Hey I wrote this post a couple years ago! It was for a discussion about emotional labor and the lie that relationships are hard work.

The month before he didn’t buy me a Snickers, we completely ignored my birthday because he ranted about how pathetic it is when girls want presents just for aging. I was a Cool Girl so I agreed that my birthday is unimportant. Then the week before he didn’t buy me a Snickers, we celebrated his birthday for 7 days straight at his request and at considerable time and financial cost to myself. Then he didn’t buy me a Snickers.

We obviously didn’t like each other, but when you’re 18/19 years old and all you’ve ever heard is that you’re not supposed to like your partner and relationships take so much work to maintain, then you assume your shitty relationship is healthy. Don’t be like that. The only hard relationships are with people you don’t like.

Honestly though, it’s the little things that make a relationship. It shows that they are thinking about you, even during the mundane parts of their day. That they said to themselves “hey, so and so loves this soft drink that is near me while I’m waiting in line at the store, I should get it for them.” I don’t think I could ever grab a candy for myself, to get in a car with someone I care about who I know would want one too, and not get them anything. It’s just decency. It shows that you care. Maybe I am crazy, but I truly think stuff like this does matter. It shouldn’t be the make or break of a relationship, but it should show who the person really is, and how much they care about you or think about you. So see how many unannounced candy bars they get you, or how many random flowers they pick, or how many times they make your favorite dinner without you asking just because they know you like it. Measure your relationships on things like that.
