Karin or "Gaya", she/they, bi/pan/queer, married to my wife, Swedish by birth, living in the US. Born 1986, remembering to update on a schedule is hard, I trust that you can do the math.
I'm not going to police ages, but be adviced that I use foul language, occasionally partake in some legal intoxicants, and am bad at tagging (this is pretty stream-of-consciousness most of the time).
This blog is just whatever floats my boat. Linguistics, social justice (with a plethora of anti-capitalist rants), a whole bunch of fandoms, etc etc. Sometimes I write stuff, too. Maybe some day I'll find the energy to start a side blog or two and break things up, but for now, it's all here. Inconsistent posting schedule, beware. Some more details on my about page.
TERFs, White Supremacists, MRAs, Homophobes, and all others spreading that kind of bigotry and hate are not welcome here.
Other than that, feel free to interact with me! ๐๐ Use the ask box if you want, or tag me, or whatever. I promise to gently/kindly inform you if you're being annoying (which you're honestly probably not as long as you're interacting in good faith). ๐ If you just want to like or reblog a single post from me, feel free. ๐ If you want to spend an afternoon reading and liking and reblogging whatever, even old posts - please do! ๐ If you feel the need to correct me on something; please, in general - assume that I did not intentionally cause offense (unless I write something like "offense intended", or use a term like "asshole", in which case I probably did mean to cause offense, and expect you'll interact with me as such), and be kind as you correct me. ๐ฅบ๐ ๐๐ Feel free to follow if you want to, and just start talking to me if you want to be mutuals. I'm generally pretty nice.
Hey, I don't have all that many followers, but enough where I don't blindly follow back when someone follows me. I tend however to follow people back if I see them responding to posts I reblogged, even if it's just fun tag commentary, so I guess what I'm saying is this:
If you want to be my mutual, just feel free to go for it. I don't get annoyed because we don't yet know each other (I'm on this site because I need a social outlet, and this is the least vile of the social media platforms - I'm open to making friends!). You can reblog/like whatever you want from me. I just like to share my thoughts and hear other people's thoughts in return. And, you know, I want good faith debates where we at least try not to assume the worst about each other from the get-go.
So, like... hit me up? If you want to? No pressure.
Nine rings were made for men. Seven for the dwarves, three for the elves, and one for the big guy himself. One, three, seven, nine. There is but a set of five missing to complete the sequence of odd numbers. I propose that this missing set of rings of power was gifted to a mysterious someone by their true love, along with a partridge in a pear tree (among other things). In this essay I will-
I think that would be so much funny. He wakes up on a remote beach in Jamaica and he only speaks/understands Brythonic and Medieval Latin. Locals assume he was a tourist who fell from a cruise ship or received a head injury and floated away from a resort. The authorities cannot match his description to any missing persons reports and his fingerprints and DNA produce no hits on INTERPOL. They suspect he may be Welsh or French because the language he speaks resembles Welsh or Breton but France and the UK both state he is not a citizen of their country. Stateless and deeply confused, he is taken in by the community near the beach where he was found, being cared for by a number of local families and doing odd jobs. He slowly learns English and adjusts to the contemporary world, uncertain if his belief that he is the legendary King Arthur was formed by whatever traumatic event caused him to end up Jamaica or if he is actually King Arthur and Prydain is in eminent peril. Mysterious letters from Morgan begin to reaffirm his belief he is King Arthur. He must choose between staying in Jamaica and continuing the happy life he has made for himself or finding a way to get back to Britain without any documentation.
He gets to Britain and everyone expects him to sound like a posh noble Englishman because that is the picture Malory painted but he prefers to speak Welsh and when he has to speak English, he speaks with a thick Jamaican accent.
The existence of Ancalagon is horrifying in every way. To anything and everything he encounters and for himself.
Ancalagon is an anomaly. Far too large to live in any meaningful way. He was born to die in the War of Wrath and to take as much of the world with him as he could.
He is created from thousands of parts. He is erratic, fragmented. He is constantly in agony.
Dozens, perhaps hundreds died in his development. Elven thralls who were forced to aid in and die for the creation of a weapon meant to destroy their homes and people. Those some of his parts came from. Those who simply got too close.
Bones fracture when his wings expand, acrid blood falls from the sky, staining the rocks of Thangorodrim, long before Eรคrendil lands a single wound to him
His flesh and bones poison the earth, the sky, the water.
His entire existence is cruel and sad and painful and destructive.
This is very funny to me, because back in the day I hung out with a guy whose online nickname was Ancalagon, and we even met in person a few times because we lived nearby, and he was so aggressively normal that I had complete separated the name from the dragon.
huge fan of the depth of a good purple but another area that draws me is definitely around aquamarine/turquoise/seafoam. you can not go wrong once the green starts getting just a tinge more blue. a gal could certainly do worse than to pull over there and stay a while
can you imagine you wake up one day in a dark room chained to a radiator with your phone at 1% and you unlock it and find that you've been added to this community
No matter how progressive or well-read you are, there are always going to be moments in your life where somebody pushes back against something that's so culturally ingrained you never even considered it before. And you'll say "Huh, it never occurred to me to challenge this but you're right" and that doesn't mean you were "morally toxic" before, it means you're a non-omniscient human capable of growth.
hyperfixating on a fictional woman who went underdeveloped in canon is literally FUN and the 80-90% of fandom people who only do the same for background character men have no idea of the degree to which they are fucking missing out
hour 1 of thinking about an underdeveloped woman: idk it would've been nice if she had more screentime
hour 100 of thinking about an underdeveloped woman: ok but despite having only eight lines of dialogue she is literally THE most interesting nuanced and tragic character in the entire series and these writers had no idea what they even had. how is no one else seeing this it's literally so objectively obvious
The government says destroying his own data during an airport interrogation was illegal.
In early 2025, Atlanta resident Samuel Tunick was on his way home following a trip abroad. After landing in the US, customs agents demanded access to his Pixel phone, which was running an alternative version of Android called GrapheneOS. Rather than hand over his data, Tunick used a clever feature of the software to delete everything. Now, heโs facing federal charges.
The first hearing in this case happened last week, according to The Guardian, during which government attorneys and agents claimed that Tunick was subjected to a standard secondary interrogation at an international airport. During that encounter, agents were โlooking for anything thatโs prohibited.โ However, Tunickโs legal team alleges he was targeted for his activism.
Tunick was involved with a group called Defend the Atlanta Forest, which opposed the construction of an enormous law enforcement training facility in the area often known as Cop City. What Tunick didnโt know, according to his lawyers, was that heโd been placed on a watch list for his actions and that Customs and Border Protection had discussed over email plans to detain him upon his arrival back in the US for โsuspected terrorism activities.โ
This seems like exactly the sort of thing the 1st and 4th amendments were supposed to protect. To prevent the government from harassing and persecuting citizens peacefully seeking redress of grievances.
Proposal for anyone working in library systems (or, I suppose, general book distribution):
I would like more serious Web Comic Conservation efforts! So many have gone/went on for so long, was a daily part of life (until Google fucked us all over by taking away Reader (yes, I know about and use The Old Reader to follow the RSS feeds that are still going).
But like. I'm really afraid of some of these comics being erased from the records of time. And just. I know y'all have probably already had discussions about it. But maybe it's just not a top priority
So maybe I'm just calling for more people to care about this issue enough to keep it going.
And, you know, to get the ball rolling: give me your links to your favorite web comics. If nothing else, we can do private conservation efforts.
The main ones I currently am following and have been following for years:
xkcd, Questionable Content. I feel like everyone I overlap with online knows about these two, but I don't know, maybe people don't. The former is THE Stick Figure Comic of Our Age one, and the second one is THE Ongoing Romantic Sit-Com With Robot Shenanigans Comic of Our Age one.
