just too delightful.
as a child i assumed that martha’s vineyard was a fancy private vineyard owned by martha stewart and the reason rich people vacationed there was because they were friends with martha
