one american thing that confuses me are college application letters. why do you need to write yourself a tragic backstory to go to university, don't you have standardized exams? who's reading through all these bad high schooler essays?
as opposed to someone's essay they wrote when they were 16, which is a permanent immutable window to their soul,
People love to harp on Taylor for shooting a baby that one time but the secret is she was entirely right to shoot that baby. That baby being kidnapped by a guy who's main hobby is "keeping people aware and trapped in horribly painful time loops until long after the sun goes kaput." Every time Purity shows up she takes the time to look directly into the camera and proclaim her love for That Baby Taylor Shot not just as a mother loving her child, but as a Nazi who viewed that baby as the most inherently perfect, pure thing in a horrible world infested with people who weren't white. And she tried to throw that baby out the damn window. Taylor shooting that baby is really just a Purity L she was tangentially involved in cause what do you mean the teenager you tried to blow up two years ago saves your baby better than you do. L. In terms of net suffering prevented, shooting the baby is like the most moral thing she does in the entire book. It's not even in the top twenty most questionable things Taylor did. It's the easiest trolley problem of all time but, sadly, "Taylor shoots a goddamn baby in the head" is really easy to dumb down for casual reference in a way that stuff like "Taylor played chicken with Triumph's life to make his dad agree to argue against the city's condemnation" just isn't. Anyways this is why the marketplace of ideas sucks.

RIP to the legend
This goose fucking rocks and had a crazy life!
I really just have to summarize Thomas's entire life:
He was in a committed relationship with a male swan named Henry for 18-24 years before a female swan named Henrietta showed up and mated with Henry.
Thomas was initially jealous of the pair and attacked them, breaking 2 of the 5 eggs Henrietta had laid. However, once the remaining eggs hatched, Thomas warmed up to them and helped raise them.
Henry couldn't fly because of an injured wing, so Thomas taught the cygnets how to fly.
When they needed to reduce the goose population in the pond where Thomas and the swans lived, they dyed Thomas's feathers red so he wouldn't be separated from Henry.
Henry, Henrietta, and Thomas remained in their happy throuple for years and raised 68 cygnets before Henry died in 2009. After Henry's death, Henrietta found another swan and flew away, leaving Thomas alone.
Thomas finally met and mated with a female goose in 2011 and had his own babies. However, another goose named George stole them and raised them himself.
As Thomas grew elderly and blind, he was relocated to a wildlife center where he raised orphaned cygnets.
His caretaker at the center described him as "pretty high maintenance."
Thomas died in 2018 at the age of around 40. He had a funeral that included a small coffin and a procession that was led by a bagpiper. He was buried under the stone where Henry was buried, the two finally reunited in death.
Before and after his death, Thomas has been celebrated as an icon of the LGBTQ+ community for obvious reasons.
Aw, what a good girl. That’s right, kitten. You’re going to come back to my house and. Wgat was that.
hornet thinks that by refusing ascension and living with mortal bugs she is refusing the divinity her father represented but she doesn't realize that he too shed his larger form to be closer to the ground
She just has to receive 10 more of these before she makes the connection

Rose Tyler goes hiking with Mickey and runs into a trail crew and talks to a random guy in it for like 40 minutes in the middle of their hike because damn what a cool job this guy has!! and he gives her a website to go to to look for jobs and also his number even though mickey is RIGHT THERE and 3 weeks later she’s quit her job with two days of notice and is on a backcountry cut and run job for the next 8 weeks with him
Calls mickey every like month or so and talks for two straight hours about herself and what shes doing without pausing to ask what hes up to and keeps insisting she hasnt DONE ANYTHING with this guy they’re JUST COWORKERS and does not seem to realize that jointly choosing your jobs is kind of doing something.
We just get along super well!! We’re working as bartenders on a cruise ship for the next 3 weeks also and after that we’re going backcountry again wit- (Mickey voice On A Cruise Ship Where?) oh in the Caribbean. (Mickey voice wh… whats the housing situation.) ohhh Well we were thinking about sharing a room rent will be cheaper yknow? Nooo no separate beds of course of course (had not actually discussed that yet) (Or even thought about discussing it)
they break up eventually (thank god . mickey girl STAND UP) because even someone as kind and loving and patient as mickey is can only handle their girlfriend cavorting around the globe with a strange man for so long with an end date that keeps getting pushed into the next century before snapping. they do manage to stay friends through sheer willpower so people keep asking poor mickey like what the actual fuck rose is up to. he doesnt know he never knows please stop asking. "surely she tells you-" oh yeah she tells me. that doesnt mean i understand.
she posts on her instagram once ever month or so w a 50 post barrage of every photo she took in the last month. one post is captioned "places i have peed" and none of them are toilets. she has never posted a picture of That Man but the photos of her are very clearly taken by someone else and they frequently feature the corner of someone elses osprey bag or a mans hand or the caption says "we". and people keep asking mickey if shes soft-launching her new boyfriend. hes like one day she might even figure that out.
rose and That Man get married for tax bennies about a year later, have a threesome with their project partner jack harkness 6 months later, and 8 months after THAT actually start dating.
Explaining homestuck isn't hard and doesn't take ten thousand paragraphs to do y'all just don't know how to summarize things.
Homestuck is a webcomic where there is a multiplayer video game called Sburb which is a standard component of reality itself. Sburb, when played, destroys your original universe and transports you to a liminal place called a Land where the goal is to create a new universe and reality. Because all the realities are made by previous players of the video game, there's a large cast that follows multiple timelines/realities. Because all of this is also a video game, there are some bugs/hacks/glitches. Much of the later plot of Homestuck revolves around trying to glitch reality in a way to kill an unkillable glitched final boss to save and fix the timelines/realities which were all glitched to being unplayable/unwinnable because of it. There are a variety of mediums in which the story is told and the guy from Undertale did a lot of the music for it.
Yes, because that's not explaining Homestuck, that's writing a book report. This is what I mean when I say people don't know how to summarize.
I don't think I'd call that "explaining homestuck" then, though. There is more to a story than the world it's set in.
You don't need to explain the concept of Jujus, galaxy frogs, classpects, and x2 planar defenestration combos to explain Homestuck. Overexplaining is actively counterproductive to what an explanation should be, which is to make someone understand the bones of something.
Also, I don't want to spoil people! Homestuck is a genuinely cool webcomic that I think handles itself really fascinatingly well and I would rather give the above explanation which doesn't immediately overload them with shit like ectobiological theory and lets them come across it at their own pace.
Explaining the narrative is an entirely different ballpark than explaining the concept of Homestuck. And explaining the narrative isn't explaining Homestuck: it's giving a book report.
lost me in the first sentence homie
That's your problem with reading comprehension then my dude, not my problem with clarity.
"Homestuck is a webcomic where there is a multiplayer video game called Sburb which is a standard component of reality itself," Isn't as digestible as you seem to think it is. I mean, I'm sure it makes perfect sense to someone who has read Homestuck, but to anyone who hasn't, that's a huge suspension of disbelief to come right out the gate with.
My dude, I have some real bad news about any and all stories ever told and suspensions of disbelief about them. This is literally a you problem.
just another portentous day in Ecruteak
Saw this on Pinterest but wanted to share bc actually I have had a physio recommend this to me and it’s been amazing!
Walking backwards strengths the muscles around your knee (esp the quadriceps, which you will definitely feel if you do this) but doesn’t put the same strain on the joint as forward walking or running. It’s very good for your balance, coordination and patellar tracking, all important to reduce knee pain, support your knees and can help rehab knee injuries.
I do it on a gym treadmill, usually at 1.2 km/h (but I’ve seen anywhere from 0.8-1.6 km/h recommended, which is like 0.5-1.0 mph for the Americans). You can start with a very slight incline and then slowly increase it 5% as you get more comfortable, and to help engage the muscles. I usually do this for 5 to 10 minutes, 3-4 times a week. My understanding is that you can also do it outside, either on flat or sloped ground, because just walking backwards itself is useful as hell (the incline is just useful to engage muscles more as you get more used to it)
If you have even a spare 20 minutes a week, this is seriously useful to support your knees, because there is nothing worse than injuring one
