I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.

It just like... look. If your religion has an explicit instruction of belief that it needs to take every other religion out there in the world, wipe them out, and replace them with itself, that religion is xenophobic. And the people who engage in the fulfillment of that process are xenophobic. It might not be as explicitly nasty a xenophobia as ethnic genocide, but it's still an instruction to commit cultural genocide.

If I say "I'm Jewish and I hate the ideas of missionaries because historically they created pogroms and ghettoes and started genocides multiple times," and your response is "I hate all religions equally," which INCLUDES Judaism, what you're actually saying is "those people were bad but they should have succeeded."

Yeah, I was raised to believe in Christianity, and then when I asked my parents if people who'd never heard of Jesus would go to hell, my (former missionary) mother said she didn't think so. And I was like eight, but I still was like "so, why would you tell anyone if all it does is put them in danger of going to hell?"

I never got a satisfactory answer to that one.

I do know my Mom managed to do SOME good during her missionary work, though. She helped a high school girl get away from the teacher who'd knocked her up.

But, like... individual good acts by individual missionaries doesn't undo the structural problems with cultural genocide. No matter how many schools or clinics they build, no matter how many wells they dig... yeah, those things are good. But why are you only willing to help people if they fall in line with your religion?
