Mordecai x Rigby (Rewritten AU) Mini Fic (Comedy, Angst)
Title: “Double Sloppy Cheese”
“Dude! Check it!” Rigby’s voice yelled out, barging into the kitchen while holding up a brown bag dripping grease from the bottom, looking at it as if it was the most magical thing he ever saw, stirring Mordecai right awake from his slumber at the table, before grumbling as he laid his head back in his arms, as if they didn’t fight intergalactic time babies, or crazy arcade demons.
At least that was what Mordecai thought as he watched the raccoon stumble over his feet before reaching the kitchen table, dropping the bag before the blue bird, his eyes looking up the raccoon looking at him expectantly. Mordecai yawned as he sat up, pushing back his ruffled feathers with his wings, before his eyes laid heavy on Rigby. “Dude, what is that?” The raccoon wiggled his eyebrows, a small cheeky grin growing on his chubby face. “Why I am so glad you asked, Mordo~”
Before dramatically pulling away the bag, revealing two wrapped… burgers? “Dude-“ “Wait! Before you shoot it down!” Rigby moved his stubby paws quickly, unwrapping the foil with slight haste to reveal a sandwich with cheese stretching off the wrapper, and the red meaty sauce slipping off the bread and into the table, steam radiating from the messy thing of a sandwich.
“It’s the Double Sloppy Cheese Deal at that new burger joint! That 2 for 5 deal? I was in the cart looking for something you’d like to actually eat and-”
Mordecai remembered it, the raccoon kept mentioning it to him every time he saw the commercial on the TV, or a ad on the computer. Originally it was annoying, then again, a lot of things Rigby did tended to be that, but one way or another, he’d find his way to drag Mordecai in his activities.
‘God, why is he like this?’ He thought to himself, though despite himself, his eyes focused on the way the raccoon moved his arms, and spoke so excitedly about this stupid sandwich, how he just ‘had to try it out’… He couldn’t help himself but to grow a lazy smile.
“Okay okay, I’ll try it out.”
“Really?” The raccoon stilled a bit, his eyebrows slightly raised, before a big toothy grin grew on his face. “Ooooooo yeah!” Mordecai’s tired eyes softened just a bit as he let out a small ‘heheh’ grabbing the unwrapped sandwich, while the raccoon took a nice big bite out of it, getting cheese and sauce dripping down the corners of his mouth. “Oh my god, man… this is the best.” “Dude, you’re gonna make a mess if you eat it like that.” Commented Mordecai, eyeing the raccoon, then the sandwich in his wings, his eyes narrowing before taking a sniff at it. “Mordo, you’re acting like it’s gonna bite you.” Mordecai’s eyes then drifted over to Rigby with a small huff.
“It’s dripping all over man-“ “Thats what she said-“ “Shut uuuuuuup.” The bird groaned out as the raccoon snickered. But then, for a moment, the kitchen went quiet as Rigby bit down on his sandwich, and Mordecai just stared at his. It should of been simple, just bite or two. Just to keep appearances.
“Dude?” Rigby slowly looked up at the bird across from him, watching as he sluggishly laid the sandwich back down on the table. “I’m sorry man, I’m just not that hungry…” “Mordecai-“ He raised a wing up to Rigby’s face. “Dude don’t worry about it, I’ll eat something later.”
Rigby’s snout scrunched up slightly, his lips pressed tightly into a straight line.
“Youve been saying that for two days now man, come on.”
The bird stiffened slightly at that, his jaw working his teeth together as his eyes kept themselves away from a stare that felt like daggers to his heart. “Rigby-“ “Dude no. Don’t. Okay?” Rigby sat up from his seat, his arms bracing on the table. “Just…. Just eat. Okay? I know how you get sometimes and…I don’t want to see you like that, man. It’s sad!…” The bird huffed as he looked down at his own wings, fiddling with the feathers while Rigby just stared at him.
“Dude.” “…” “Dude, look at me.” “...” “Mordecai-“
“Rigby, I’m just not hungry, back off! I’ll figure it out when, but honestly you can’t really talk much! As if you’re doing any better than I am! If you can ever be that! So let me figure it out and just… lay off!” He threw his wings up as he shouted at Rigby, finally looking into the raccoon’s eyes, and the frustration that had grown simply started to melt away, seeing he raccoon stand firmly in place. “… Ya know. You can be so stupid sometimes.” Mordecai’s feathers ruffled in a instance.
Mordecai was not aware his beak could close so quickly, nor had he ever heard Rigby shout that loud. “You’re not going to sit here, and act like I don’t understand how you feel, like you are so misunderstood when you know Ive been here with you from day one! If you are upset, then, god, Im sorry, Mordecai, Im sorry your life sucks ass because you dropped out, that youre pissed that your stuck here with me! But this!? This was my only option! After…. After…”
The air suddenly felt suffocating as the bird looked away once again, letting Rigby have a moment to turn away and breathe deeply, rubbing his eyes furiously… then finally turning back to Mordecai with a small scowl, and wet eyes, “But you don’t get to be a asshole about it, dude! You don’t get to treat me anyway you want just because you’re hurt!”
And in that moment, Rigby caught up in a whirlwind of emotions, he slammed his hand down on the table, smashing the sandwich he wanted Mordecai to eat, getting the cheese and sauce on the table, the floor, in Mordecai’s feathers, and caught in Rigby’s fur- “Ah! Damn it!” Rigby threw his hands up as he turned away towards the doorway, while Mordecai looked down at the mess scattered in his chest feathers in disgust. “Ugh! Dude!” Before letting out a sigh, running his face through his hands. “Damn….” He peered through his fingers, looking down at the sloppy joe he left untouched, feeling that… guilty feeling that always sat low in his gut when he hurt Rigby’s feelings.
He didn’t really mean to… he just…. Ugh.
