Theory: The crosses and their meaning in the Lands of the Old Faith
This theory is based on some words left in an AMA of Cult of the Lamb. Which make it more or less clear that the rules of the world are rules left by the First Gods, or perhaps the consequence of their even existing. And those who try to break free from this established hierarchy and order seem to be punished by some force, and only those who manage to break this force are able to change their destiny. Although these changes are clearly not natural, and since everything is part of an ecosystem, they will be felt.
As we know, the gods we know, who are the bishops, seem to have crosses nailed to their bodies. Why is this? Then after reading that, I came up with the theory that perhaps these were divine punishments for several of his actions that went against the natural order. Since Narinder suffered the most, perhaps Shamura's words and concerns about what Narinder was doing, so much so that they locked him up, were out of fear of what might happen to them and their siblings. Perhaps this force is an action that works through an "inevitable event," as in the case of Narinder, being confined in The Gateway.
Perhaps those crosses they bear were warnings for murder, for going against the principles of their crowns, and even for reshaping the lands to their own desires.
Another point that could lend credence to the theory is that, unlike them, the Chosen Gods we know so far, none of them seem to have or demonstrate having had crosses on their bodies.
Another proof that crosses can be a divine punishment is the death of this other God. We can observe how this God died being impaled on various crosses. We don't know what they did to be crucified, but perhaps it must have been something against the principles of the land, and more serious than what Narinder and Chemach did to deserve death.
Likewise, it seems that the Gods are not the only ones who can be affected by crosses; we see some Bosses who also appear to have been pierced by crosses.
As for Lamb, who literally wiped out the last gods of the pantheon, and who also commits certain questionable acts, they has not received any "punishment," so to speak. Perhaps the Lamb is that force capable of breaking the order.
I'm really curious to know if this is something that might be explored in more depth or just an interesting fact. I'd like to know what you think about this.
Well, after thinking about it, after having enough lore about the Chosen Gods and the role they fulfilled, left by the First Gods. Bishops' Crowns seem to have a certain contrast to the rest of the Crowns we know, and I wanted to review a little of that. And it occurred to me, what if the concepts with which the Bishops present themselves to us are not the original concept for which their Crowns were made?
Bishops' Crowns
The Green Crown
We know very well that this Crown is known as the Crown of Chaos, but we also know that it is capable of generating Safety through Order. What if this crown was originally made to be the Crown of Order/Safety?
It would also encompass Chaos as an essential part of its concept. Order cannot exist without chaos, and vice versa; release and calm are needed to cope with various emotions and then calm them down.
The Yellow Crown
The Crown of Famine, we know that Heket used it to generate hunger and make people join her cult by promising Abundance. And this is where I want to delve into its original concept, Abundance, if its original purpose was to be The Crown of Abundance?
Obviously, hunger is necessary in the land; it gives a purpose to wanting to eat, and with abundance you fulfill this purpose in a cycle of harvest and food.
The Blue Crown
Kallamar subjected Anchordeep to high fevers, and offering Health only to those who were his followers. His Crown of Pestilence, that was his, But, on second thought, we can say that that Crown was once the Crown of Health
Its purpose could have been natural regulation, since diseases are the regulators of species to prevent overpopulation. And likewise, through health, prolong the life of species and cure them of diseases to prevent their extinction.
The Purple Crown
Shamura, the Bishop with the Crown of War and Knowledge, may be the first of their siblings to use their concept on himself, but for other purposes.
Perhaps the crown was merely the Crown of Knowledge, intended to bestow Wisdom and Knowledge upon those who desired it. But in Shamura's hands, this Knowledge was used for War and Conquest. Demonstrating why the Crowns should be chosen wisely, and Chemach should hand them over under certain requirements.
The Red Crown
This is the most well-known Crown, the Crown of Death. Its concept appears to remain the original and the only one that hasn't changed, because Narinder's siblings saw it as an abomination.
This Crown encompasses the concept of Death, although it also seems to be able to grant certain abilities regarding Life. Although what appears to be its purpose in the right hands is to bring peace to the Dead, return to Life the souls that remain in Limbo in agony, and have control over the cycle of life.
Other Crowns
I wanted to take this opportunity to comment on the concepts that the rest of the Divine Crowns had.
The Orange Crown
The Crown of Haro, thanks to the Offering to the Owl, tells us that he was formerly known as the Great Hunter. And he was a God of Hunt, and his crown was probably the Crown of Hunt.
Through it, he could offer a good Hunt to his followers as long as they respected the females and their young, and did not overhunt. Their purpose was to have order in the hunt and for the species to respect each other, giving to nature in return for those who hunt.
The Cyan Crown
A new crown we discovered, but whose purpose we already suspected. The Crown of Winter, belonging to the Winter Goddess Yngya.
Its role in nature was key; this crown allowed plants to rest, reduced pests, and allowed nature to begin again. When Yngya disappeared, winter also vanished. Perhaps this also explains the unusual vegetation in the lands. The flora must have evolved to adapt to the lack of this season, perhaps undergoing abrupt changes.
The Amber Crown (Provincial name)
It's the Crown we know the least about, and perhaps the one about which we could speculate the most. The only thing we know about its concept is the reason why they were looking for The Fanatic, the Protection.
Little could be said about that, since it tells us nothing more about the Crown, although there is also the possibility that its Crown is the Crown of Fanaticism. But there are not enough arguments for that. (And no, it's not the Crown of Death; similar concepts may exist, yes, but the Crown of Death already exists and it's the Red Crown.)
I wanted to talk about this for some people who confuse bishops with other gods.
The First Gods
They are the Gods who created the Lands of the Old Faith. Their divinity seems to be innate; they are a complete mystery, but they seem to be able to create life and shape its nature. The Last of the First Gods was the one who created the 3 Feathered Beasts. Likewise, the corpse of another of these First Gods is found in Spore Grotto, and due to its properties, the Mushrooms were born from there.
Gods of Gold
They are a race of gods who appear to have angelic appearances, one of their members being the Chosen Child. They appear to be gods with many offspring, as one of these descendants was the original wielder of the Legendary Sword. They seem to be born divine, and with a superior mindset. Their origin and where they come from are unknown, only that they seem to reside in a more "elevated" place.
The Chosen Gods
These types of Gods are those that were chosen by the hand of Chemach, according to the criteria left by the First Gods. The nature of these Gods is, in a way, artificial, achieved solely through the possession of a divine artifact, the Crowns. The known nature of these Gods (with the exception of The Fanatic, being the only one who breaks this rule, they did protect their followers, but their actions towards those who went against the First Gods were extremist.) was kind, and they prioritized their concepts and followers above all else. The only confirmed Gods in this category are: The Fanatic, Haro, and Yngya
The Gods Without Divine Right
These Gods emerged after Chemach descended into madness. The crowns were lost, and whoever found them could become a god. These Gods are also artificial in nature because they need The Crowns. Their ways were more bloody and ruthless, capable of breaking the natural cycle in exchange for power, and of sacrificing followers or innocents without hesitation. They were responsible for destroying the Chosen Gods, and also for leaving so many corpses and ruins across the land.
The Bishops of the Old Faith
They are a small category of these gods, a group of gods who shared the same doctrine, although each had an independent cult; they were the last gods to rule. Until one of them betrayed the rest, who was locked up and seeking freedom again, he would send several vessels to finish off the rest, with The Lamb being the only one that succeeded. Although he was also betrayed by his vessel, and thus lost his Divinity. Thus, The Lamb would become the new God of Death. (And likewise, they is also considered a non-Chosen God)
I hope this explains a little about the differences between Gods and Bishops. Bishops are all Gods, but not all Gods are Bishops. Likewise, Marchosias is not a Bishop, nor a God; he is a scientist who hates Gods.
*claps all my hands together* there is no version of giving a non-avatar tma character cool avatar powers that is not inherently tragic, bcos canonically all the ‘cool powers’ of avatardom come at terrible personal cost, whether that is personal trauma or the knowledge that you must inflict trauma on other people to survive or both. the best fics/art abt this address the pain & internal conflict of gaining powers; the worst ignore it; and the very worst ignore that some avatar groups, like the lightless flame, require members to be gleefully sadistic in order to join willingly (with agnes, made as an avatar, the sole exception, and with VERY specific circumstances). thus ‘cool fire powers’ is not only a shitty reason to make tim a lightless flame-style avatar specifically, but ‘i want them to have cool powers’ is such a surface level-reason for making any non-avatar character an avatar, and ignores the tragedy inherent to tma and particularly to jon,

and as op i would like to say that that is one thousand percent not the point of this post.
imo tim stoker as presented by canon would not willingly choose to be the avatar of any fear entity at all, and if he did become one it would be against his will and/or against his knowledge
i’m inclined to think that end, web, and eye (MAYBE hunt) would be best positioned to lie to him and trap him in avatarhood without his prior knowledge, but that’s a personal opinion
the only way i can see tim becoming an avatar of the stranger is if he was first made a victim of a stranger and then taken against his will to avatarhood, and he would. hate it. that would be torture for tim. that is not the natural conclusion of his characterization or of canon (lbr canon says he’s forcibly eye aligned and then dies), and please do not use my post to say it is.
Did Jon willingly become an Eye avatar? Did Oliver willingly become an End avatar? Being an avatar isn’t always about what you want, and I would argue it almost never is honestly. Tim has already been made a victim of the Stranger because of his brother, and since then he’s used putting on metaphorical masks and hiding his true feelings and intentions from others as his primary coping mechanism. The Entities and the people who serve them are metaphors for trauma, and you’re contradicting yourself by saying Tim would never be Stranger aligned just because he would hate it.
sure. i’m real tired, so can i direct you over here, where i already talked about the whole ‘willingness’ thing playing a part and about the metaphors for trauma and all that shit. i disagree that tim’s primary way of coping with trauma (including but not limited to: his brother; sasha; the worms; how jon treated him; how elias treated him; his time in michael’s hallwayss) was by putting on metaphorical masks, or that that was a defining character trait and not the hundreds of other things about him, but that’s a whole different kettle of fucking fish.

i was trying to say that insisting that stranger tim is the only thing in line with his characterization and storyline is incorrect and ignoring a whole bunch of other things about him, and using my fucking post to do it is shitty, and please don’t take my original message about putting careful thought into any au to push your personal agenda of stranger tim over all else.
the original post was about how any iteration of anyone as an avatar is tragic, and if you like to play in the tim-as-stranger-avatar-as-tragedy then that’s fucking fine go for it, i’ve occasionally seen it done well, but you don’t get to come along and say that anyone who doesn’t like to play in that space is wrong and ignoring his whole character arc. his canonical character arc is forcibly eye-aligned, and tragic, and then dead. other aus are all potentially valid if they address the tragedy of it. and yeah, i’m gonna say that actually, forcibly desolation-aligned is just as valid a fic premise as forcibly stranger-aligned or hunt-aligned or whatever fucking ELSE, if done with careful thought to what confluence of events would bring him to that and the impact it would have on him and not just for ‘ooh cool fire powers’.
My original tag was in response to people saying Tim is Desolation aligned, which we both disagree on, just for the record. And I also agree with you that being an avatar is about more than just getting cool powers. I never said it wasn’t. Look, you’re the one who @-ed me, dude. What I say in the tags of a post reblogged to my own personal blog is an expression of my own personal opinion, to my followers, and is not a directed response that I expected anyone to respond to. If you didn’t want to have a discussion because you’re /tired/, then you should have just let me be wrong and went on with your life.
ok. yesterday i had more energy and was invested in not having my meaning misconstrued, because i hate to be misunderstood. i did not want to be sending or endorsing a message i did not intend, to send or endorse, and i wanted to be very fucking clear on that. i @’d you not as a call out or whatever, but so you could see my explanation of my point and get some context for what i was originally trying to say.
when i put things in tags, i intend and expect that the op will see it, especially on a post with not many notes like this one, because i have tag viewer on and i look at the tags of every post of mine that gets reblogged; seeing people’s tags on my posts is a very important part of how i use tumblr. i frequently reblog and reply to tags, and my tags are frequently reblogged and replied to. i’m sorry that isn’t your tumblr experience, but it’s mine, and i’m not actually going to apologize for that. if you put a reaction on someone’s post, they’re likely going to see it, even if it’s on your personal blog, it was my post. i can SEE reblogs of it, just like i can see @’s of myself, or replies, and that makes any direct response on my post something on my activity page and in my space.
i am sorry i misunderstood that you were directly talking about stranger tim over desolation tim. i still think that desolation tim can be done in a thoughtful way with consideration of the tragedy involved, even if it is not my cup of tea. i still also think that ‘tim would be a stranger avatar you guys are just ignoring his entire character’ sounds like a full goddamn blanket statement, and i don’t think that my reaction of ‘please don’t use my post to push your reading of this character over all other readings’ was that fucking strange a reaction to a statement like that.
i wanted to make sure people were actually getting my intended point in a post that i put a lot of my personal thoughts and feelings into. i don’t think you did. i’m glad your intended reaction was not quite on the level i thought it was, but i wanted to, again, make sure i explained things very fucking clearly because that is important to me.

I was being hyperbolic in my original tag omg. One all-caps sentence referencing a popular meme was not intended to be a full breakdown of Tim’s entire character, and I’m confused as to why you thought it was.
