Chances are you probably watched this movie in your history class and now you’re obssessed with it. Blog for the 1989 movie Glory, as well as sometimes the actual regiment. Stick around for everything fun :>
Hello everyone! My name is Asher, but you can call me Ash, any pronouns are fine. I run this blog solely because I am a nerd and a literal fanatic for this movie. After being obssessed with this film for like two months, I was sorely disappointed to find out that there weren’t any active blogs or a community surrounding this film. It’s an awesome movie (I’m sure you knew that, that’s probably why you’re here!) and it definitely deserves a ton of content for it. Every fandom starts with an awesome blog, no?
I’ll be reblogging posts I have found, as well as posting some of my own stuff. Topics will vary, but all of them fun. Trust…
I’ll probably update this as my blog grows, so this’ll be pinned for easy access. For now, thanks for visiting and of course, onward! 💙
It's almost insane to me that this blog of mine will be turning 2 years old in a few months...I originally made this blog with the "support" of an old friend who I don't associate with anymore. I still like Glory, but I just really forget about this blog. Maybe I should just open submissions or something, anything to keep it alive?
Here's a good deleted scene, The Apple Picker! (it's my favorite.) It's quite hard to listen to, so I'll put a transcription below the cut as putting the captions into the video myself was kinda hard (i dont have editing software)
RAWLINS: Get your heads out now. You challenge me soldier, if I ain't got the right password you bust a cap and you ask questions later.
[RAWLINS, SHARTS, and TRIP look out into the distance.]
RAWLINS: There's booger bears over there boys, right over there. You smell that? Ain't eat nothing but corn for dinner. That means he's hungry. Now if you don't keep a sharp lookout...he might just come and get 'ya.
[RAWLINS leaves as TRIP steps up and stands next to SHARTS, attentively looking out into the distance.]
TRIP: Man, listen to them guns, huh? It's like they won't ever let up.
[Shot of the misty and rainy forest.]
TRIP (to SHARTS): Hey buck, what you say we go on out there and eh, see what's what?
SHARTS (stuttering): N-n-not me.
TRIP: You scared?
SHARTS: No.
TRIP: Come on.
[TRIP walks forward as SHARTS follows behind, looking back behind him occasionally. The two of them approach and crouch to the side of a tree.]
SHARTS (unsure): M-m-maybe we should go back over there. L-let's go.
TRIP: Shh. Get down.
[TRIP cocks his rifle and aims it out. There are two small figures in the distance, walking.]
TRIP: I got him in my sights. Should I do it?
TRIP (quietly): Got him [n****, alright?].
[TRIP shoots the rifle and immediately, the figure to the right staggers and falls as the other figure flees.]
SHARTS (shocked and surprised): Sh-sh-shoot—you got one!
[TRIP and SHARTS immediately run out to where the soldier was shot. SHARTS, following behind, looks back.]
SHARTS (out loud): W-w-we got one!
[A voice in the background yells out "We got one!" TRIP and SHARTS approach the body.]
UNIDENTIFIED VOICE: Damn it, you're not supposed to shoot the pickets unless they shoot first!
TRIP (defensive): Well we got one!
SHARTS: Shit.
[TRIP turns the body over. It is a young Confederate soldier. He is blond and clean-cut. Dead, blood has spilled out of his mouth and runs down the right side of his face. TRIP stares at the body with an almost speechless energy. Beside him, SHARTS looks around as the other soldiers run behind them.]
UNNAMED UNION SOLDIER: Damn Judas, an apple picker. About fifteen years old. (To TRIP) Nice shooting.
[The UNNAMED UNION SOLDIER leaves as more others come to inspect the situation, including RAWLINS.]
TRIP (uneasy): Hey, he alive! (to the body) Hey, come on boy, come on.
UNKNOWN VOICE: I'm sure he'll be fine.
OTHER VOICE: Yeah, he'll be alright.
TRIP, attempting to wake the dead soldier: Hey. Hey boy. Hey. Hey boy!
RAWLINS: Trip. (quietly) He's gone. (He looks up and then back) Come on, we best get on out of here.
[RAWLINS and SHARTS get up, leaving TRIP with the body.]
CULLENS: Colonel Shaw, 10th Connecticut is being flanked!
COLONEL SHAW: Cullens! Have the regiment formed and ready to move with all haste.
[They exchange a verbal sound of understanding and depart.]
RAWLINS: [Sound?] assembly!
[The soldiers dash off after the colonel. TRIP is still behind. He looks down at the body. There is a shot of the body, and we can see TRIP moves him slightly. We see TRIP again, staring at the body. He appears to have a wistful expression on his face.]
my favorite glory scene ever, “Crisis of Conscience”. It was, unfortunately, removed in post preduction.
(Sorry if the subtitles look a bit off, I had to write them in myself)
Now, I’m about to give you a History lesson on Glory.
When I first started to get obsessed with Glory, I soon quickly learned that Cabot Forbes was not a real person, but in fact a character made up by the movie’s creators. Much to my disappointment- or so I thought.
Due to Memorial Day, I decided to research a little further, and much to my surprise, Cabot Forbes does actually exist.
Edward Needles Hallowell, is his real name. The writers of Glory based Cabot Forbes on Edward Needles Hallowell, just changed his name. The name Cabot Forbes came from a mix of Robert’s childhood friend’s names.
Although Cabot was based on Edward there are some major key differences between Edward Needles Hallowell and Cabot Forbes.
In truth, Edward and Robert were not childhood friends. They didn’t know each other very well, although their families knew each other and were both well known abolitionists. Edward lived in Philadelphia with his abolitionist family most of his life. Not in Boston where Robert grew up.
Edward was Robert’s second in command of the 54th Massachusetts, but he accepted the position that was proposed to him by Governor Andrews, for he was living in Boston at the time covering from Antietam. Edward was not chosen specifically by Robert for the position, as the movie suggests.
Although, it is true that both Robert and Cabot/Edward fought in the battle of Antietam. But, they were not both part of the 2nd Massachusetts. Only Robert was in the 2nd Massachusetts, Edward was part of the 20th Massachusetts. Robert was as Captain, and Edward was a Lieutenant.
Edward was only a year older than Robert. So if Robert was 25 when he passed away, Edward at the time was 26.
THIS PART MAY SHOCK YOU!
You know the scene where they bury Robert? Well, I’ve always been quite disappointed that they never let the viewers know if Cabot survived or not. So, I decided since Edward Needles Hallowell is based upon Cabot Forbes, if I read up on if Edward survived or not, I would finally find out the truth.
And this is the part where Research decided to kill me. I soon found out that after Robert was shot THREE times leading he attack on Fort Wagner and died; THIS ACTUALLY HAPPENED! Edward/Cabot led the 54th Massachusetts into Fort Wagner after Robert fell.
Edward/Cabot was shot ALSO THREE TIMES, but soon after loosing too many men, they retreated. This part was quite shocking to me, considering the fact I never knew if he survived or not.
I just assumed he died. But I found out one of the soldiers dragged Edward with three gun shot sounds out of Fort Wagner when they retreated.
WHICH MEANS THAT CABOT ACTUALLY FUCKING SURVIVED THE ATTACK ON FORT WAGNER!
Edward survived the attack on Fort Wagner and witnessed many other battles until his discharge from the army at the end of the civil war in 1865.
The bullet wounds that Edward nearly died from definitely cut his life shorter then normal and he passed away in 1871 at only age 34.
IF THIS DOESN’T FUCK UP YOUR MIND GLORY LOVERS I DON’T KNOW WHAT ELSE WILL!
//Oh god… this means… CABOT HAD TO LIVE WITHOUT ROBERT!\
WELL HOW ABOUT YOU JUST CHOKE ME WITH A BAYONET WHY DONT YOU
yknow i always assumed from the scene at the very end of the fort wager attack that cabot died alongside the other men from the canon shot that the confederates fired, but this is WORSE!!
knowing from the “crisis of conscience” deleted scene and the screenplay that cabot was in fact scared to fight at fort wagner (and now im gonna be a nerd and just:
“i know about the cause, robert… i just dont know why we have to dress up this way and… put on these uniforms and kill each other over it” - forbes, crisis of conscience deleted scene
HE DIDNT WANT TO DIE IM SICK
so if we take cabot forbes as a fictional version of edward hallowell, then yeah, cabot was afraid to die, and he DIDNT, BUT HIS BEST FRIEND DID. RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM.
BUT if we take cabot forbes as a completely separate fictional character (which is what ive been doing really), then CABOT DIDNT WANT TO DIE, BUT HE DID. RIGHT AFTER HE WATCHED HIS BEST FRIEND DIE.
either way its a shitty ending for cabot and now im gonna cry myself to sleep
I've been scrolling through tiktok and a miracle really came true because there's a small community of people who make little edits about this movie....i was fr so shocked
Look on tiktok guys, maybe you'll find something there...muajasjas
