Nextworld 1563 Monster Hunters
Work has begun on the newest Nextworld supplement.
Aria Swiftblade, "diplomat, courier, and envoy, at your service." College of Whispers bard with a Spy background, Aria buys and sells information, but always to further The Mission. There's always a price (a girl's gotta eat), but she'll only sell to the good-aligned orgs.
Character portrait of a blue-skinned tiefling with blue hair and blue eyes, wearing a broad-brimmed hat. BG3 character engine used to create D&D character token.
My son did the heavy lifting on this one because town maps hurt my brain, but we have a map of Gulliver's Gulch for my Nextworld campaign.
Nextworld Progress
First drafts written for 5e and SWADE: Nextworld 1563 Core Setting Guide, Guide to Animal Companions, Guide to Familiars, The Nightmare Islands Core Setting Guide, and a Tier 1 (Rank Novice) Nextworld 1563 adventure. Working on finishing the Tier 1 Nightmare Islands adventure.
Works in Progress but up to date for both rule sets: Nextworld 1563 Beastiary and a Guide to Magic Items. Written for 5e but not for SWADE yet: Nextworld 1563 Tier 2 adventure. The Nextworld 1563 campaign is outlined all the way to 20.
Nextworld 1563 Progress
I had to start over for some small sections but I think the results were worth it. I now have test-ready rules for 5e & SWADE versions of Nextworld 1563. Cleaning up the Tier 1 Into the Far Reaches 5e adventure then I'll adapt it to SWADE. Nightmare Islands next then PF2e stuff.
Nextworld Adventure
Going to be running my Nextworld horror adventure this evening. I estimate 1-2 sessions left on this adventure, after which we will be switching over to the SWADE version. Happy to report my players have really enjoyed the world so far, so hope to see that continue.
Nextworld Plans
The current iteration of Nextworld is mostly 5e-adjacent with some PF2e stuff mixed in around my own ideas. I think I'm going to rework the classes to be a bit more 5e and trim out the PF2e stuff then write a separate version that is PF2e compatible. That will give 3 versions.
Coming along nicely on the SWADE version. First draft of the mechanics is done. Adding in the lore and flavor elements that are mostly written from the 5e version, but also adding to those to make it more thematically complete. I want to make each setting stand out a bit more.
Nextworld 1563, the setting that introduces everything. AU Earth with elfs and orcs etc, set in an arcane punk version of the 16th century. The first period of prolonged peace in nearly 2000 years has ushered in an era of exploration and exploitation, but dangers still lurk.
The Nightmare Islands, a horror supplement being written concurrently with 1563 but meant to be usable attached to any Nextworld setting. Think something like the Domains of Dread but for Nextworld.
Nextworld 1878, a steampunk Western centered around cattle wars and outlaw gangs. The European conquest of the New World never happened here, but that doesn't mean everything worked out fine. New dangers and new explorations await.
Goblins by Gaslight, set concurrently with 1878 but back over in Londinium where we began. Using the Forged in the Dark system, we play as goblin gangs pulling heists and committing crimes in their ongoing quest for equal rights and a place to call home.
Nextworld 1936 and Nextworld 2019 are still very rough outlines but essentially a diesel punk setting of a world getting ready for war as horrors from the Nightmare Islands creep in and a cyberpunk setting after the world has fallen apart and been rebuilt.
Lots of writing ahead! Plans should keep me busy for the foreseeable future and, knowing me, I'll revise them many times along the way. We'll see what happens. Hope you'll follow along.
Nextworld Ancestry Edges
In the 5e-adjacent version of Nextworld, I used feats to add things like tieflings and assimar (you are an ancestry modified by a "born," "legacy," or "touched" heritage). Currently seeing if I can make the same idea fit into SWADE'S Edges.
Nextworld 1673 SWADE Ancestries
Nextworld 1673 ancestries as expressed in the SWADE system.
And because I haven't yet shown the descriptions of the Nightmare Island ancestries, we'll include those here.
Savage Nextworld
Noodling ideas for applying Savage Worlds to Nextworld. I can add my ancestries and lore, and run SWADE and Deadlands, almost RAW. I think I want to do some tweaking ( don't agree that all ranged weapons use the same Shooting skill, for example), but I honestly don't see much.
streaming companies will say um we're increasing your subscription fee. no password sharing. no screenshots allowed. please subscribe to a separate channel for this movie and another for this tv show. free trial but put in your card details so we can charge you if you forget to cancel. this title is a rental only that's 4.99 please. this title is not available in your region. you are begging people to torrent at this point Like ye are off the edge of the map matey here there be pirates argh argh argh 🦜☠️
Do people just type on this site? I'm new(ish) here and still figuring things out but, aside from occasional maps, typing is what I do. It's mostly all I know how to share. I tell stories, in different forms, and I enjoy stories, in different forms. Sci-fi, fantasy, horror, comics, prose, movies, TTRPGs, etc etc.
Hi there! My name's Ian, and I'm a Twitter refugee who enjoys and creates geeky entertainments. LGBT+ member and supporter (he/they), music lover, and likely to get angry over certain political "opinions" (they're never just opinions, but you probably already knew that).
Also, if you need a picture, Ducky and Reed say Hi.
So let's talk about this for a minute.
First of all, how do you think Pride events fund themselves and stay free for attendees? O.o Vendor fees aren't all of it - a lot of money comes from sponsors - but like... we paid $1300 to vend at Seattle Pride this year. That's the money that pays the people who work to make Pride happen. That is not free. Pride as an event does not just magically happen. A lot of people work really hard to make Pride happen and to clean up after it.
We're a small trans-owned company and 100% of our employees are trans & queer. We jokingly refer to Pride as "Gay Christmas". The money we make during Pride means we stay open, Pride events get vendor fees, and our employees get paid for the rest of the year. This company does not exist without Pride events. The only reason we survived as a company during COVID is because my wife has a stable, good IT job.
This shit isn't free to do. It does not just magically happen. Performers need to get paid. Tech crew needs to get paid. Equipment needs to be rented for performers. Stages need to be rented. Electrical services need to be paid for so food can happen. Ice and water cost money. Trash pickup costs money.
A lot of people volunteer and donate, but festivals and big community events? They cost money, and the money we pay to be able to vend is part of how Pride events happen. Without that, small queer businesses like @nerdykeppie don't survive and the only people putting their money in to make this happen, AND MONEY NEEDS TO CHANGE HANDS FOR EVENTS TO HAPPEN, are Smirnoff and fucking Wells Fargo.
For fuck's sake. Y'all want small queer businesses, but you really don't want us to actually survive, do you?
I think that commenter is confused about what rainbow capitalism actually is.
Rainbow capitalism is when uncaring corporations blast rainbow things on their products to get queers to buy them, while not actually doing anything to help queer people. Rich cishets getting millions of off a minority group.
Meanwhile, in regards to nerdykeppie? A small business owned by queer people, that makes products for the queer community that the people involved are a part of. Buying their stuff is supporting the queer community, which is a GOOD thing to happen during pride month.
And for fuck's sake, where else are we supposed to find things that help us proclaim who we are if not by buying them from independent queer-run businesses? I mean, I've got a shirt that tells people I'm a genderqueer bisexual Star Trek nerd, and I promise you Target isn't going to sell that- but when I emailed NerdyKeppie about the possibility of getting one of their designs done for that, I literally got an email back an hour later saying "Here you go, it's up on the website to buy it." Shouting down people making a living by giving the community what it wants and needs is just not a helpful way to do anything.
Buying queer swag, not buying queer swag, and selling queer swag all have absolutely no impact on whether or not you ARE QUEER.
You can be queer and never buy a single queer-coded item. Queer merchants, artists, performers, none of them are getting in the way of you being queer.
If you want that queer swag, art, advertising "hey I'm queer and very visibly so", you aren't entitled to free access to the hundreds or thousands of hours that went into that merchant/artist/etc getting good at making that thing you want.
Buying that art, swag, music, services, all of it, from queer providers asking for a living wage in return instead of saving some bucks buying a cheap knock-off from a big company that loves our profitability and absolutely nothing else, that is what the fight against "rainbow capitalism" is all about.
changing elves from being assholes with a superiority complex and recharacterising them as just sort of weird guys that have an entirely different set of social behaviours to harken back to the days when people thought autistic people were a kind of fae for having odd behaviours. the entire reason why they dont particularly enjoy gatherings of men or dwarves or whatever is because they tend to be loud and the average elven social gathering is just a bunch of them sitting in a room in silence ignoring each other
like theyre still kind of mean but its more of them being blunt and lacking empathy rather than being condescending or purposefully malicious
my elven ass after spending 45 minutes in the pub with my dwarf friends:
I GROW WEARY OF MIMICKING YOUR OBNOXIOUS MANNERISMS TO ACCOMMODATE FOR THIS ENVIRONMENT. I WISH TO RETURN TO MY CHAMBERS TO REST AND SO I MAY PLAY SPLATOON 3 ON THE NINTENDO SWITCH. WE SHALL GATHER AGAIN NEXT HALF MOON AND I SHALL TELL YOU OF MY VICTORIES.
them:
okay man take care
you understand my vision
See, when I tell you my nickname is Elf, this is closer to why. This is how I always saw them and I never liked the condescending and superiority complex version.
Hi Elon: please add a decreasing counter bar in the corner of the screen so I know how many posts left I can view. Because having a health bar on twitter would be the only funny thing you can do right now
Looks like Elmo still hasn't moved everything and still has to limit his users. Today's lie is that their common, every day activity looks like spam. Wonder what half-baked excuse he'll trot out tomorrow when no one believes this one either.
They are not as high-profile as the WGA, but I would like to bring everyone's attention to the imminent strike action by thousands of hotel workers in Los Angeles. They are set to go on strike tomorrow, July 1st, 2023.
More than 15,000 hotel workers are seeking higher pay, better benefits, and working conditions. This includes an across-the-board $5 an hour raise, as well as affordable healthcare and better pensions. They also are seeking a ban on the use of E-Verify, which is used to deny employment to undocumented workers and workers involved with the criminal justice system. You can follow what is happening at their Twitter.

I really don’t understand anyone who still posts selfies at this point like. we’re all fully aware that the feds are monitoring us and using our photos to build a surprise database that will help them later it’s just not fucking worth it anymore
Human brain: security culture
Monkey brain: validation nice
I will Not be cockblocked by spy nimrod fucks
I haven’t ever really talked about this before but I’d like to introduce a concept that I’m going to call “security nihilism.”
Here’s the deal: You’re already burned.
It’s over! There’s no going back! Your face is in a database and your DNA is in a database and your social profile is in a database and there’s nothing you can do about it. Even if you didn’t put it there somebody else did. Congrats, we’re all fucked!
Facebook builds shadow profiles on people who don’t have accounts. Surveillance cameras are everywhere. Your cousin signed up for Ancestry and your brother did 23&Me.
So what can you do about it? Essentially nothing. So there’s no point in panicking.
You know what you have to do if you want some kind of privacy? Start leaving your phone at home randomly. Or at work randomly. People don’t think about the fact that their cell phone’s location data (which is constantly tracking even if you don’t enable location data for apps) is a more effective way of tracking them than anything they post online and it’s *real* easy to get a warrant for that data. And if you suddenly ditch your phone for the first time in several months it’s suspicious as FUCK.
Automated license plate readers track your drive. Do you commute? Do you drive the same way every day? Why the sudden change to your routine? What were you doing that you needed to park your car and wander away suddenly? What are you hiding?
Complaining about people posting selfies when companies are compiling DNA databases sharing them with the FBI is like blaming ocean pollution on people using plastic straws when about half of plastic ocean trash is abandoned fishing equipment.
Do you use gmail? You’re fucked.
Do you have a bank account? You’re fucked.
Do you use public transportation? You’re fucked.
Do you go to school? You’re fucked.
Do you have a job? You’re fucked.
I had to track down a guy who didn’t have facebook or social media profiles, didn’t have a listing in the phonebook, didn’t have a linkedin. I started with his first and last name and ended with his supervisor’s phone number, a ten year history of his income, and his home address. I got to it through his son’s little league team.
And I’m fucking J. Random Nobody. I don’t even have shiny databases full of tracking data.
So you’re already burned. There’s no going back, we passed the tipping point. Even if you threw out your computer and shut down all your accounts and smashed your cell phone and lived in the woods there’d be video of you walking out of town for the last time and satellite images of wherever you ended up setting up camp.
I was never going to be able to hide from the cameras on the streets and the data in my cell phone and the scanners that look at the license plate of my car and the information that my school sold about my age and income and interests. So fuck it. Share a selfie.
[fyi the secret to actual opsec is to trust no one and to have no discernible patterns - being in a facial recognition database doesn’t matter if you make a point of not showing your face when you’re doing whatever you’re doing that you want to keep quiet; your goal isn’t to evade the facial recognition software as you’re on the run from the government, your goal is to never even show up on their radar]
Sorry folks, all of this is right. Getting judgmental at other people’s selfies and masking it as an opsec fail is just ignorant :D
As a security professional;
Yep. Correct.
Yep, 100% my thought every time I see someone doing the paranoia shaming. You're already out there and there's nothing you can do about it. Pick the battles you can win and enjoy life otherwise.
