That's it. This completely kills election integrity in The United States. I don't know if this makes us a dictatorship now, but it sure feels like it does. Unless I'm misunderstanding this.
The Supreme Court recently voted to allow the President to fire commissioners of independent agencies. Trump then turns around and fires all of the members of the Election Assistance Commission. Now, the EAC can't function until new commissioners get appointed.
The Election Assistance Commission is the agency that accredits our voting systems, and maintain our mail-in-voting requirements. The administration is likely going to either leave the Commission unstaffed, or pack the seats with loyalists.
They just keep chip chip chipping away at it. I don't think they realize that it's load bearing.
From Reuters:
The 2002 law states the president can appoint replacements to the commission, but it is unclear how Trump will move ahead with the commission.
Senator Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat, said in a Thursday social media post the terminations should "concern every American, regardless of party."
"Removing every remaining commissioner just months before the 2026 midterm elections is an extraordinary step that demands an immediate explanation from the administration and raises profound concerns about political interference in the institutions that support our elections," Warner said.
