btw: shocking to the average tumblr user, i know, but i don't actually necessarily agree 100% with the people i reblog. even on the topic i reblog from them on. there are fine little nuanced details that people can disagree on and still be allies. and if conversation is in good faith and not hostile, that nuance can be discussed respectfully.

this stuff is so emblematic of what transfeminism on this website is. all you have to do is say something that sounds pithy and feels good on the tongue but is so reductive it's basically useless, straight up isn't true a lot of the time, and does literally nothing for the material needs of trans women
you arent doing anything to help people by saying "well trans women are actually in Nebulous Mutable Category B instead of Nebulous Mutable Category A". and many trans women are in category A still. quit jerking off on the subway and actually do something. you want trans women to be female so bad? pay for her fucking hormones. call the representatives in her governmental district and tell them not to ban her HRT. take her shopping for girl clothes or something. don't just fucking post some shit about how divinely feminine and womanly she is while doing nothing to help her with the body she fucking hates and then high five yourself about how much you love trans women while she drowns in her own misery
it's so funny to me when i see pearl-clutching articles about how "teenagers are diagnosing themselves with mental disorders via tiktok" because like. this is not happening in a vacuum. teenagers are severely and i mean severely medically neglected. i cannot stress this enough. teenagers do not have free access to medical care. those same news outlets would be clowning on women with housewife psychosis in the 1950's.
i sometimes go pale when listening to some of what my friends have gone through in their childhoods and teenagehoods. they talk about it so nonchalantly, things that would be considered straight up torture if done to an adult, can't fathom the effect this has on children. they are on multiple anti-psychotics and several antidepressants and anxiety meds now that they are adults. medical neglect has legally and effectively disabled them. a timely diagnosis and intervention could have saved them.
of course teenagers are self-diagnosing using tiktok. if your knee-jerk reaction is to scoff at the idea and dismiss it as dumb teenager shit instead of being radicalized because the best shot young people have at attaining the mental health support they need is a fucking dancing videos app, you're categorically a political enemy of the youth.
I want this post to get as big as my hopepunk post because this needs to be internalized by you people.
When it comes to conversations on environmentalism and taking care of our planet, we are doing a disservice to progress by asserting black and white statements that humans are “inherently evil” and “all we do is take and destroy, we are so selfish,” when the reason the Paris Agreement exists is because we saw what was happening to the planet and we wanted to try and fix it. We saw what was happening with acid rain and the ozone layer, so we came together and mended our mistakes.
Immediately making conclusions that humans are a plague on the earth itself is taking accountability away from greedy corporations that are actually doing the most harm to the earth. Yes a lot of humans are very evil, and some of those humans are unfortunately running the government, but to say they represent the larger species of the human race is reinforcing the idea that 1: You people just want to place blame on a collective group of people like you always do, and 2: You sound complicit as hell in the face of evil, assuming that’s just how humans are and there’s nothing we can truly do.
That’s some fucking bullshit if I’ve ever heard it.
repeat after me. humans are not inherently evil humans are not like a virus on this earth humans do not “deserve” to go extinct or anything like that. we are living breathing animals that deserve space just like every other creature on this planet. there’s just a tiny amount of us that have a fuck ton of money and power and they really suck

so exhausted by how fundamentally anti-human the capitalist world has become. like ageing, getting fat, being slightly inefficient, and making mediocre art are all extremely normal and extremely human activities, why is every corporation trying to convince us to spend all our money fighting that
actually once you do vote by mail once, it feels STUPID that in-person voting is even a thing. getting to sit with your ballot in your house, easily see your options, have time to do research and consider your choice, talk with friends and neighbors about their vote. it's especially so for small local elections and primaries where you might not have heard about different candidates and really have to ask around, attend local events, or dig into local news stories to find out who they are and what they stand for. but, of course, not allowing voters to easily research and carefully consider their votes is why there is opposition to vote by mail in the first place.
also, i know this might sound corny but like.... please be nice to other people online. not even trying to say this in a like a, 'oh because you never know what they might be going throughhhh' kind of way just like. be nice man. stop hate following along with things. be more patient with strangers. stop trying to get off cunty one liners for your five seconds of smirking like a dreamworks poster protag.
ive said it before but as a tool and a 'place', i really love the internet, genuinely. i dont like the resignation that it has to be, and stay, a place thats full of misery and fighting. ive met a lot of really wonderful people here, and i think we could all have a nice time together if everyone did their part to make it so that was possible. im not speaking down to you as someone whos never made these mistakes, im asking as someone whos also made them alongside you.

"The Tom-Boy Who Was Changed Into A Real Boy," a children's poem written between 1859 and 1862 and published by McLoughlin Brothers Publishing in New York.
The poem is part of the "Aunt Oddamadood series," which appeared to primarily create entertaining yet moralistic poems for children, in which a naughty child (other examples include "Little Miss Consequence," "The Conceited Boy," "The Mischievous Fingers") is presented and shown the error of their ways, to teach children what will happen if they do not behave. With that context, the purpose of this poem appears to warning children raised as girls that, should they act like a tomboy, they will eventually be quietly sent off to sea. It is made clear both at the beginning and the end of the poem that the child's tomboyish nature is a "fault" and something the audience must be "cautioned" about.
I learned about this poem from this small collection of transgender antebellum (pre-Civil War) USAmerican children's literature, collected by historian Jen Manion. Another relevant example from that collection is "Lucy Nelson; or, the Boy-Girl," the story of a child assigned female who dislikes femininity and prefers playing with her brothers and acting like a boy. Lucy and their brothers get in trouble, but Lucy is singled out for punishment. They are forced to wear boys clothes for a month; this doesn't initially seem that bad, but it becomes clear that the real punishment is subjecting Lucy to gendered humiliation. Lucy's brother laugh at them, declare that if they dress as a boy then they will "be treated as one," leading to them being physically and verbally cruel to them. At a dinner party, the stress of the gendered humiliation they are facing for their transmasculinity reaches a breaking point. A guest's fixation and confusion on their gender leads them to shout, in tears, "I am not a boy!" to end the inquisition.
Lucy's story ends not with them simply realizing they are a girl; it is explicitly detailed that it is very difficult for them to resist their "boyish" nature and they were "in danger of lapsing," but that eventually they became an "obedient little girl," having been successfully humiliated back into appropriate (and, notably, white) daughterhood. These examples show clearly how the narrative around the "acceptance" of tomboys hides the very real disdain and cruelty directed at transmasculinized youth that has existed in Western culture for centuries. Rather than their masculinity being praised, or the masculinization of a young girl being seen as positive, these tomboys are depicted as out-of-control, insufficiently white, and further masculinization is depicted as a punishment done to tomboys, something meant to be humiliating and scary, thus coercing them back to the role of daughterwifemother.
Also wanna add that this is a good example of malgendering in history, and why that term is so important when talking about anti-transmasculinity.
For both Lucy and the tomboy-turned-sailor, further masculinization is a punishment. The story of Lucy literally uses the phrase "if she dresses like a boy, we'll treat her like a boy" as a justification for verbal and physical harassment and humiliation.
& while the poem is lighthearted and meant to be fun, it is very clear that becoming a sailor is not something the tomboy is doing for fun or of his own volition. The poem explicitly describes the transition as happening "quite quietly" and "without noise," and being orchestrated by an unclear "them" which we can assume is likely the tomboy's family. Being a sailor was a job which involved hard manual labor, dangerous circumstances, and associated with lower-class (thus sexually dangerous) men. Again, this poem is from a series of moralistic poems which very clearly lay out for children what happens when you act "bad." The message here is: if you, little girl, try to act like a boy, you will become coarse and unloveable and be sent away to sea to live amongst dirty, dangerous cis men.
This is why malgendering is such an important term and concept, for all trans people, but here particularly with anti-transmasculinity. And I also hope that y'all keep these examples in your back pocket to use the next time you hear someone run their mouth about how the patriarchy just isn't that concerned about policing masculinity in people perceived as girls, because ummmm patriarchy LIKE boy stuff duh!!!!!!!!
This is really interesting to me because its so seldom that something lines up so well with my particular experience of having grown up intersex and as a transmasculine person. An experience that has led me to believe that the reason the policing of transmasculinity in kids is seen as "invisible" or even non-existent is because it often functions not on a level of open hostility, but on a subtle level of coy, "concerned for your future" social isolation, ostracism, and humiliation that feels orchestrated like a dance throughout your childhood and impossible to explain to anyone not on the transmasc or butch spectrum. I started getting "helpful" comments, snide remarks, and even doctors office visits about "fixing" how masculine my body and presentation were literally even before I realized I was trans or started to consciously play with my gender presentation.
Little girls and kids who were AFAB are only "allowed" to be tomboys insofar as their eventual assimilation into gender conforming feminine womanhood can be assured. If that assimilation is at all in question, the gloves come off really quick and they start considering forcing you onto supplemental estrogen.

this is what makes anti-transmasculinity so fucking infuriating to talk about. because people say shit like "well little girls are rewarded for acting masculine!" with no sense of irony.
but really so much anti-transmasculinity swirls around this notion that being made a boy is a punishment for people intended to be girls. on two levels:
because being a girl, and succeeding in the role of daughterwifemother, is your personhood. that is why the above poem is titled "the tomboy who was turned into a real boy," while depicting the tomboy dressed as a sailor with his head in his hands as if he is crying. it is not a whimsical adventure, it is meant to be read as obviously negative as a poem about a child who steals or is rude and gets punished for it.
the ever-present specter of cis male violence (physical and sexual) is not any less present for transmasculine people, and those who wield anti-transmasculinity (especially against children) know this. its implicit in the poem, its explicit in the story of Lucy, its the background radiation of every 19th century story of a FTM crossdresser which obsesses over whether or not they kept their virginity while living around cis men.
i never ever ever ever ever want to hear anyone claim that "masculine girls" are less hated than "feminine boys"* again. everyone get radicalized and educated on anti-transmasculinity RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
*ironically, the collection i got this from also includes a letter written by a person talking about why feminine boys are actually good (as long as they aren't too girly) because they are polite and helpful and studious, while masculine girls are problematic because they are rude and dirty. this was not a pro-transfem statement by any means, but its literally the exact opposite of what people like to claim about how this works. gosh, its almost like maybe we should stop trying to figure out which binary gender is more policed, because its an exercise in futility that only encourages us vs them binary thinking!
A lot of people seem to mix up ‘community’ with ‘friend group’ so when they read ‘no one should be abandoned by the community. No matter what they did’ they think it means ‘you have to be friends with abusers’. When in reality it means ‘no matter what someone does they shouldnt be left to go homeless and be denied financial, housing, medical, etc aid’
You don’t have to be friends with these people, no one is saying that. It’s just saying that you should support rehabilitative justice, support programs that help homeless people, support funding for free medical services, and make sure they don’t turn away anyone who needs help.

no one with any amount of power brave or enlightened enough to call what the western world is doing to children segregation. children are segregated from public life. children are a legitimate oppressed class
what else do you call it when third spaces place curfews for when children are allowed in, when public squares hire cops and guards to boot out any kids they find for "loitering"; when arcades and theatres and entertainment spaces mandate ID checks regardless of if their content is age-inappropriate or not; when parks for kids are constantly sold off for more property development, when public transport is gutted and tickets are converted to card-only systems, when micromobility devices are progressively outlawed under the moral panic pretense of "youth hooliganism", when cash is phased out of retail such that children have no legal means of purchasing anything independently? what else do you call it when children are completely barred from sharing space with adults on the internet? if we earnestly believe that children are an oppressed class who require liberation then we must analyse these things using the same language that we analyse all other class dynamics
at some point in your life you are going to do or say something racist, sexist, or otherwise bigoted. Your goal is not perfection, your goal is to be the kind of person that the people you've hurt feel safe being honest with when that happens.
